Prospect Park Alliance Brings Lark to the Parade Ground Flatbush favorite Lark Cafe opens seasonal cafe at the Parade Ground starting July 28 BROOKLYN, July 13, 2023 – Prospect Park Alliance, the non-profit that sustains Brooklyn's Backyard, has announced that the popular Flatbush eatery Lark Cafe will be opening a new seasonal location at the Prospect Park Parade Ground Snack Bar. This location, called Lark by the Park, will be open beginning on July 28.    Lark by the Park will offer a menu of mouthwatering options including pizza, smash burgers, breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, milkshakes, hot dogs and more. The cafe will be open throughout the summer and fall months. P.S. 130 PTA TO HOLD 6TH ANNUAL ART AUCTION; BIDDING IS LIVE

P.S. 130 PTA to Hold 6th Annual Art Auction on 11/17 | Bidding Is Live

The P.S. 130 PTA is holding its 6th Annual Art Auction on Saturday, November 17th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Lark Cafe, located at 1007 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, between E. 10th Street and Stratford Road (map).

Bidding is open to the public and will be entirely online at tinyurl.com/130artauction2018, beginning today, November 12th, at 9:00 a.m. Bidding will end promptly at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th.

All proceeds will benefit the P.S. 130 PTA, a Title I school in Brooklyn serving over 800 students.

The auction will feature great deals on more than eighty works of art donated by a range of local and nationally-recognized artists, including
  

• Hiroshi Sugimoto, a contemporary Japanese photographer whose esoteric practice explores memory and time, 
• William Mortensen, the last of the great pictorialist photographers, recently with retrospectives in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, 
• Julie Peppito, recipient of the 2001 New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship for sculpture, 
• Scott Teplin, whose work is included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art (New York City and San Francisco), The New Museum, The Walker Art Center, and The New York Public Library, and 
• Harvey Wang, who has exhibited widely at museums, including the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the New York Historical Society, and the Museum of the City of New York. 

There is a suggested $10 donation at the door. Drinks and snacks will be served thanks to event sponsors Wine & Spirits, Le Paddock, Butterfunk Kitchen, and the Windsor Terrace Food Coop.

PAID FAMILY LEAVE WORKSHOP; THE LAW HAS GONE INTO EFFECT

Paid Family Leave Workshop

Sunday, January 14th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The law firm Crumiller P.C. and the Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) will hold a free workshop for the public on negotiating paid maternity and paternity leave. The workshop will focus on New York's new Paid Family Leave law, which went into effect on January 1, 2018.

Caroline Piela, a pregnancy discrimination attorney, will lead the workshop at Lark Cafe on Sunday, January 14th, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Most employees who work in New York State for private employers are eligible for paid family leave. Public employees are eligible if their employers choose to offer it.

The Paid Family Leave law provides job-protected, paid time off so that employees can, among other life situations, bond with a newly-born, adopted, or fostered child.

Topics to be discussed at the workshop include your rights under state, city, and federal law; strategies for your particular office environment (hierarchies and politics); and New York’s new paid family leave legislation.

Brooklyn, NY – The P.S. 130 PTA is holding its 5^th Annual Art Auction on Saturday, November 18, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at Lark located at 1007 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. 

Bidding is open to the public and will be entirely online at: tinyurl.com/130artauction2017 beginning November 11, 2017 at 9:00am. Bidding will end promptly at 9:00pm on November 18. All proceeds will benefit the P.S. 130 PTA, a Title I school in Brooklyn serving over 800 students.

The auction will feature more than 80 works of art donated by a range of local and nationally recognized artists, including:

•  Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh, who contributed original vocal and narrative composition to the video essay Grosse Fatigue, created in collaboration with artist Camille Henrot, which was a recipient of the 55th Venice Biennale’s Silver Lion award and has since exhibited at The New Museum, The Guggenheim and The Museum of Modern Art;
• Julie Peppito, recipient of the 2001 New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship for sculpture;

Original works of art by local artists will be auctioned at Lark Cafe at P.S. 130's 5th Annual Art Auction. A few of this year's items are shown in the poster above.

The types of art auctioned may include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, collage, ceramics, woodworking, craft, and textile design.

All bidding will be done online for a week prior to the auction, going live on Saturday, November 11th. 

