THIS COOPERATIVE BULK ORDERING PROJECT PROVIDES YOU WITH FARM-FRESH FOOD WHILE ALSO SUPPORTING MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

From the Neighborhood Cooperative Food Project:

In 2020, a group of Kensington /Windsor Terrace/Ditmas Park neighbors launched a small bulk buying experiment to prioritize solidarity and safety in the way we buy food and support the local community and economy.

Our experiment is proving fruitful! And we welcome involvement from more members as our neighborhood needs continue to shift and grow.

Our volunteers currently fulfill 50-60 orders every other week, with around $1,000 of food going towards solidarity needs every round.

We order directly from nearby Lancaster Farm Co-Op and they deliver bi-weekly in bulk.

Neighbors pick up their farm-fresh items every other Wednesday morning in three neighborhoods:
  • Kensington, on E. 8th Street, near Caton Avenue, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Windsor Terrace, at Bartel-Pritchard Square, from 10:30 a.m. to noon
  • Flatbush/Ditmas Park, near Newkirk Plaza, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Sample items:
  • Organic Produce Box, mix of seasonal items: $35.10
  • Organic Spicy Greens/Arugula/Baby Spinach: $4.84/5 oz box
  • Kombucha: $3.32/12 oz bottle
  • Whole or 2% Milk, half gallon: $3.71-$3.97
  • Organic Yogurt: $4.21/32 oz
  • Organic Tofu: $2.90/15 oz
  • Organic Ground Beef: $10.46/lb
  • Organic Flour: $13.85/5 lb bag

The food is fresh and delicious! Every paying order helps to cover the cost of an order for those who need support. Each time you order, you can request a solidarity discount as needed, or contribute money towards groceries for others.

Participating in this project is a fantastic way to feel connected to your neighbors, plus the flexibility and adaptability make it really easy, as you do not need to worry about committing to a whole season of CSA deliveries when you may be traveling or unable to get through all of your items in just a couple of weeks.
However, the flexibility also makes the project tricky, as we never know exactly what the need will be with each order, nor do we know exactly how much coverage we will have to fulfill those needs.
Please get in touch if you are interested in helping out with your time and labor, a space for an additional distribution spot, a car to help move orders around the neighborhood, or new ideas for fundraising and support.
We are connected to the Kensington-Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid group.
Reach us at foodcoopproject@gmail.com to sign up and receive details and access to order forms [or leave a voicemail or text at (347-389-1848].
We can always use extra funds to help cover the gaps, so if you would like to make a donation to support solidarity orders, please send through the Open Collective site at https://opencollective.com/gotham-food-pantry/projects/kwtma.

About Kensington/Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid

Our motto is “If you need something, please ask. If you can give, please give.”

We aim for solidarity, not charity!

Launched on March 19th, 2020, KWT Mutual Aid is a grassroots volunteer organization created by neighbors for neighbors, with the objective of helping our community cope with the physical, mental, emotional, and economic hardships created by the COVID-19 crisis.

The idea is simple: we show solidarity through our actions and pool resources and support each others' needs.

Our neighborhoods include immigrant communities that are often denied financial support from the city, state, and federal government, neighbors who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and those living in vulnerable situations.

We partner with local groups, organizations, and neighbors to meet community needs, from assisting in maintaining food resources like the KWT Fridge and Purple Pantries, to prescription pick-ups, well-being phone check-ins, translation, support and guidance accessing government benefits, and providing emergency funds.

NON-PERISHABLE FOOD NEEDED FOR THE KWT TINY PURPLE PANTRY

To help relieve food insecurity and hunger in the neighborhood, Kensington-Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid (KWTMA) has set up the KWT Tiny Purple Pantry for non-perishable food. Donate food items if you can or take whatever donated items you need so that you can enjoy adequate and nutritious meals.

The outdoor pantry is on E. 4th Street in Windsor Terrace, just south of Fort Hamilton Parkway, alongside Jaya Yoga East.

Non-perishable food has a long shelf life and doesn't have to be refrigerated before it's opened. Some examples of food to donate are
  • fish (canned),
  • poultry (canned),
  • beans (canned and dried),
  • soup (canned and packaged),
  • vegetables (canned and dried),
  • fruit (canned and dried),
  • pasta, rice, and other grains,
  • dried herbs and spices,
  • condiments,
  • nuts and seeds,
  • peanut butter and other nut butters,
  • jelly, jam, preserves, honey,
  • fruit juice (canned and in cardboard),
  • shelf-stable milk,
  • non-dairy milk,
  • coffee,
  • tea,
  • dry cereal,
  • crackers, and
  • granola bars,
  • protein bars.

In addition to the pantry, KWTMA has set up an outdoor KWT Community Fridge. It's for perishable food, and it operates on the same philosophy of "Give what you can; take what you need." The fridge is located at 137 E. 2nd Street, off Fort Hamilton Parkway, next to the laundromat. You can read about it at https://karmabrooklyn.blogspot.com/2021/03/which-food-to-donate-to-community.html.
