LearnWear NYC will be collecting used books and clothes at the 15th Street entrance to Prospect Park on Saturday, December 6th, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. All donations will be given to those in need.

LearnWear is an organization started by Brooklynite college students with a mission of providing clothes and books to the homeless population of NYC. Our mission is to keep the city warm and protected while fostering opportunities for education. Through organizing drives, we strive to make a meaningful impact.

FAMILIES AT THE HOMELESS SHELTER IN KENSINGTON NEED A FEW ITEMS

A note to residents about The Kensington family shelter:

Hello neighbors,

Hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected in this challenging time. We have checked with the Kensington shelter staff, and they are not accepting donations at this time except for these three things:

1. Pull-up diapers size 6/7

2. Baby wipes

3. Small new or lightly used pots and pans -- quart-size only since these will be used on small stoves that are more akin to a hot plate.

These can be dropped off or shipped to the shelter attention Uniquia Parker. The address is 385 McDonald Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11218.

Please do not bring any other donations by the shelter; they will not accept them. We will keep checking back and will let you know when the situation changes.

Bring your donations into the shelter through the main entrance between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Tracy and Catherine are neighborhood residents who began volunteering five years ago as liaisons between the shelter and the Kensington and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods.

Periodically throughout the year, Catherine and Tracy send e-mail to neighborhood residents with information about what the families need. Sometimes it's clothing, sometimes it's personal care products, sometimes it's holiday gifts, and sometimes, when we aren't social distancing, it's participation at parties or other events.

FREE SCREENING OF DOCUMENTARY ABOUT TEEN HOMELESSNESS

Screening of The Homestretch

Sunday, June 2nd, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A free screening of The Homestretch, a documentary film that follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future, will take place at The Church of the Holy Apostles on Sunday, June 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. 

Through haunting images, intimate scenes, and first-person narratives, these teens take the audience on their journeys of struggle and triumph. As their stories unfold, the film connects viewers deeply with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights. The film provides a powerful, original perspective on what it means to be young, homeless, and building a future in America today.
 

A discussion with the filmmaker (and parishioner) Kirsten Kelly will follow the screening.

The Homestretch has not been rated. It runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
