FUND RAISER FOR IMMIGRANT FAMILY'S LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

Fund Raiser for Immigrant Family’s Legal Defense Fund
              Sunday, February 10th, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Occupy Kensington is raising legal defense funds for a Brooklyn-connected, immigrant family that fled Central American political repression in fear for their lives, with small children in tow. Their case could not be more typical or dire. A member of their family who has a debilitating disease is being detained in a distant state, where his health and weight are rapidly deteriorating.

Join Occupy Kensington for a fund raiser featuring music and refreshments on Sunday, February 10th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Learn more about the immigrant family and donate to the defense fund for their legal costs and bond. Enjoy the company of hopeful and determined activist neighbors.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, you can donate to the family's defense fund through GoFundMe.

LEGO CAMP DURING PRESIDENTS' WEEK

Presidents' Week Lego Camp
Tuesday, February 19th, through Friday, February 22nd
mornings and afternoons

Eleanor Rodgers will offer Lego Camp during Presidents' Week from Tuesday, February 19th, through Friday, February 22nd, at The Church of the Holy Apostles, 612 Greenwood Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and E. 7th Street, in Windsor Terrace.

Register your child for any day (or days) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extended hours will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (see below).

For the first two hours of the day, kids will work in teams to build large-scale projects, followed by a break for lunch and a run-around at Greenwood Playground (weather permitting). The last hour will be spent adding smaller details to the scenes and pulling them all together to create one giant scene to photograph and show to parents at pick-up.

From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., kids can help destroy the creation and sort and pack the Lego, hang out and play, or build their own smaller Lego project.

The camp will be loosely based around the story of The Lego Movie 2.

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, kids will build a classic Lego city using a mixture of building from instructions with Lego sets and designing their own buildings. This will be Bricksburg, the city Emmet lives in in The Lego Movie (1).

On Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign your child up to go to Eleanor's apartment after camp (Albemarle Road and E 5th Street) to watch The Lego Movie (1).

On Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., register your child for a group trip to the Nitehawk Theater to see The Lego Movie 2. Or you can pick them up at 3:00 p.m. and join the group at the theater.

On Thursday and Friday, the morning will be spent building scenes from Lego Movie 2: Apocalypseburg and planets and characters from the Sistar system.

On Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign up your child to watch a movie at Eleanor's apartment (either Lego Batman or Lego Ninjago).

On Friday, camp will end at 3:00 p.m. with no extra hours.

Cost:
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: $60
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: $90
3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.: $25
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.: $35 (movie ticket included)

Siblings get 33% off the cost.

OCEAN PARKWAY GREEN SPACE UPGRADE; REZONING IN EAST WINDSOR TERRACE

Ocean Parkway Pedestrian Bridge - Parks Upgrades;
Rezoning International Baptist Church Property and Other Stable Brooklyn/East Windsor Terrace Locations
Wednesday January 23rd, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

From New York City Councilmember Brad Lander
The New York City Parks Department will discuss potential upgrades to the two green spaces on either side of the Ocean Parkway Service Road.

Last year Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and I allocated $650,000 to refurbish the sitting area on East 8th Street and the park on Sherman Street, and at this meeting the Parks Department will update us on their plans and listen to your suggestions for how to improve these spaces.

We will also share updates on the different development projects in the "Stable Brooklyn" area, including the rezoning of nearby 57 Caton Place, and the preservation of Kensington Stables.

We will have a presentation from the developers of 312 Coney Island Avenue (where the International Baptist Church is located). They will present a new proposal to rezone the property and build a mixed-use development with residential units. The presentation is not part of formal land use review process. Instead, this community meeting is an opportunity to offer feedback on the proposal before a rezoning application is filed.

I understand that there are many different development projects underway in this part of the neighborhood, so we will have time to share updates, think holistically about the broader issues and needs facing the area, and talk about how neighbors can be involved.

Please RSVP by emailing Catherine Zinnel in my District Office at czinnel @ council.nyc.gov.

Meeting location
P.S. 130 Upper School
713 Caton Avenue

between E. 7th and E. 8th streets
Windsor Terrace - Kensington, Brooklyn

BUILD ON THE PROGRESSIVE WAVE WITH OCCUPY KENSINGTON

Conversation opened. 1 unread message.
From Occupy Kensington

Let’s Build on the Progressive Wave!

Join Us to Shape a Fresh Activist Agenda for 2019.

Sunday January 27 @ 7:30
309 E5th St

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

2019 is already shaping up to be a year of grave challenges and hopeful opportunities. The progressive wave that swept a solid Democratic majority into Albany for the first time in years opens up new opportunities to push forward a people's agenda. Meanwhile, the plight of our brothers and sisters seeking refuge in this country, as well as our own citizens and noncitizens living under threat of racism and poverty, cries to us out for redress.

Given the new landscape of state-level politics, Occupy Kensington would like to propose adding to our foci — while still remaining at the ready to address immigration or white supremacist issues arising in Kensington. Join us to discuss this and more Sun. Jan 27th at 7:30, 309 E. 5th Street  5th Street.

Three proposed areas of focus:

Housing crisis: There is a fresh opportunity and urgent need to review rent laws in Albany. Middle class and poor families alike in our neighborhood, across lines of race and citizenship status, live under the stress of rapidly rising rents.

Amazon’s invasion of NYC: The proposed corporate headquarters in Queens includes a deal that not only will suck up much needed tax dollars, placing them in the pockets of the richest corporate mogul on the planet, but will also act as a gentrification juggernaut — which connects directly to the housing crisis. It also relates to the less publicized, ongoing efforts to rezone nearby Sunset Park's industrial district (in which Amazon was at one point interested) — with the inevitable loss of industrial jobs and displacement of longtime residents through higher rents.

Healthcare: Stakes couldn't be higher. The New York Health Act has already passed the State Assembly four years in a row. Grassroots pressure is needed to ensure State Senate passage and Gov. Cuomo's (not-so-easy-to-get) signature. Passage in a state the size of New York would reverberate throughout the nation. Canada's healthcare system became inevitable when a single province (Saskatchewan) passed its own, successful, single-payer plan.
