IMPROVE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BY SERVING ON A COMMUNITY BOARD

Improve your neighborhood and its quality of life by serving on Community Board 7, 12, or 14. To apply, fill out the application posted at https://form.jotform.com/232983867919175 by Monday, February 19th.

"Decisions that affect transportation, new development, sanitation, street safety and more in your community are being made all the time and the best decisions happen when more local people contribute their ideas and perspectives. That’s what joining your local community board is all about.

As the most grassroots level of government, community boards help shape important decisions that have a direct impact on life in your neighborhood. Get involved in making your city work better for yourself, your family, and your neighbors. The application process is now in full swing. You can check your eligibility and apply by February 19th here."
Assemblymember Robert Carroll

"Each board has up to 50 members, all volunteers, and have no minimum number of members. Board members serve via staggered two-year terms, which means half must be reappointed or replaced every year.

All of those people are appointed by their own borough president. City Council members can recommend new applicants, but the final call rests with the BP."

"Community boards create opportunities for active, local participation in public decision making processes. They articulate community needs; inform services provided; and reflect New York City’s remarkable diversity."

"The 18 Community Boards found within Brooklyn represent the needs of these neighborhoods, weighing in on important issues of residents, business owners, and other stakeholders. With the ability to deliver city services, manage a budget, and have oversight in land use and zoning issues, community board members play a critical role at preserving the grassroots rights within their community."

"You must be a New York City resident to serve on a community board. To qualify for a particular board, you must live, work in, or have a professional or other significant interest within the board's district. The Office of the Brooklyn Borough President considers a professional or other significant interest in the board’s district as:
  1. An employee of a city agency or organization located in the district and serving its residents.
  2. A member of the board of directors of an organization based in the district.
  3. A student attending a school located in the district.
  4. A property or business owner."

NEW BOUNDARIES OF CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 39 (KENSINGTON, WINDSOR TERRACE, AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS)

The boundaries of congressional, state, and local legislative districts are redrawn every ten years, after each federal decennial census. The redrawing is based on changes in a district's population size and ethnic makeup, as shown in the census.

New York City's City Council districts were redrawn in 2023 (and went into effect this month), with a population goal for each district of about 172,882 residents. The 2020 census population for City Council District 39 is 174,284. (A deviation of five percent is allowed so that the most-populated district is no more than five percent larger than the least-populated.)

On the above map of City Council District 39, the district's previous boundaries, in effect from 2013 to 2023, are indicated by a teal/blue-green line, and the boundaries for the years 2023 to 2033 are indicated by a purple one.

An analysis of the district's demographics (race, ethnicity, income, and political affiliation) is available in The City's "Know your district: City Council District 39."

About
The Kensington Stewards

Mission

The mission of The Kensington Stewards (TKS) is to foster and support mutual appreciation and understanding, strengthening the connections among the residents of Kensington, Brooklyn, through the arts, cultural events, community gatherings and conversation.

How do we follow our Mission?

The Kensington Stewards is an all-volunteer group of residents of the Kensington, Brooklyn, neighborhood. We focus our energy and creative ideas on introducing Kensington's diverse demographic groups to one another so that we can learn about each other's traditions and cultures, gain an appreciation and understanding of one another, and grow together.

Our programs showcase the arts—painting, music, dance, drama—and culture for children and adults and provide space for rallies and other supportive, community-oriented events.

As a not-for-profit charitable organization, some of our events are made possible through grants from supporting organizations. Other events are funded by our treasury, requiring continual donations to ensure that we can present programming that appeals to our neighbors and fulfills our mission.

Working with government agencies and other community groups, we also assist in maintaining one public open space: The Kensington Plaza, where we offer programming. Kensington Plaza is located in front of Walgreens at 114 Beverley Road, near Church Avenue.

To learn more about The Kensington Stewards and our events, follow our public group on Facebook:
