ROCKY'S PIZZERIA IS NAMED TO THE HALL OF FAME

Eater NY agrees with the locals that Kensington has got some fine pizza.

Eater NY's senior critic, Robert Sietsema, named Korner Pizza as one of his ten favorite New York City pizzerias in July. He inducted Korner and the other nine pizzerias into the Eater NY Neighborhood Pizzeria Hall of Fame.

This month, he chose ten more favorites to induct, and Rocky's Pizzeria is one of them.

At Korner, "The regular cheese slice is perfection itself." And at Rocky's, "The plain cheese slice is great, but why not go for the more spectacular ziti slice."

For a pizzeria to qualify for the Hall of Fame, "It must sell pizza by the slice; cook its pies in stacked gas ovens that burn at around 550 degrees or below; and, in general, not be part of a chain with multiple outlets."

Korner is at 226 Church Ave., at the corner of E. 3rd Street. Rocky's is at 474 Coney Island Avenue, at the corner of Church Ave.

POLICE OFFICERS PATROLLING WINDSOR TERRACE WILL MEET WITH RESIDENTS

Meeting with Neighborhood Coordination Officers for Windsor Terrace
                            Thursday, October 27th, 7:00 p.m.

The two Neighborhood Coordination Officers who patrol Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope will meet again with residents and business owners in those three neighborhoods.

Police Officers Dan McGrath and Francis Ghanney will hold the third monthly community meeting on Tuesday, October 27th, at 7:00 p.m

The meeting is only for people living and/or working in the three neighborhoods, shown as Sector A within the 72nd Precinct on the map below.

McGrath and Ghanney will be updating the community about crime and other conditions that they address and are currently combating.

They invite you to voice your concerns and complaints and tell them about any conditions you're dealing with that would be of interest to the police.

Concerns might include

  • violent street crime,
  • home burglaries,
  • stolen packages,
  • pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and
  • persistent loud noise.

The 72nd Precinct was divided into four sectors several months ago, as part of a new policing model ("community policing"). Before that, the precinct had eight sectors. As a result of the reapportionment, additional officers were assigned to the precinct.

An article in Brooklyn Reporter explains the significance of this new way of policing.

Officer McGrath's phone number is (917) 853-2601. His e-mail address is daniel.mcgrath @ nypd.org. Last October, he was named Police Officer of the Year.

between Prospect Avenue and Windsor Place
Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn

Enter Shepherd's Hall through the parking lot next to the church.

END SPEEDING ON 11TH AVENUE IN FRONT OF P.S. 154

Car and truck drivers on 11th Avenue in front of P.S. 154 need to slow down. They speed past the school, endangering children and adults.

The Department of Transportation has implemented quite a few of the traffic-calming requests made by residents. One much-needed street safety improvement in Windsor Terrace has been the addition of speed humps to side streets.

11th Avenue needs a speed hump too, along with other traffic-calming measures that will slow down speeding cars and big trucks coming from the Prospect Expressway.

The majority of P.S. 154's students and staff cross 11th Avenue twice a day on their way to and from the school. A crossing guard is there in the morning and again in the afternoon at pickup time. But frequently, the guard must step in front of moving vehicles to perform the job of getting children, their families, and school staff safely across the street.

During the hours that the guard is not on duty, students, their families, school staff, and the neighbors cross at an even greater risk to themselves.

The importance of smoothly-flowing traffic on city streets is understood. Still, the danger posed at the intersection requires an urgent remedy in the form of a speed hump and either a stop sign or traffic light to slow drivers down.

Please sign a petition on the Transportation Alternatives website requesting those traffic-calming measures. The petition will be delivered to our City Councilmember, Brad Lander.
