Food Pantry Fund Raiser

Saturday, November 22nd

11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

 

Prospect Farm will hold a fund raiser for People In Need Inc. and CHiPS, two local organizations that have been supporting SNAP recipients.

 

A bake sale, a raffle, and an open music jam will be featured. Plus, you'll be able to make shakers from locust beans to play during the music jam.

 

People in Need serves hot meals and distributes culturally-appropriate groceries every Sunday.

 

CHiPS brings its mobile food pantry to Kensington Plaza every other Friday to distribute free groceries, fruit, and vegetables.

 

Prospect Farm is a non-profit, cooperative project for growing food.

Free Local Food Resources: Food Pantries, Mobile Food Pantries, Food Distribution Sites, and Meals 

 

Get free food or donate food for others or donate money so that others can buy food themselves. 

 

To help tackle the chronic problem of food insecurity, a number of free food resources have been operating in Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and points beyond.

 

Before visiting the locations, call to make sure they're not closed for the day or longer or permanently. Some sites require a phone call in advance to register.

 

In response to the federal government's record-setting shutdown that led to SNAP benefits expiring as of Saturday, November 1st, New York "Governor Hochul Declares State of Emergency and Initiates New Actions in Response to Trump Administration Cutting Off Food Assistance to Nearly 3 Million New Yorkers Starting November 1," bringing the total amount of state funds allocated to $106 million.

Back to School Supply Giveaway

School supplies will be distributed for free at People in Need's 8th Annual Back to School Supply Giveaway on Sunday, August 25th, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For children to receive the supplies, they must be present at the event.

Donations of school supplies (notebooks, pencils, erasers, flash cards, pocket folders, backpacks, etc.) are welcome.

If you'd like to donate school supplies from an Amazon Wish List, scan the QR code in the flyer above.

Or drop them off in person at 766 Coney Island Avenue between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.on the Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday before the giveaway.

All money raised will be used to fund the following programs:  

-Youth programs including after-school, weekend clubs, summer activities, women empowerment including Info-workshops, conversation partner classes, craft classes and our digital literacy program.

-Also funding will be our farm stand, open to all distributions of food, home deliveries for seniors, support for domestic-violence victims, single-moms and low -income families, warm-clothing, school supplies and our holiday distribution.

Help People in Need (PIN), Pakistani American Youth Society (PAYS), and New York City Councilmember Rita Joseph (District 40) fight food insecurity at Thanksgiving. Together, they're requesting food donations for a Thanksgiving food drive.

Donated items will be accepted on November 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, and 20th, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at PIN, 766 Coney Island Avenue, between Cortelyou and Dorchester roads.

Food will be distributed to all members of the public on Tuesday, November 22nd, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at PAYS, 1001 Newkirk Avenue, between Coney Island Avenue and Westminster Road.

Home deliveries will be made to single mothers, seniors, and shelters on November 23rd and 28th.

The requested food items are turkey (halal, if possible), stuffing, cooking oil, potatoes, beans, rice, etc.

What role can everyday people, those in and outside of faith communities, play in creating a caring economy and building local community power that advocates for all neighbors’ needs? How have Brooklynites done this using mutual aid networks since the Pandemic hit New York last March? 

Panelists Whitney Hu, founder of South Brooklyn Mutual Aid, Nowshin Ali, founder of People in Need [in Kensington], and Shahana Hanif, interfaith activist and current City Council candidate [for District 39, which includes Kensington and Windsor Terrace], will reflect on their mutual aid work, its promise and limitations in the absence of government support, its challenges, and ways for those who want to continue to build a city that is more equitable and accountable to all peoples’ needs to get involved.
