CYNTHIA KING DANCE STUDIO IN THE NEW YORK TIMES

FIVE minutes before the afternoon’s first class, the waiting room, chilly from the outside air as the storefront’s glass door swung open and shut, hummed with activity and talk. Snow boots were exchanged for ballet slippers, sweaters for leotards, jeans for colored tights. Wayward strands of hair were tucked away.
"Eyes up, ears open, long neck," Cynthia King instructed, her own posture graceful and straight. At her signal, the boys and girls filed into their classes at the Cynthia King Dance Studio, where they are transformed from children into dancers.
"Plié Time for Tots in Tightsshines a spotlight on Windsor Terrace's Cynthia King Dance Studio in words and photos.
Ms. King said working with children, watching them progress and forming strong relationships with their families has been the most satisfying part of her career.
"Life can be chaotic for kids in the city,” Ms. King said. “It’s overcrowded; it’s fast. When you get to the dance class, when you get to the barre, it’s order, and everything else is gone."

REPORT SNOW-RELATED PROBLEMS TO BRAD LANDER

From City Councilmember Brad Lander:
Another day, another snowstorm (I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring).

It looks like the City has done a much better job of clearing the streets this morning than they did in December. But if your street remains uncleared, or if you notice any other snow-related issues (e.g. uncleared subway entrance), please let us know:
Some government offices are closed today, but we’ll be open all day.

Trains and buses are slowly returning to normal service, but you should definitely check with the MTA before heading to a bus stop or subway station. Updated information can be found at the MTA's website.

Thanks,
Brad

10:30 A.M. ROUND-UP OF WEATHER-RELATED SUSPENSIONS

10:30 a.m. round-up of weather-related suspensions:

All non-emergency City government offices are closed, including senior centers and libraries.

All public schools are closed.

DMV offices are open.

The post office is delivering mail, with delays.

NYC Transit and MTA Bus routes are being evaluated. They'll be returned to service when they're determined to be safely navigable.
  • As they're restored, Limited Stop buses will make local stops until further notice.
  • Service has been partially restored with weather-related delays on these buses: B1, B2, B3, B4, B6, B7, B8, B9, B20, B26, B31, B35, B36, B38, B41, B42, B44, B46, B49, B52, B54, B57, B61, B63, B64, B67, B68, B69, B70, B74, B82, BM1,  BM2, BM3, BM4, B100, and B103.
  • Service has been partially restored on these routes, with diversions: B11, B16, B43, X27, X28 (servicing Brooklyn only; not operating in or out of Manhattan).
  • All other bus service is still suspended.
All subway lines are operating, except for the Franklin Ave Shuttle. Expect delays in both directions on all lines.

ROUND-UP OF SERVICE SUSPENSIONS CAUSED BY ALL THAT WHITE STUFF

It's 3:30 a.m., and it's quite a mess out there.

Access-A-Ride paratransit service has been canceled for Thursday, except for medically necessary trips, such as dialysis, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy. For medically necessary trips, call Access-A-Ride Reservations at (877) 337-2017. Press 2 for Reservations.

MTA New York City Transit buses and MTA Bus have suspended service throughout the city. Some subway lines ended service earlier than scheduled.  Other lines are operating as local trains. NYC Transit has canceled all planned service changes through Thursday morning.

Since 12:25 a.m., there hasn't been any F train service between Church Avenue Station and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue in both directions. Snow and ice-fighting equipment are being used along all outdoor subway lines.

Alternate side of the street parking and parking meter regulations are suspended citywide until further notice. All other parking regulations are in effect. Garbage collection is also suspended.

Senior citizens should call ahead to the senior centers they attend before going outside because some of them will be closed.

While snow is falling, the city doesn't take complaints about snowy or icy sidewalks. After the snow stops, property owners have to clear a path for pedestrians and also remove snow from sidewalks next to bus stops and hydrants.
  • If the snow stops falling between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within four hours.
  • If the snow stops falling between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., property owners must clear sidewalks before 11:00 a.m.
If the sidewalks aren't cleared within those time frames, the city can issue property owners a summons.

That's all for now, folks. Good luck out there.

SINGING THE BLUES ON CONEY ISLAND AVENUE

The Robert Ross Band
Friday, January 28th, 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

66 PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING CANCELED

From the 66th Precinct's Deputy Inspector, John Sprague:
Due to the snow storm which is affecting our area the Community Council meeting scheduled for Thursday January 27th, 2011 will be cancelled. We hope to see everyone at our next meeting on February 17th, 2011 at 7:30pm.

REPORT SNOW COMPLAINTS TO THE PUBLIC ADVOCATE

From New York City's Public Advocate, Bill de Blasio:
How is your street looking? Remember: if you have an unplowed street, post it here or fill out a complaint on our website and we'll get it into the hands of the Sanitation Dept right away. Include cross streets and borough.

66TH PRECINCT'S WORDS OF WISDOM ON THE WEATHER EMERGENCY

From the 66th Precinct:
Please prepare for the snow that is expected to fall tonight. The current forecast calls for 4-8 inches of snow expected to fall overnight with wind gusts up to 30 MPH. We are here to help in any way.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrive to work, rushing in the snow can and will only cause an accident. Park your car legally, and, if possible, park on the left side of the street; Sanitation plows to the right.

If you decide to drive, make sure you have a full tank of gas and a shovel in your car. Any further help, please contact the 66th Precinct at 718-851-5611.

Mayor Bloomberg has issued a Weather Emergency for the city and is urging residents to avoid driving if possible. The Weather Emergency declaration also allows the city to tow any vehicle blocking roadways or impeding the ability to plow streets.

Alternate side of the street parking has been suspended citywide until further notice. Parking meters are also suspended throughout the city. Garbage collection will also be suspended.

Don’t miss our next Precinct Community Council Meeting
Thursday, January 27th, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
5910 13th Avenue, between 59th and 60th streets.
All residents of the community are invited to attend meetings.
For further details, call the precinct at (718) 851-5601.

66th Precinct

MORE SUSPENSIONS: GARBAGE COLLECTION AND PARKING METERS

At 12:15 p.m. today, Mayor Bloomberg issued a Weather Emergency Declaration for New York City. Avoid all unnecessary driving for the duration of the storm and use public transportation. For information on MTA service, visit http://www.mta.info.

Any vehicles found blocking roadways or impeding the ability to plow streets will be towed at the owner's expense.

Alternate side of the street parking, payment at parking meters, and garbage collection are suspended citywide until further notice.

FEES MAY DOUBLE FOR USING PUBLIC TENNIS COURTS

From a neighbor:
The parks department is planning on DOUBLING fees to use tennis courts and recreation centers this summer. That is an increase from $100 to $200.

All comments have been heard. BUT....no decision has been made. The NYC Parks Department Legal Affairs officer stated that at this point, the most effective method is to WRITE your opposition to the Parks Commissioner, who is a mayoral appointee and will be making a decision on this shortly.
In addition, the mayor DOES pay very close attention to 311 stats and was also advised that in addition to a letter to Adrian Benepe, a 311 complaint can't hurt. Please pass this along to all tennis players who may want to complain about this regressive tax and unfair increase.

The Hungry March Band, Brooklyn's own legendary street brass marching band, will get you sweating faster than the saunas, and DJ Joro-Boro, former resident DJ of the infamous Mehanata (Bulgarian Bar), keeps the dance floor sizzling with his hot EthnoMesh Megalophonia mix till 2am while we dole out pierogies for everyone.
