LACROSSE FOR GIRLS AND BOYS AGES FIVE TO FIFTEEN AT THE PARADE GROUNDS

Lacrosse Clinic
Saturday, August 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th,
from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Girls and boys ages five to fifteen of all skill levels are invited to participate in Brooklyn Battery Lacrosse Club's (BBLC) free clinics on four Saturdays in August, followed by the youth teams' fall and spring seasons. The clinics will be held at the Parade Grounds on Field 4. Sticks will be provided for participants to use.

BBLC founder Don Nocella is determined to help lacrosse overcome the long-time stigma of being associated solely with the upper class of society. The barrier of cost will be dealt with through such methods as equipment grants and financial assistance.

Online registration for the fall 2012 season is open. The cost is $175, but registering your child in July lowers it to $150 and gives your child a free one-year US Lacrosse membership.

For more information, see www.brooklynlacrosse.org, fill out an online contact form, or call (917) 715-2524.

GOLDEN FARM PROTEST TOMORROW EVENING

From Occupy Kensington:
Tuesday July 24 is a national day of action for worker's rights and a decent minimum wage. In New York there will be a demonstration in Union Square starting at 4pm.

At the end of the demonstration some of the protesters will travel by bus to locations across the city where workers are engaged in struggles for decent wages.

Golden Farm will be one of the locations. The workers there voted to join a union back in March but their votes have still not been certified because the owner, Sonny Kim, has used every legal delaying tactic known to man. Every allegation he has made has been found baseless by the judges but each time he appeals and stretches the case out longer.

Likewise his lawyers reached a tentative agreement with the workers suing for back wages two months ago but no paperwork has been done. While Sonny draws out the process one worker has died of cancer leaving his family penniless and others face substantial hardships.

Join us at Golden Farm at 7pm Tuesday to protest for a decent minimum wage, paid sick days, and union recognition for the Golden Farm workers.

UNDERGROUND MUSES OF GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY: A WALKING TOUR

Underground Muses of Green-Wood:
A Walking Tour in Green-wood Cemetery
Sunday, August 19th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Visit the graves of these Americans in the arts with Green-Wood Cemetery tour guide and urban historian Ruth Edebohls:
  • Leonard Bernstein: composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist;
  • Fred Ebb: musical theater lyricist;
  • Louis Comfort Tiffany: artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass. He is the American artist most associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements;
  • Asher B. Durand: American painter of the Hudson River School;
  • George Caitlin (also spelled Catlin): painter, author, and traveler who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West;
  • George Bellows: realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City;
  • William Merritt Chase: painter known as an exponent of Impressionism and as a teacher. He is also responsible for establishing the Chase School, which later would become Parsons The New School for Design; and
  • John La Farge: painter, muralist, stained glass window maker, decorator, and writer.
                                                           The descriptions above are from Wikipedia.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. The walk may be partly uphill (and, therefore, strenuous) because Green-wood Cemetery was built on land that was formed 17,000 years ago when the last glacier to cover North America melted. In fact, the highest point in Brooklyn is in Green-wood Cemetery: Battle Hill, at 220 feet, by 7th Avenue and 20th Street.

Cost: Members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund pay $10. Non-members pay $15. Making reservations is recommended. To buy tickets, call (718) 210-3080 or order online.

ANOTHER CLOSING ON CHURCH AVE.

Another business on the block of Church Avenue that's between E. 4th and E. 5th streets in Kensington has closed. A sign in the window of Alzahraa, a Middle Eastern grocery store that opened last year, says "Business for Sale." Alzahraa had been next door to Plaza 5 de Mayo, which also closed this month, after being open for eight years. The third closed business on that block is Connie's Cafe. It opened in July 2009 and closed in April 2012.

FELIX TRINIDAD DIES

A fighter in the drive for fair treatment for workers and fair compensation for their labor has passed away. Felix Trinidad Tzatzapotla, a stock worker at Golden Farm for about ten yearsdied of cancer on Thursday, July 12th. He was only thirty-four years old. He continued to work, despite his illness, until May 2nd--the day that Golden Farm employees voted for a union. The next day, he entered a hospital.

To assist his wife, Anastacia Gonzalez Ramos, and their children with expenses, New York Communities for Change has created a fund raising page, "In Memory of Felix Trinidad Tzatzapotla."

