From Prospect Farm:

Please join Big Reuse, the District 39 Tree Care Team, Council Member Shahana Hanif’s Office, Field Form, and Prospect Farm for a couple hours of street tree care.

 

Big Reuse will provide a brief tutorial on street tree care essentials, and the benefits of compost application. Also, our friends from Field Form will share information about the use of biochar in soil amendment for tree health.

 

Then, we will fan out in teams to freshen up the tree beds by picking up garbage, weeding, cultivating soil, and applying compost on Prospect Avenue and neighboring side streets.

 

All supplies are provided. 

All ages are welcome. Volunteers 16 years or younger must provide a completed STC Minor Waiver + Photo Release PDF signed by parent/guardian in order to participate. Email austin@bigreuse.org with any questions. Bring the hard copy to hand in prior to the event or email the form.

EARTH DAY: CELEBRATE MOTHER EARTH AT PROSPECT FARM (FREE)

Earth Day Celebration

Honor Mother Earth at Prospect Farm's Earth Day celebration. All ages and all neighbors are welcome.

 

The day will feature eco arts & crafts projects for all ages, a plant swap, seed planting, a compost giveaway, tours of the garden, a tag sale, and baked goods for sale.

 

On the tours, learn how the gardeners make compost and grow vegetables, fruit, and beneficial native plants 

Local band Protectors of the Woods will provide live music from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and that will be followed by an open community jam for everyone to join in on. 

 

The celebration will be held on Saturday, April 18th, from noon to 4:00 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, April 25th, also from noon to 4:00 p.m.  

Prospect Farm’s open hours are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

 

Compost drop off hours are 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

FOOD PANTRY FUND RAISER AT PROSPECT FARM

 

Food Pantry Fund Raiser

Saturday, November 22nd

11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

 

Prospect Farm will hold a fund raiser for People In Need Inc. and CHiPS, two local organizations that have been supporting SNAP recipients.

 

A bake sale, a raffle, and an open music jam will be featured. Plus, you'll be able to make shakers from locust beans to play during the music jam.

 

People in Need serves hot meals and distributes culturally-appropriate groceries every Sunday.

 

CHiPS brings its mobile food pantry to Kensington Plaza every other Friday to distribute free groceries, fruit, and vegetables.

 

Prospect Farm is a non-profit, cooperative project for growing food.

SAVE COMMUNITY COMPOSTING; IT'S ON THE NYC BUDGET CHOPPING BLOCK

Update from GrowNYC:

As you may know, GrowNYC received temporary financial support from an anonymous donor allowing us to continue our food scrap collection program beyond this month’s scheduled closure dates. This will allow us to continue important work as we advocate for the restoration of the program in FY25 city budget.

Our partners in the NYC Compost Project (Big Reuse, Earth Matter, LES Ecology Center) announced a new philanthropic campaign led by our friends at Mill to support community composting programs impacted by the city’s budget cuts.

$350k in funding has been provided by Mill and other donors. Learn more about how to get involved in this effort at mill.com/nyc or reach out to nyccompost@mill.com!

Why it matters: For decades, the local New York composting community has been hard at work keeping wasted food out of the landfill, supporting our gardens, trees and parks and helping the planet! GrowNYC and others rely on these essential partner sites to process the scraps collected at our collection sites.

We celebrate this temporary reprieve but we want to make it clear: our collective effort to preserve community composting continues until city funding is restored for all community composting initiatives!

In Brooklyn and in Queens, the Sanitation Department's curbside composting program now includes mandatory separation of leaf and yard waste from other trash:

Leaf and yard waste separation from trash is now mandatory. Beginning October 2 [2023] in Brooklyn, there is a 3-month warning period before residents are subject to fines.

In addition to that,

Separation of food waste and food-soiled paper from trash is now mandatory. The warning period for Brooklyn (and all boroughs as service expands) runs through Spring 2025. Starting Spring 2025, ALL NYC residents will be subject to fines.

If the fines by the city are severe, it's possible that every owner of every building in every borough will comply with the law. 

 

But the fine for not separating compostable matter won't go into effect for another year-and-a-half. And that's a major reason for GrowNYC's petition to halt the elimination of community composting.

 

From the East Fourth Street Community Garden:

If the City does not restore funding for community composting, the East Fourth Street Community Garden won’t be able to offer food scrap collection via Big Reuse next spring. Please sign the petition, if you compost at the garden!

About Prospect Farm

Welcome to the Prospect Farm, a non-profit, cooperative project in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, that is working together to grow food in a formerly vacant lot, owned by Tom Angotti and Emma Matos, with the mission toward creating a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm that can serve our community.

'Tis spring!

We are off to an early start! Over the past three weeks, we have planted peas, radishes, beans, cucumbers, and a variety of leafy greens. This year more than ever we are being mindful of our soil, by rotating crops, turning over our cover crops (largely nitrogen-fixing vetch), and adding lots of compost.

We had our fruit trees pruned in early March, and we are opening up a few new small flower beds on the hillside. A group of our members will be planting heirloom flowers and vegetables with the intention of saving the seeds.
    
Now we invite you all to come by for our Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 24, from 11 until 2 for a number of activities:

You can also join Aaron Morales from our compost committee for a virtual Compost 101 workshop on April 22nd and April 24 at 7 PM:
Aaron will lead you through the ins-and-outs of composting and show what happens to your food waste when you drop it off at a local compost site. One of our founding members, Eileen Anderson, will also have her work displayed at the Brooklyn Quilters' Guild Earth Day Fence Show at Prospect Park West and Windsor Place from 11 until 4 on April 24th (same day as our event!). Not to be missed!

In addition to collecting public food scraps, we also have our own on-site composting operation; we grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs in over a dozen communal garden beds; we host public events, visiting classes, and youth science experiments; and a lot more. All of this 100% relies on volunteer labor and donated funds to keep our compost composting, our garden green, and our built infrastructure sturdy.

 

Some of our projects for this summer include building new raised beds, improving our rainwater harvester system, installing a patio in anticipation of hosting workshops on our site, and updating our compost system in order to increase capacity.

COMPOST DROP-OFF TWICE A WEEK AT PROSPECT FARM

 

UPDATE: Starting this Wednesday, March 17th, food scraps can be dropped off for composting at Prospect Farm every Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This drop-off time is in addition to the weekly 11:00 a.m. to noon collection on Saturdays.

Prospect Farm in Windsor Terrace has announced that compost can once again be dropped off there on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon. May 9th was the last day that drop-offs were accepted because the garden had received an overwhelming amount of compost. Sanitation Department curbside pick-ups are suspended through June 30, 2021.

After a pandemic-related hiatus, Prospect Farm is now back to collecting our neighborhood's food scraps, diverting them from landfills, and making healthy and fertile compost to feed our local soils.

Mask wearing and physical distancing guidelines will be enforced so please be respectful.
