GEOLOGY AND SOILS OF NYC

"Geological discoveries in the fields of hard rock and glacial geology have been made during the past four decades of research, the result of continuous mapping and laboratory research on collected samples from New York City.
Indeed, access to surface and subsurface exposures has produced a treasure trove of geological information that alters our view of the Paleozoic tectonic development of this portion of the Appalachian mountain chain as well as the Pleistocene glacial history of New York City and vicinity. Holocene (post-glacial) alteration of the in-situ and transported glacial regolith has produced our modern soils.

Come see and hear the details of Dr. Merguerian's investigations and documentation of his new discoveries in the form of digital images, maps, and integrated video."

STUDENT HOUSING BUILDING FOR SALE

What's in store for 385 McDonald Avenue? Will the former assisted living facility* continue to serve as student housing? Will it become a hotel? Are there other potential uses for it? Someone with $8.3 million--TerraCRG Commercial Realty Group's asking price (the previous owner, White Acres Equities, purchased it in 2007 for $12 million.)--will determine the future of University Place.

Located between Church Avenue and Albemarle Road (across from Foodtown), University Place is a 51,000-square-foot, four-story property with 128 beds in 64 units. It has over 14,000 square feet of community space and 2,500 square feet of amenities. Almost fully occupied, it was recently renovated at a cost of $500,000.
The annual rent for a full- furnished suite, depending on its size (Petite, Deluxe, Grand), ranges from $1,175 to $1,350 a month. The property brings in an average income of $120,000 per month.

YEN YEN IS AMONG THE BEST CHINESE RESTAURANTS IN BROOKLYN

The Brooklyn Paper's article "The best places to chow down outside of Chinatown" has a "shortlist of Chinese chow worth checking out if you’re not willing to make the trek to Brooklyn’s ethnic enclaves." About Yen Yen Restaurant and Bar it says
This Chinese joint isn’t just known for its food — it’s campy, well-priced and tasty. We like this place because it serves old-school cocktails like a mai tai — complete with brightly colored paper tropical umbrellas perched in the glass; it makes us feel like we’re in the 1960s, and it’s Christmas eve.
Hunan and Szechuan cuisines are served.

GOLDEN FARM NEWS. DON'T BOYCOTT. DO PROTEST.

From neighbor Eleanor Rodgers:
Golden Farm on Church Avenue and E. 4th Street in Kensington paid its workers less than $4 an hour until March 2010 when the workers started to organize themselves. They and the owner Sonny Kim are now engaged in a battle over pay and conditions, and the workers are asking for community support.
Please join the protest outside the store on Saturday, February 11th, at 2:00 p.m.

Below is a report I wrote for the kwtneighbors listserve about a meeting on this issue held last week.
I went to the meeting with Golden Farm workers on Wednesday. There were about 15 people from the neighborhood and 6 Golden Farm workers, plus three people from NY Communities for Change and Councilman Brad Lander.

This is what the workers reported:
In 2008 the Department of Labor visited the store and took statements from the workers that they were not being paid minimum wage. This raised their hopes that something would be done to improve their wages, but for a year nothing happened. Then in 2009 the Dept of Labor fined Sonny Kim between three and four thousand dollars. A fine which he refused to pay, and he continued to pay less than minimum wage.

Typical pay and hours for a worker in Golden Farm at that point was to work six 12 hour days a week (for a total of 70 hours) for $250/week.

In early 2010 some of the workers met with NY Communities for Change, a group which had just launched a campaign in support of exploited immigrant shop workers in New York city.

The workers decided to start a lawsuit to get their wages raised to the minimum, and to try to join a union. They held a meeting of all the workers where the vast majority were in favor of joining a union.

Then in March Sonny Kim discovered about the plans to unionize. He had a staff meeting where he announced that he would raise their wages to the minimum of $7.25 immediately, provided they end the drive to unionize. If however they continued to try to unionize he said that he would continue to pay them less than $4 an hour and that he would call Immigration and get ICE to raid the store.

Here’s what one worker said about that threat: “We used to wear t-shirts that said Golden Farm on them but he has taken those away so that “When ICE comes I can say – “Him, I don’t know him. He’s just in my shop.””

After that meeting a lot of the workers were too scared to support any further action, and since then they have been paid minimum wage.