Rest in peace.

GREEN BEANS NOT WALGREENS! GREEN BEANS NOT WALGREENS!

"What do we want?" "Green beans, not Walgreens!"

Former customers of Windsor Terrace's now-closed Key Food--as well as other residents who are sympathetic to their situation--continue to stand together in opposition to Walgreens leasing the Key Food space and its refusal to listen to the community's suggestions about how to make enough fresh food available for the neighborhood.

More than 2,000 people, representing more than 16% of the neighborhood, have agreed to boycott Walgreens and have signed pledges committing themselves to it.

Neighborhood residents have now dubbed their group Green Beans Not Walgreens and started a website of the same name (www.greenbeansnotwalgreens.org). The site will be the central gathering place for information and action. The name was adapted from a chant at a previous rally opposed to Walgreens moving into a supermarket's space.

GOLDEN FARM EMPLOYEE PASSES AWAY

Sent to us by Eleanor, an active supporter of Golden Farm employees:
Dear Neighbors,

Felix, one of the long standing Golden Farm workers who played a leading role in the organizing drive there, died of cancer last Thursday.

Felix was the major earner for his family. He went on working long after he became ill because he needed the money and left the search for medical care too late because he had no health coverage.

His family in Mexico have had to turn to the Mexican consulate in New York to get his body flown home as they do not have the money to pay for it themselves.

Mr. Kim's lawyers have reached a tentative agreement with the Golden Farm workers for a settlement on the back wages that they all, including Felix, are owed. A figure has been agreed on, but paperwork has not been finalized. The workers asked Mr Kim if he would provide an advance on Felix's portion, but he has refused. He has however let them put a collection tin for Felix's family at the checkouts.

There is a service at the Ortiz Funeral Home on 52 St and 4th Ave, today (Tuesday) from 4-9.

Two of Felix's brothers also work at Golden Farm, and all of the stock workers were close friends with him. I know that they all would greatly appreciate any support or condolences from the community at this time.

Eleanor

Rest in peace, Felix. Our condolences to his family and friends.

TODAY'S AND TOMORROW'S WEATHER: DANGEROUS TO HEALTH

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for New York City from 1:00 p.m. today to 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. These conditions are dangerous to human and animal health. People who don't have air conditioning, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions are most at risk. Everyone should avoid strenuous activity. Go to a Cooling Center if you need to.

TAKING PROPER CARE OF BELOVED PETS ISN'T CHEAP--AN ADOPTIVE CAT MOM NEEDS HELP

Senor Paolo was living in a hoarder's home with dozens of other cats before Sean Casey Animal Rescue took him in and got him adopted.

It turned out that Paolo, whose medical care was neglected during his three years in the hoarder's home, has a serious and expensive problem: chronic ear infections that have led to the removal of his right ear canal. The left one may have to go too.

Paolo's adoptive mom needs help in paying the vet bills. Sean Casey Animal Rescue is trying to raise half of the $2,000 needed through ChipIn. They're almost halfway toward their goal. Please chip in as much as you feel comfortable donating. Thank you.

The longer version of Paolo's story is on the ChipIn website here.

FRIENDS OF KEY FOOD SPACE AND WINDSOR TERRACE ALLIANCE: IN SEARCH OF WALKERS AND TALKERS

June 28th Windsor Terrace Rally against Walgreens

Friends of Key Food Space and Windsor Terrace Alliance are in search of volunteers for every block in Windsor Terrace who will collect signatures on petitions, hand out fliers and signs, and communicate with their neighbors about the latest developments at the former Key Food site.

To help these grassroots groups of neighborhood residents protect access to fresh food in Windsor Terrace, become a "block captain" and distribute information to everyone living on one particular block in the community. You don't have to live on that block.

Time is of the essence. The groups are trying to reach 5,000 signatures in the next three weeks on their petition to boycott Walgreens because of its refusal to either provide the neighborhood with sufficient fresh food or allow a supermarket to be built in a portion of the parking lot.

To sign up as a block captain, send an e-mail to Laura Jacobs at henriettacat @ hotmail.com that includes your name, e-mail address, phone number, and the name of the street you live on and its cross-streets.
