BIKE LANE PROPOSED FOR 36TH STREET/37TH STREET SIDE OF GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY

Update, July 27, 2026: Green-Wood Cemetery announced today that it has received $4 million from the New York City Council to fund community outreach and design.

Green-Wood Cemetery has proposed installing a two-way protected bike lane* on the 36th Street/37th Street side (the southern side) of the cemetery, as shown in Green-Wood's rendering above. 

 

Green-Wood has also proposed an entrance to the cemetery at 9th Avenue and 37th Street. A 1901 map of the cemetery from the David Rumsey Map Collection shows an entrance that used to be at that location (the "Southern Entrance").

What is a protected bike lane?

Protected bike lanes, unlike paint-only bike lanes, provide physical protection between people riding bikes and vehicle traffic. In New York City, there are three main types of protected bike lanes.

 

Jersey barriers

Jersey barriers use concrete to provide separation between vehicles and people using the bike lane.

 

Parking-protected

Parking-protected bike lanes use a lane of parking to separate people using the bike lane from vehicle traffic.

 

Flexible delineators

DOT also uses flexible delineator, a.k.a. flexi-posts, to provide physical separation between bike riders and vehicle traffic. In late 2021, DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez promised to upgrade half of these barriers with sturdier materials, such as concrete.

 

An article in Streetsblog, "Green-Wood Cemetery Wants Protected Bike Lane, New Sunset Park Entrance," describes the area as

a "no man’s land" strip of tractor-trailer parking and illegal dumping. 

Green-Wood's proposal

would swap an underused curbside parking lane on 36th Street and 37th Street for a two-way bikeway and expanded sidewalks.

 

On Fort Hamilton Parkway, [Green-Wood President Meera] Joshi and company proposed splitting an existing sidewalk into a bike lane and pedestrian path with planters and benches to be maintained by cemetery staff.

Green-Wood has asked the city to contribute about 20% of the total cost.

BURIAL RECORDS FOR GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY ARE ONLINE AND COMPLETELY SEARCHABLE FOR FREE

 

Detailed burial records for the more than 426,000 people who were interred in Green-Wood Cemetery between 1840 and 1937 are remotely searchable for free through the cemetery's new Burial and Vital Records database.

The records contain interment date, name, burial location (lot number and grave number), place of birth (city and state or country), age at death (in years, months, and days), whether married or single, last place of residence (city, state,street address), place of death (city, state), date of death, cause of death, name of the undertaker, and remarks (if any).

 

The public can search the database by name, lot, place of birth, cause of death, undertaker, etc. The Search Guide provides instructions for various search methods and for refining a search to come up with more focused results.

 

Information in the database is from Green-Wood's Burial Registry of sixty handwritten chronologically-arranged ledgers. To search basic information on interments for other years, use Green-Wood's Burial Search. More than 570,000 people are buried in the cemetery.

A proposal for a new Education and Welcome Center for Green-Wood Cemetery will be discussed at a public hearing on Tuesday, September 14th, at 6:00 p.m. Brooklyn Community Board 7 will host the hearing on Zoom. 

 

Following the hearing, the Land Use/Landmarks Committee will meet to discuss the proposal.

The proposed Center would surround two sides of the restored historic Weir Greenhouse (renamed the McGovern-Weir Greenhouse in 1971, when the Weir family sold it to the McGovern family). It's located on the southwest corner of 5th Avenue and 25th Street, across the street from Green-Wood's main entrance. 

 

Built in 1895, the greenhouse is the only surviving Victorian commercial greenhouse in New York City. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission landmarked it in 1982. It was added to the United States government's National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Project Description

A new Education and Welcome Center will strengthen the visitors’ experience of Green-Wood Cemetery as a cultural institution for art, history, and nature. The new building is L-shaped, surrounding two sides of the restored historic greenhouse with expansive views towards the Cemetery and the Richard Upjohn Arches.

 

The building houses exhibition galleries, a classroom, a multipurpose space within the greenhouse, and offices on the second floor. Its massing is organized by a one-story volume that faces 5th Avenue and relates to the existing greenhouse and a two-story volume along the west end of the building site, introducing an entry courtyard that opens onto 25th Street.

 

The façade is comprised of an aluminum curtain wall screened by glazed terra cotta baguettes and a glazed terra cotta rainscreen that covers the solid areas of the building as well as the adjacent party wall that abuts 5th Avenue.
