"Decisions that affect transportation, new
development, sanitation, street safety and more in your community are
being made all the time and the best decisions happen when more local
people contribute their ideas and perspectives. That’s what joining your
local community board is all about.
As the most grassroots level of
government, community boards help shape important decisions that have a
direct impact on life in your neighborhood. Get involved
in making your city work better for yourself, your family, and your
neighbors. The application process is now in full swing. You can check your eligibility and apply by February 19th here."
Assemblymember Robert Carroll
"Each board has up to 50 members, all volunteers, and have no minimum
number of members. Board members serve via staggered two-year terms,
which means half must be reappointed or replaced every year.
All of those people are appointed by their own borough president.
City Council members can recommend new applicants, but the final call
rests with the BP."
"Community boards create opportunities for active, local participation in
public decision making processes. They articulate community needs;
inform services provided; and reflect New York City’s remarkable
diversity."
"The 18 Community Boards found within Brooklyn represent the needs of these neighborhoods, weighing in on important issues of residents, business owners, and other stakeholders. With the ability to deliver city services, manage a budget, and have oversight in land use and zoning issues, community board members play a critical role at preserving the grassroots rights within their community."
"You must be a New York City resident to serve on a community board.
To qualify for a particular board, you must live, work in, or have a
professional or other significant interest within the board's district.
The Office of the Brooklyn Borough President considers a professional or

- A member of the board of directors of an organization based in the district.
- A student attending a school located in the district.
