LEGO CAMP DURING PRESIDENTS' WEEK

Presidents' Week Lego Camp

Eleanor Rodgers will offer Lego Camp during Presidents' Week from Tuesday, February 19th, through Friday, February 22nd, at The Church of the Holy Apostles, 612 Greenwood Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and E. 7th Street, in Windsor Terrace.

Register your child for any day (or days) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extended hours will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (see below).

For the first two hours of the day, kids will work in teams to build large-scale projects, followed by a break for lunch and a run-around at Greenwood Playground (weather permitting). The last hour will be spent adding smaller details to the scenes and pulling them all together to create one giant scene to photograph and show to parents at pick-up.

From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., kids can help destroy the creation and sort and pack the Lego, hang out and play, or build their own smaller Lego project.

The camp will be loosely based around the story of The Lego Movie 2.

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, kids will build a classic Lego city using a mixture of building from instructions with Lego sets and designing their own buildings. This will be Bricksburg, the city Emmet lives in in The Lego Movie (1). 

On Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign your child up to go to Eleanor's apartment after camp (Albemarle Road and E 5th Street) to watch The Lego Movie (1). 

On Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., register your child for a group trip to the Nitehawk Theater to see The Lego Movie 2. Or you can pick them up at 3:00 p.m. and join the group at the theater.

On Thursday and Friday, the morning will be spent building scenes from Lego Movie 2: Apocalypseburg and planets and characters from the Sistar system.

On Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sign up your child to watch a movie at Eleanor's apartment (either Lego Batman or Lego Ninjago).

On Friday, camp will end at 3:00 p.m. with no extra hours.

LEGO AT LARK: JAPANESE GARDEN AND MINECRAFT

Lego at Lark: Japanese Garden and Minecraft

Saturdays, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Drop-off Lego classes at Lark are back, taught again by Eleanor Rodgers. The classes are for kids aged 4 to 8, and the number of spaces for 4-year-olds is limited. 

Japanese Garden

(loosely based on Brooklyn Botanical Garden)

Saturdays, April 9th and 16th, noon to 1:30 p.m.

The building project will include a cherry blossom tree esplanade, a pagoda, a zen rock garden, a tori (ceremonial archway), and a lake with turtles, stepping stones, and ornamental arched bridges.

Lego Minecraft
Saturdays, May 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, noon to 1:30 p.m.

The class starts in the forest biome where Steve (or Alex) starts out to explore the Minecraft world. Along the way, s/he’ll build their own house, encounter animals (building the wolves, sheep, pigs, chickens and cows) and other MOBs (villager, creeper, spider), go mining (building a mine, minecart, and tracks), and teleport through portals to the nether.

If most of the above doesn’t make sense to you because your Lego-lover doesn’t play Minecraft, don’t worry--it’s still a fun class for those with only a passing familiarity with Minecraft. In essence, we build a forest, houses, farms, a mine, and a big underground cave full of lava.

HALLOWEEN-THEMED LEGO CLASS

Lego Class

Saturday, October 31st, 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Children ages 4 and up will create spooky, Halloween-appropriate Lego scenes, using Lego spider webs, cauldrons, wands, witches' hats, broomsticks, rats, snakes, and frogs. Each child will take home one build at the end of the class.

LEGO MASTERBUILDER CLASS FOR KIDS

                               Lego Masterbuilder Class
                              Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to noon
                    September 27th through December 20th

This fall, Eleanor Rogers' "Kensintonlegoclass" will run two  regular Lego classes: the Sunday "Masterbuilder" class and a Monday after-school class for kindergartners and 1st graders at P.S. 130 as part of the Wingspan Arts program. Classes at Lark Cafe will likely restart in late October.

The Sunday class will meet in Eleanor's apartment on Albemarle Road at E. 5th Street from 10:30 a.m. to noon. She's targeting it for 2nd and 3rd graders--and possibly younger or older students, if the class is a good fit for them. The class will start on September 27th and continue every Sunday through December 20th, with the exception of November 29th (Thanksgiving weekend).

The cost for the full 12 classes is $220. It's also possible to sign up for a smaller number of classes, based on their availability.

The themes will be Pirates, Wizard's Tower, and Outer Space. The class will build large detailed sailing ships, islands, towers, foreboding gateways, bone cages, moonlanders, Mars rovers, alien spaceships, planets, and more.

General description of the classes
One of the joys of Lego is that everyone plays with it differently. In these classes, Eleanor will incorporate what she sees as the three main areas of Lego play: structured building (following preset instructions), free building, and imaginative play.

The classes have a free-flowing structure that allows the kids to lead the direction of the project as it continues. Builds will be kept and developed from week to week. At the end of each theme, the students will take some smaller builds home with them.

LEGO AT LARK

Winter Saturday Lego at Lark

Saturdays, January 10th through February 7th, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Lego instructor extraordinaire and Kensington neighbor Eleanor Rodgers informs us that she'll begin her winter Lego classes in just a few days. Eleanor has designed each Lego at Lark class to stand alone, but she will introduce themes that can also connect the classes.

Register now for either or both of these themes:

     Police/Batman theme (three weeks)

January 10th: Police and Thieves. Build a police station, jail cells, police cars, and a safe for the robbers to break into.

January 17th: Batman Begins. Build the batlair, with computer array, a hi-tech cell, and the Batmobile.

January 24th: The Iceman Cometh. Every hero needs a nemesis; in this class, Batman (equipped with batflyer) battles Mr freeze and his ice ray.

     Pirate/Underwater Adventure theme (two weeks)

January 31st: Pirates. Build pirate ships and desert islands. Can the pirates find the treasure before their ship is attacked by creatures from the deep?

February 7th: Underwater Adventure. The pirates are replaced by deep sea divers and their submarine fending off stingrays, sharks, and octopi in a bid to find sunken treasure.

If any spaces remain available in a class, registration for drop-ins will open the week of the class.

Classes are tailored to children who are ages 4 through 8.

The cost per class is $20.00. A 10% discount is offered to those who sign up for either theme. A 15% discount is given to those who sign up for both themes (all five weeks). A sibling discount is also available.
