RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE: CHIPPING SITES, DROP-OFF SITES, AND CURBSIDE PICKUP

Chipping Sites
Saturday, January 10th
Sunday, January 11th
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Christmas trees will be recycled into wood chips to nourish trees and plants on city streets and in city parks, ball fields, and community gardens at Mulchfest, the Department of Parks & Recreation's annual Christmas tree recycling event.

Before you bring your tree to a Mulchfest site, remove the stand, netting, tinsel, lights, and all other ornaments and decorations.

Bring it to any chipping location in the five boroughs on Saturday, January 10th, or Sunday, January 11th, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and get a bag of free mulch from your chipped tree to nourish your own trees or street trees.

Brooklyn has several chipping locations, including one in Windsor Terrace at Machate Circle/Park Circle at Parkside Avenue and Prospect Park Southwest and one in Park Slope at Prospect Park West and Third Street.

The chipping locations in all five boroughs are indicated by a green symbol (Chipping) on the Parks Department's website. Scroll down to the interactive map or to the borough-by-borough sites listed below the map. Not all of the sites offer a bag of free mulch.

Drop-off Sites
Friday, December 26th, through Sunday, January 11th

Some Parks Department's tree recycling locations won't have chipping equipment on-site; at those locations, you can drop your tree off. It'll get chipped sometime later.

Drop-off sites will accept Christmas trees every day during park hours from Friday, December 26th, through Sunday, January 11th. Prospect Park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Leave your tree along the Prospect Park perimeter fence near Prospect Park West and Third Street and at Park Circle.

Before you bring your tree to a drop-off site, remove the stand, netting, tinsel, lights, and all other ornaments and decorations.

A bag of mulch to take home won't be available at the drop-off sites.

Drop-off locations in all five boroughs are indicated by a white symbol (Drop-off only) on the Parks Department's website. Scroll down past the interactive map to see the borough-by-borough listings.

Curbside Collection
Year-round

Curbside collection by the Sanitation Department used to take place for several days in January. But now, real trees and wreaths that are placed at the curb are collected weekly on your recycling and compost day year-round.

Put them next to your other compostable materials. The trees will be turned into compost or renewable energy.

Before placing your tree at the curb, remove everything from it: lights, tinsel, stands, netting, and all other decorations and ornaments.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), which are potentially toxic to people and animals, are currently "widespread or lakewide" in Prospect Park Lake.

From the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation:

Visit NYHABS, DEC's harmful algal bloom notification map to view locations of freshwater HABs in New York State that were reported in the past week. Click on a dot for more information, including the date it was reported, the waterbody name, and pictures.

Click on the arrow at the bottom of the screen to view a list of reported HABs.

Instructions on how to use NYHABS are on DEC's HABs notification webpage.

Know it: HABs vary in appearance from scattered green dots in the water, to long, linear green streaks, pea soup, or spilled green paint, to blue-green or white coloration.

Avoid it: People, pets, and livestock should avoid contact with floating mats, scum, and discolored water.

Report it: Report a suspected HAB using the NYHABs online reporting form. Report health concerns related to HABs to the Department of Health at harmfulalgae@health.ny.gov, or contact your local health department.

TENNIS CENTER IN PROSPECT PARK COULD PERMANENTLY LOSE ACCESS TO SUNSHINE AND FRESH AIR

Petition to Stop Permanent BUBBLE-Prospect Park Tennis Courts

Hello neighbors,

There is something afoot at Prospect Park and the TENNIS CENTER that nobody seems to know about.

You've probably seen the two big white Bubbles over the tennis courts for the winter season.

The Prospect Park Alliance is now planning on covering both tennis courts with the big ugly white bubble YEAR ROUND! This would potentially start in October 2025.

The major issues are:

1. The emotional impact - most of us look forward to being outside in the sunshine and feeling connected to nature, the park and each other.

2. The aesthetic impact - it's a huge eyesore, it blocks the visual flow of the neighborhood, and blocks the Parade Grounds from the main park.

3. Environmental impact - they'll have to heat it in the winter and use air conditioning in the summer. This, at a time when the city is going to start fining co-ops and other buildings for not reducing their carbon footprint!

4. Concerns that this Public park will eventually become a private, for-pay tennis center that people are not going to be able to afford and enjoy.

For as long as I can remember, the tennis courts at Prospect Park have been a haven for tennis enthusiasts like myself. They have served as a vibrant community hub where players of all levels come together to enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty of Brooklyn, NY.

However, the Prospect Park Alliance is planning something that threatens our cherished outdoor experience—a permanent structure over the tennis courts.

Please sign this petition we’ve started on Change.org, Stop the Bubble Protest Page, or visit the page for more info.

We are hoping to have updates as we continue to communicate with the Alliance. We’ll share any new information on the sites on which we’ve currently posted and on the petition site itself.

Thanks for your support and kind regards,

Joey Douglas

PROSPECT PARK LAKE: HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS WERE REPORTED THIS WEEK

Photo                        Prospect Park Lake
Date of Observation  6/10/2024 11:19 AM
HAB Status  Confirmed
Reported by  NYC Parks
Extent  Widespread or Lakewide

See the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the New York State Department of Health (DOH) 2024 online New York Harmful Algal Bloom System (NYHABS) interactive map to see reports of HABs. Click OK to view the map.

Harmful Algal Blooms grow in Prospect Park Lake and other bodies of fresh water every year. DEC is asking the public and trained algal bloom samplers to electronically send reports of HABs with photos via a simple, mobile phone-friendly form

Once the reports are evaluated by DEC and DOH, they're posted on the NYHABS page to provide easy access to inform the public about HABs locations in New York.

Most algae blooms are harmless. However, exposure to toxins and other substances from certain HABs can make humans and other mammals, birds, and fish sick.

Avoid contact with all floating mats, scum, and discolored water.

Adults, children, dogs, and other animals should not go into the lake or near the shoreline

Anyone who has been in contact with a HAB should rinse thoroughly with soap and water--or with clean water alone, if that's all that's available at the moment.

Anyone who might have been exposed to a bloom and is experiencing any symptoms should get medical help immediately and should also contact the New York City Department of Health (DOH).

HABs have been monitored closely across New York State since 2012. In 2023, DEC’s Division of Water published an analysis of HABs titled “Detections of cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in New York State, United States (2012–2020).”

HABs present several management challenges, and that study and other research help advance the understanding of HABs to inform sound, scientifically driven, decision-making to protect public health and the environment.

When it comes to HABs, DEC encourages New Yorkers to:

  • Know It – HABs vary in appearance from scattered green dots in the water to long, linear green streaks, pea soup, or spilled green paint to blue-green or white coloration.
  • Avoid It – People, pets, and livestock should avoid contact with water that is discolored or has algal scums on the surface.
  • Report It –The public should report a suspected HAB through the NYHABs online reporting form available on DEC’s website. Report health concerns related to HABs to DOH at harmfulalgae@health.ny.gov, or contact your local health department.

For more information about HABs, visit DEC’s Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) webpage. You can download the HABs brochure and program guide, which includes information and links to resources regarding bloom prevention, management, and control.
