A chess tournament for school-age children will be held at the Windsor Terrace Library on Saturday, May 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

 

Bilimly will host the free tournament, which is unrated. The winners will be awarded medals.

Our Quad Chess Tournaments are friendly, local events designed to give young players meaningful tournament experience in a supportive environment. These events are held at branches of the Brooklyn Public Library and are completely free for kids in our community. 

Our goal is simple: to strengthen young players, build confidence, and provide local tournament opportunities right here in Brooklyn so families don’t have to travel far to enjoy quality chess events.

FREE TICKETS TO SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK: TWELFTH NIGHT

Shakespeare in the Park Ticket Distribution - Twelfth Night 

Thursday, August 28th

noon to 2:00 p.m.

From Windsor Terrace Library:

The Windsor Terrace Library will serve as a distribution site for tickets for the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Twelfth Night.” A limited number of free ticket vouchers will be distributed on the day of select performances.

Public Theater Patron ID is required to receive a ticket voucher, and we encourage you to create or confirm your ID before arrival by visiting publictheater.org/login. Ticket vouchers are distributed at 12PM (Noon). Borough distributions will end when all the ticket vouchers have been distributed or at 2PM, whichever occurs first.

The vouchers are guaranteed tickets as long as the voucher holders exchange them for the tickets at The Delacorte between 5:30pm-7:30pm that evening. The vouchers are only valid for Thursday, August 28.

• People waiting for ticket vouchers must line up along the paths designated by the borough distribution partner and The Public Theater staff.
• Ticket vouchers are redeemable only for same-day performances.
• Seat locations are distributed randomly upon redemption, not based on a person's redemption time at The Delacorte Theater Box Office.
• All ticket vouchers must be exchanged for tickets at The Delacorte Theater Box Office in Central Park between 5:30PM and 7:30PM.
• Ticket vouchers are only valid until 7:30PM for the performance on the day they are issued.
• Each person (age 5+) may receive up to two (2) ticket vouchers while supplies last.
• Accessible seating is limited at The Delacorte. For assistance in acquiring accessible seating during our borough distributions, please speak to a member of The Public Theater staff upon arrival at the borough distribution location.
  • These distributions are typically hosted outdoors at various locations, and access to shade, seating, restrooms, and physical access to the distribution facilities varies per location. We encourage you to contact a site before attending a borough distribution to confirm specifics of their site regarding their facility and your specific access needs.

Shakespeare in the Park performances take place at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. 

The theater is accessible by entering the park at either 81st Street and Central Park West or at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.

This is a series of two classes on the basics of stock options.

 

In our recent classes, we have talked about investing in fixed income instruments, stocks, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds. More investors now like to trade using stock options and now many funds (ETFs and Mutual Funds) use stock options as part of their strategy and operating practice.

 

In this class, we will talk about the basic concepts to foster an appreciation of these contracts.

Kensington Library Storytime Room, 4207 18th Avenue:  Learn the basics of crocheting and knitting at the Crochet/Knit Club. All skill levels are welcome. Yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks are provided for the lesson, but you can bring your own supplies, if you prefer. Classes are held twice a month on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All ages are welcome.

 

Windsor Terrace Library Meeting Room, 160 E. 5th Street at Fort Hamilton Parkway: Work on your knitting, crocheting, sewing, and other fiber arts projects with your neighbors while sipping tea at Stitch 'n Sip: Knitting, Crocheting, & Sewing. Adult Beginner Knitting lessons are available on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Open to knitters at all levels.

 

Bad Therapy Bar, 1008 Cortelyou Road: The Craft Circle is an informal monthly meetup where people knit, crochet, and work on other crafts. It is for all levels; learners are welcome. The meetup is dog-friendly.