There are 24 workers in total and despite the intimidation 10 of them have kept their names on the lawsuit (which is now about back wages) and are continuing to try to improve their conditions in the store. (Two of those ten have left Golden Farm in the last few months because of pressure form management but are continuing to support the struggle of the others)

Here’s what one worker, Roberto, said:
“We’re not taking anything from him. We’re asking for what he takes from us. You all know me, I work in produce, the coldest part of the store. I’m there twelve hours a day. The cilantro comes in boxes of ice. I unpack it. I bring my own gloves – he doesn’t give us any. I work a lot of hours right above an open drain full of dirty water. Inspectors came to the store and said he must do something about it. But it is still there. Sometimes my head hurts because of the smell from the drain, but I must keep working there for hours. We work honestly but we are humiliated a lot. Mr Kim and the managers shout at us. When he is in a bad mood everybody suffers. He walks in the store and kicks things.

Three years ago I came to work on a Wednesday morning. I had been allowed to keep a radio at my workstation. He had said that I could. I came in and my radio was lying smashed on the floor. Mr Kim shouted at me and told me I was fired. When I ask him why he curses at me.”

Four or five of the workers got together and approached Mr Kim later in the day and persuaded him not to fire Roberto.

Leaving aside the issue of back wages, which will eventually be addressed by the courts, what I got from the workers at the meeting was that their workplace conditions were what they are primarily concerned about. Health and safety issues like the open drain or the amount of carrying of heavy boxes individuals have to do. Sick days, shorter shifts - Mr Kim had promised in March to give them 11 hour shifts but it has not happened. They want the right not to be fired on the spot for no apparent reason and to be treated with respect as people.

They hope to achieve at least some of these changes by getting Mr Kim to sit down with them and negotiate a contract. Not involving any union but just the workers in the store and Mr Kim.

When they asked us to sign a card calling on Mr Kim to give them a fair deal this is what they meant.

After the workers spoke, the meeting discussed next steps and what we as a community can do to help them. They are not asking anyone to boycott the store. It is far more important for people shopping in the store to let Mr Kim know that they support the workers. You can call and leave a message at (718) 871-1009.

We agreed to build for a larger protest outside the store on Saturday February 11 at 2pm. Please join the protest and encourage your neighbors to come too.

In order to build for the protest we are going to be going door to door in the neighborhood with flyers explaining the situation and letters of protest which people can sign. If you can help with that or any other sort of outreach please contact Alexandra Garcia from NY Communities for Change at(347) 927-7895.

That’s the end of the meeting report. I’d like to make a point of my own. While the lawsuit is ongoing the workers named in the suit are legally protected from being fired in retaliation. Once it’s over they will have no protection, unless Mr Kim has signed a contract which gives them protection. If we as a community can’t help them to achieve this in my opinion there is every reason to expect him to fire them and to follow that by dropping the wages for the remaining staff who are too frightened to fight him.

I can’t state strongly enough how much courage it has taken for those ten workers to stand up. At the end of the meeting I asked Roberto if it would be alright for me to quote him in this report. I intended not to use his name and was concerned about mentioning the radio as that‘s a very specific detail. Instead he told me to use his name, he said “I want my brothers to know that we can stand up. We have lived in the shadows too long.”

Hope to see you at the rally.

ONLINE PETITION TO GOLDEN FARM OWNER ABOUT HIS TREATMENT OF HIS EMPLOYEES

An online petition to the owner of Golden Farm about his treatment of his workers says

The Kensington and Brooklyn community support workers from Golden Farm supermarket!

Since it's opening in the late nineties the store hadn't paid minimum wage or overtime, that situation changed when workers filed a lawsuit on March 2011 to demand backwages and basic benefits like sick days, paid vacation and a contract that guarantees job security. The owner Mr. Sonny Kim refuses to pay what he owes and to sign a contract that will give all workers basic benefits and continued protection on the job.

Sonny Kim-- We are outraged by the fact that employees at your store have worked for many years earning well below the minimum wage.

Furthermore, we are alarmed that your employees have been harassed and threatened for standing up for their fair wages and demanding benefits on the job.

This is why we stand behind the workers and support their lawsuit for their backpay and campaign for a contract with benefits.

