EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WT PRE-SCHOOL STOLE SCHOOL FUNDS

The Therapy and Learning Center will have to find a new executive director, now that executive director Silvia Kuper has resigned upon orders by New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. She also had to resign from the school's board.

Ms. Kuper, who was also the owner, used school funds from 2007 to 2012 to pay for personal expenses, such as car lease payments and online counseling services that were reportedly psychic services.

In a settlement she reached with Mr. Schneiderman, Ms. Kuper will reimburse the school $240,000. Part of that--$20,000--will cover the cost of the attorney general's investigation. She won't be allowed to ever serve as the director or an officer of a not-for-profit organization in New York.

The pre-school is located at 1723 8th Avenue, at17th Street.

PROSPECT PARK CLOSED PART OF FRIDAY

We posted yesterday that "At approximately 1:00 p.m. today [Tuesday], a helicopter landing will be conducted in Prospect Park and on Randall's Island."

The reason: "Prospect Park will be closed on Friday, October 25 from 12 – 6pm due to security associated with the President's visit." [The message on that website changed on Thursday.]

President Obama is coming to Brooklyn on Friday to pay a visit to the unique Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in Crown Heights. This is the school he spoke admiringly about in this year's State of the Union address, where students graduate "with a high school diploma and an associate degree in computers or engineering."

EAT AN APPLE FOR NEW YORK

Mmmm, McIntosh

Crunch into an apple tomorrow at noon to help our city set the world record for "Most Participants In An Apple-Crunching Event."

New York City dreamed up the idea of the Big Apple Crunch in 2012 and scheduled it to fall on the second annual celebration of Food Day. About 400,000 New Yorkers bit into New York State apples last year. This year's goal? One million!

Find a Big Apple Crunch location online, or head over to P.S. 154 or P.S. 230.

GrowNYC and Food Day are the hosts of the Big Apple Crunch. Center for Science in the Public Interest founded Food Day in 2011, setting October 24th as the annual date. Food Day's focus is on healthy, affordable, sustainably-produced food.

The sponsor of Big Apple Crunch is the New York Apple Association.

By the way, the U.S. is the second-largest apple producer in the world (after China), and New York is the second-largest producer in the U.S. (after Washington).

KEY FOOD (WT) PLANNING TO OPEN IN 2014

Ryan Lynch, after meeting with Key Food representatives, has updated the community on the progress of the construction work at 589 Prospect Avenue (between 10th and 11th avenues). Ryan writes
  • Opening is now scheduled for Spring 2014. There was some serious sewage work that needed to be completed and has delayed all aspects of the project. Key Food expects to get the keys to their building in January. They have purchased all their equipment and have said they will fast track the opening;
  • The Key Food is likely to be around 500 sq. feet larger than anticipated which will allow for a sushi bar and wok station;
  • Prices at the Key Food are expected to about 6-7% cheaper than the previous store.
Prior to this report, the projected opening date was December 2013.

A blog post in February of this year (Walgreens/Key Food, Rendering of Their Future Home) stated the then-anticipated sizes of the two stores:
The building above will be home to both Walgreens and Key Food. Walgreens will occupy about two-thirds of the building and the supermarket about one-third. Walgreens plans to build an 800 square foot glass and plastic extension to accommodate Key Food.

Walgreens, Ryan adds, may be able to open a slight bit earlier than Key Food.

Keep hanging in, WT folks.

TOO MUCH DANGER, TOO MANY ACCIDENTS--WHAT WILL PROTECT US?

More and more people are publicly voicing their concern about road safety in Kensington and Windsor Terrace. Ngozi Agbim died under the wheels of a truck in June as she walked across Ocean Parkway at Church Avenue. That horror heightened our collective awareness about public safety and the long, tall, local and long-distance trucks that are a constant presence in this residential area.

People are also speaking up because of Troy Martin's son being struck by the driver of an electric bike in June. (Riding electric bikes in New York City is illegal.) He and his dad were walking across Caton at McDonald, maneuvering their way around 18-wheel trucks that blocked the crosswalk as they were walking to P.S. 230 for the start of the school day.

Additional people have mobilized to plead the case of Albemarle Road as a safety hazard after an ambulette with a patient inside was struck on Albemarle Road in May--by a driver who ran a stop sign at E. 4th. The car knocked the ambulette on its side, trapping the patient inside. Nearby residents have been reporting problems--especially speeding--for years, including a collision that involved seven vehicles.

A number of other, lower-profile incidents have gotten little publicity, but people have learned about them from their neighbors, either face-to-face or via social media.

If you're one of the people noticing the deterioration of safety in the street, on the sidewalk, in the subway, on the bus, or near cars and trucks, you belong at tonight's Transportation Assembly. The assembly is part of City Council District 39's participatory budgeting program. Everyone in the district is invited to attend. Your suggestions for projects that will be beneficial to any part of the district are welcome.

MEDITERRANEAN TASTES ON THE KWT BORDER

Mediterranean food made its debut on Fort Hamilton Parkway yesterday. Welcome to the neighborhood, Hummus Garden!

None of the dishes are made with meat. The majority are made without animal products, but some dishes have an egg or two (intact, not mixed with other ingredients) in them. One dessert (kanafe) is made with goat cheese. A fish special may occasionally be prepared.

Hummus Garden serves lunch and dinner. Eat in, take out, or have it catered for an occasion--or a non-occasion. The food is prepared fresh daily, and the baker is on the premises.

Kensington residents Avi and Julie Atiae own and operate Hummus Garden. They've decorated the restaurant with a Moroccan motif. Wooden tables and chairs are in the front and straight ahead, while the area on the right is filled with big, comfortable, cushioned seats, throw pillows, and drapes.

REVISED HOURS, AS OF SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26TH
  • Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Monday through Thursday: noon to 10:00 p.m.
  • Friday, winter hours: noon to 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Enjoy!