 

The Craft Salon, 625 Church Avenue: The knitting and crocheting meetup is for adults at all levels of competence, although teenagers are also welcome. Owner Dari Litchman is available to teach you how to knit or crochet. From time to time, yarn swapping takes place. The meetups are always on a Sunday but are not always on the fourth Sunday.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 2805 Fort Hamilton Parkway: The sewing and crochet group meets on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Center in the rectory (next to the church). All are welcome.

LIBRARY OPEN ON SUNDAYS IN BOROUGH PARK

Recent cuts to New York City's budget led to seven-day-a-week service being cut to six days a week in New York City's three library systems (New York, Brooklyn, and Queens).

 

Weekend service was limited to Saturdays at all Brooklyn branches, including the Kensington, Windsor Terrace, Cortelyou, and Borough Park branches.

 

However, after discussions between Brooklyn Public Library president Linda Johnson and elected officials representing Borough Park, the weekend day that the Borough Park branch is open has been changed from Saturday to Sunday.

 

All other branches are still open on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

 

The branch is fully accessible.

 

To prevent additional budget cuts to libraries for the upcoming fiscal year, please sign a form addressed to Mayor Adams, City Council Speaker Adams, Council Majority Leader Farías, Committee on Libraries Chair Rivera, Council Finance Chair Brannan, and your City Councilmember.

FREE PERSONAL FINANCE COURSES

 

From The Kensington Stewards:

 

The Kensington Stewards invite you to attend "Personal Finance: Forms of Loans and Investing in Fixed Income," a free two-part course on borrowing and lending.

 

The first session will cover consumer borrowing (mortgages, student loans, car loans, and credit cards). The second one will cover fixed income investing (bank CDs, bonds, fixed income funds, such as ETFs, and Mutual Funds).

 

The course will be held on Thursday, February 8th, and Thursday, February 15th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

A free three-part series, "Introduction to Personal Finance Workshop," will be offered at the Kensington Library on Tuesday nights in March from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Additional details are not yet available.

The MTA Metro Card Van will be parked in front of the Windsor Terrace Library on Thursday, November 30th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide the following services:

 

• Get help with a Reduced-Fare application
• Transfer MetroCard balances (Full fare and Reduced-Fare)
• Exchange a damaged Reduced-Fare MetroCard for a temporary replacement
• Report a lost/stolen Reduced-Fare MetroCard
• Answer questions about any MetroCard-related issues
• Answer questions about the OMNY Program
  

Note: Sales buses and vans are not making credit card transactions. You can still buy a MetroCard using cash or transfer value from a Reduced-Fare MetroCard.

Join Big Reuse educator(s) for an introduction to composting. Learn about composting programs and get a primer on various forms of small scale composting that you can do at home or with your neighbors at a community scale.

 

Please bring any questions you may have about composting at home or participating in NYC’s free composting services.

Big Reuse advances New York City’s sustainable urban environment through circular economy programs that divert waste from our landfills and reduce greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

 

That same afternoon, from noon to 4:00 p.m., kitchen containers will be given away.

Curbside composting service begins in Brooklyn on Oct 2nd! Learn helpful tips and best practices from a DSNY representative for using your building's brown bin and pick up your free Kitchen Containers and paper lawn & leaf bags.

Kitchen Containers are small bins to keep the food scraps in your kitchen separate from your trash and other recyclables. These containers allow you to easily store your food waste before putting it into your brown bin.

"FITNESS WITH AKWESI": FITNESS FOR OLDER ADULTS (FREE)

 

"Fitness with Akwesi"

Wednesdays, May 24th and 31st,

"Fitness with Akwesi" is a free four-week program for older adults that will incorporate chair yoga, standing exercises, and other gentle movement practices, under the able guidance of Akwesi Asante.

 

Akwesi has served in the health and wellness community for thirty years and has worked with seniors since 1992, teaching them movement and exercise.

 

He has also worked as a professional performance artist as an actor, dancer, acrobat/stuntman, musician, circus arts performer, and martial artist.

 

Akwesi has served as a consultant for Catholic Charities, Services for the Aging, and Arthritis Foundation.
