BALINESE PERCUSSION GROUP TO PRESENT WORKSHOP AND CONCERT

Gamelan Yowana Sari

Sunday, May 21st, 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Learn and perform traditional Balinese Gamelan music. A Gamelan workshop and a concert will take place outdoors in Windsor Terrace on Sunday, May 21st, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Balinese percussion group Gamelan Yowana Sari will offer a hands-on workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. They'll give participants instruction on technique, composition, and ensemble skills of traditional Balinese Gamelan music.

Workshop participants will then perform one piece ("Sekatian") in the concert that follows the workshop. The concert will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

The event will be held outdoors on the lawn, weather permitting. It'll be held indoors if the weather is rainy.

A limited number of tickets is available for the workshop, which is recommended for anyone from around age ten to adults. Younger children who can sit through a one-hour+ music class can attend with a guardian.

WINDSOR TERRACE LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS

Two children's programs formerly held in the temporarily-closed Windsor Terrace Library will resume in September in other venues. 

Babies & Books will again be offered at the JCC Brooklyn Windsor Terrace, 1224 Prospect Avenue, corner of Vanderbilt Street, starting on Thursday, September 12th, at 10:30 a.m.

Toddler Time with Miss Cindy will again meet at the Church of the Holy Apostles at 612 Greenwood Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and E. 7th Street. It'll be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. on September 17th and 24th, October 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, November 19th and 26th, and December 3rd, 10th, and 17th.

Children from ages 0 to 4 usually attend both programs, although Babies & Books usually tends toward ages 0 to 2 while Toddler Time caters to ages 2 to 4.

Screening of The Homestretch

A free screening of The Homestretch, a documentary film that follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future, will take place at The Church of the Holy Apostles on Sunday, June 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. 

Through haunting images, intimate scenes, and first-person narratives, these teens take the audience on their journeys of struggle and triumph. As their stories unfold, the film connects viewers deeply with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights. The film provides a powerful, original perspective on what it means to be young, homeless, and building a future in America today.
 

A discussion with the filmmaker (and parishioner) Kirsten Kelly will follow the screening.

The Homestretch has not been rated. It runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

LEGO CAMP DURING PRESIDENTS' WEEK

Presidents' Week Lego Camp

Tuesday, February 19th, through Friday, February 22nd

Eleanor Rodgers will offer Lego Camp during Presidents' Week from Tuesday, February 19th, through Friday, February 22nd, at The Church of the Holy Apostles, 612 Greenwood Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and E. 7th Street, in Windsor Terrace.

Register your child for any day (or days) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extended hours will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (see below).

For the first two hours of the day, kids will work in teams to build large-scale projects, followed by a break for lunch and a run-around at Greenwood Playground (weather permitting). The last hour will be spent adding smaller details to the scenes and pulling them all together to create one giant scene to photograph and show to parents at pick-up.

From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., kids can help destroy the creation and sort and pack the Lego, hang out and play, or build their own smaller Lego project.

The camp will be loosely based around the story of The Lego Movie 2.

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, kids will build a classic Lego city using a mixture of building from instructions with Lego sets and designing their own buildings. This will be Bricksburg, the city Emmet lives in in The Lego Movie (1). 

On Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign your child up to go to Eleanor's apartment after camp (Albemarle Road and E 5th Street) to watch The Lego Movie (1). 

On Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., register your child for a group trip to the Nitehawk Theater to see The Lego Movie 2. Or you can pick them up at 3:00 p.m. and join the group at the theater.

On Thursday and Friday, the morning will be spent building scenes from Lego Movie 2: Apocalypseburg and planets and characters from the Sistar system.

On Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign up your child to watch a movie at Eleanor's apartment (either Lego Batman or Lego Ninjago).

On Friday, camp will end at 3:00 p.m. with no extra hours.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS: BRING YOUR PETS (FREE)

Blessing of the Animals

Sunday, September 30th, 4:00 p.m.

All neighbors are invited to bring their pets, stuffed animals, or pictures of pets to the annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, September 30th, at 4:00 p.m. 

Sing along to live music and say a few prayers to peace that are attributed to St. Francis. Each pet will be blessed. This will take place outside on the lawn.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue will have a table set up there so people can sign up to volunteer to walk a shelter dog or help in other ways. Also, meet some of the rescued animals that are available for adoption. 

Snacks and treats will be available for purchase. All donations will be given to Sean Casey Animal Rescue.

SCREENING OF "IN OUR BACKYARD: SEX TRAFFICKING IN BROOKLYN"

      In Our Backyard: A Documentary on Sex Trafficking in Brooklyn

In Our Backyard: A Documentary on Sex Trafficking in Brooklyn, will be shown in Windsor Terrace.

"In Our Backyard is an investigative look into the widely unknown and unspoken world of sex trafficking in Brooklyn, documenting the emotional stories of three recent survivors while also presenting the work of determined aid organizations, law enforcement agencies and politicians. The film aims to raise awareness and fight this serious epidemic."

A Q&A and discussion will follow with a survivor-advocate; filmmaker and native Brooklynite Danielle Rose; and Mother Adrian Dannhauser, Chair of the Episcopal Diocese of New York's Task Force Against Human Trafficking.

This event is open to the public. It is not suitable for children.

Holy Apostles Church will host the screening on Sunday, June 3rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations of $5-$10 are welcome to defray expenses.

SING-ALONG FUND RAISER FOR PUERTO RICO

Sing-Along with Lucy and Lloyd

Saturday, February 10th, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

"Songs of Peace & Justice: A Fundraiser for Puerto Rico" is a sing-along Mardi Gras party with Lucy Kalantari and Lloyd Miller--fixtures of the children's sing-along circuit--to raise funds for a church community in Lares, Puerto Rico.

Windsor Terrace's Church of the Holy Apostles previously supported the church in getting two cisterns so that fresh water would be available.

The suggested donation is $20.00 per family. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability to pay.

Share music and food with your neighbors on Saturday, February 10th, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at Church of the Holy Apostles while giving much-needed help to the Lares church community.

Brooklyn Commune and Butterfunk Kitchen will donate what's sure to be delightfully tasty food and refreshments to the event.

REGROW PUERTO RICO BENEFIT RECEPTION

Regrow Puerto Rico Benefit Reception

Monday, November 13th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

A benefit to help rebuild the still-devastated Puerto Rico will feature live music by Grammy award-winning jazz musician Arturo O'Farrill and his sons Zach and Adam.

Hors d'oeuvres will be prepared by Puerto Rican guest chef Santana Benitez. Wines and Harlem Blue Wheat Ale will be provided. 

The suggested donation is $50, but any amount will be appreciated. The proceeds will be donated to #RegrowPuertoRico to help rebuild sustainable agriculture.