We believe that all workers deserve a living wage and fair contract. Our communities support small local businesses that respect workers rights, as loyal customers we demand that your business set an example for fair labor standards.
The only information you need to provide is your first and last name, e-mail address, and zip code.

WOMAN APPROACHED BY MAN AT FORT HAMILTON PARKWAY SUBWAY STATION

A woman in the neighborhood is sharing an experience she had in order to alert other women. We thank her.
I don't know if this is a one-off incident or something that may happen again but I thought it's better to let people know just in case. This past Thursday, I was getting out at the southern exit of the Fort Hamilton F/G train station around 7 pm when a creepy man approached me just outside the turnstile.
He said, "You look very familiar. Have we met before?" I took a quick look at him, registered no recognition and replied coldly, "No, I don't think so." He said sorry and I walked home as quickly as I could turning back once to make sure he wasn't following me. (I was relieved not to see him but still felt very threatened since the streets were empty.)
The encounter was really odd because I was bundled up, with the collar of my long winter coat over my mouth and nose. I had my head down as I was getting out of the turnstile and thought it bizarre that someone would be able to instantly think I look "very familiar."
The man was white, had light hair—either blond or silver—and thick-framed glasses. I'd say he could be in his late 40s or into his 50s. I didn't glean any more information beyond that, I'm afraid.
Again, I'm not sure if this is relevant but wondered if other women in the neighborhood had experienced something similar.

BRANCACCIO'S FOOD SHOP IS AN IMMEDIATE HIT

Brancaccio's Food Shop, a take-out prepared foods store, opened on Thursday and has been receiving glowing reviews from neighbors ever since. Chef Joe Brancaccio shops every morning for the ingredients he'll use in his cooking that day. What he buys depends on what's in season, the quality of the food, and what he feels like cooking that day. He prepares about fifteen items daily.
That's from our post of January 24, 2010. Brancaccio's Food Shop is two years old today, and it's always receiving glowing reviews. The shop is an important (many would say "essential") part of our community. Joe Brancaccio, how did we live without your store and your friendship?

AGGRAVATED HARASSMENT ON FORT HAMILTON PARKWAY

Please note:
Last Thursday at 4:45, a 14 year old girl on Ft. Hamilton Parkway and East 5th was stopped by a man, 30-ish, driving a navy or black Cadillac sort of car (that is all the description the police have). The man  tried to chat with the girl and offered her a lift. The girl said, NO, leave me alone, and walked away. The man pursued her. Smartly, she turned up a one way street going the wrong way for his car in order to lose him. He drove around the corner and came down the one way street and continued to pursue her. She took off and ran. While the guy was not caught, the police said the charge will be aggravated harassment.

This has been reported to the police but if you have teenage daughters, we are just spreading the word. This girl handled herself very well in this situation.

NO ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING TOMORROW

Due to impending snow, the New York City Department of Transportation has suspended alternate side of the street parking regulations citywide for tomorrow, Saturday, January 21st. Parking meters and all other posted parking restrictions will remain in effect.

The National Weather Service has forecast three to five inches of snow with a mix of sleet and rain in some areas for New York City on Saturday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Alternate side parking is also suspended on Monday, January 23rd, for Asian Lunar New Year.

NOT JUST A GOOD CHICKEN BUT A GREAT CHICKEN

A flattering review of the rotisserie chicken at Brancaccio’s Food Shop comes from Alexandra Penfold of the Blondie and Brownie food blog: the chicken is "Dressed with lemon, garlic, herbs and spices, then roasted perfectly." And the chicken only costs $6.00.

Alex tells you how to increase your odds of getting a chicken on the day you want one--and that's good to know because a lot of people want them.

KENSINGTON'S RECORDING STUDIO: SYSTEMS TWO

Two informative articles about Kensington's recording studio, Systems Two, have been posted on Sonic Scoop: NYC Studio Tour: South Brooklyn and Rich Lamb --- Nomad Engineer: The Favorite Studios of an NY Freelancer (Part I).

Founder and engineer Joe Marciano started Systems Two thirty-seven years ago. Writer Justin Colletti describes the studio as "arguably, one of the hottest spots for jazz recording in the United States" and adds that it's also recorded "pop, rock, classical and world artists for a variety of labels."

Rich Lamb writes "I love these people and I love this place — I open up a mic and it always sounds good."

The list of equipment that they got from other places and musicians is quite impressive!