The auction will provide critical funding for the Title I school's arts enrichment, including art supplies for art projects in every classroom across all grades and the popular Art Box program for grades K-2.

The suggested donation for admission to the auction is $10 at the door. Drinks and snacks will be served. DJ Ayres of The Rub will provide music.

If you need a babysitter while you're at the auction, sign up at Alden Moves. Alden Moves is just two blocks away from Lark Cafe.

On behalf of P.S. 130, Alden Moves has reduced the cost of their PJ Party for a limited time. The P.S. 130 courtesy rate of $23.00 is available until Tuesday, November 14th.

After that, the rate will be $35.00. Registration for the PJ Party will close on Friday, November 17th, at 6:00 p.m.

The evening at Alden Moves will include pizza, games, crafts, dancing, movies, and karaoke.

AUCTION OF ART BY LOCAL AND NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED ARTISTS

Local artists and the P.S. 130 community will join together for the fourth year in a row at the P.S. 130 PTA's Fall Art Auction.

Thanks to generous donations by fifty local and nationally-recognized artists from all disciplines, this one-night event will raise money to supply art materials for all of P.S. 130's classrooms.

The art auction is one of the school's biggest fund raising events. Last year, seventy pieces of art were donated, raising more than $10,000.

Bidding will be done online only, starting tomorrow, November 14th.

The event will take place on Friday, November 18th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Lark Cafe. The suggested donation at the door for admission is $10.

LEGO AT LARK: JAPANESE GARDEN AND MINECRAFT

Lego at Lark: Japanese Garden and Minecraft

Saturdays, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Drop-off Lego classes at Lark are back, taught again by Eleanor Rodgers. The classes are for kids aged 4 to 8, and the number of spaces for 4-year-olds is limited. 

Japanese Garden

(loosely based on Brooklyn Botanical Garden)

Saturdays, April 9th and 16th, noon to 1:30 p.m.

The building project will include a cherry blossom tree esplanade, a pagoda, a zen rock garden, a tori (ceremonial archway), and a lake with turtles, stepping stones, and ornamental arched bridges.

Lego Minecraft
Saturdays, May 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, noon to 1:30 p.m.

The class starts in the forest biome where Steve (or Alex) starts out to explore the Minecraft world. Along the way, s/he’ll build their own house, encounter animals (building the wolves, sheep, pigs, chickens and cows) and other MOBs (villager, creeper, spider), go mining (building a mine, minecart, and tracks), and teleport through portals to the nether.

If most of the above doesn’t make sense to you because your Lego-lover doesn’t play Minecraft, don’t worry--it’s still a fun class for those with only a passing familiarity with Minecraft. In essence, we build a forest, houses, farms, a mine, and a big underground cave full of lava.

HALLOWEEN-THEMED LEGO CLASS

Lego Class

Saturday, October 31st, 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Children ages 4 and up will create spooky, Halloween-appropriate Lego scenes, using Lego spider webs, cauldrons, wands, witches' hats, broomsticks, rats, snakes, and frogs. Each child will take home one build at the end of the class.

LEGO MASTERBUILDER CLASS FOR KIDS

                               Lego Masterbuilder Class
                              Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to noon
                    September 27th through December 20th

This fall, Eleanor Rogers' "Kensintonlegoclass" will run two  regular Lego classes: the Sunday "Masterbuilder" class and a Monday after-school class for kindergartners and 1st graders at P.S. 130 as part of the Wingspan Arts program. Classes at Lark Cafe will likely restart in late October.

The Sunday class will meet in Eleanor's apartment on Albemarle Road at E. 5th Street from 10:30 a.m. to noon. She's targeting it for 2nd and 3rd graders--and possibly younger or older students, if the class is a good fit for them. The class will start on September 27th and continue every Sunday through December 20th, with the exception of November 29th (Thanksgiving weekend).

The cost for the full 12 classes is $220. It's also possible to sign up for a smaller number of classes, based on their availability.

The themes will be Pirates, Wizard's Tower, and Outer Space. The class will build large detailed sailing ships, islands, towers, foreboding gateways, bone cages, moonlanders, Mars rovers, alien spaceships, planets, and more.

General description of the classes
One of the joys of Lego is that everyone plays with it differently. In these classes, Eleanor will incorporate what she sees as the three main areas of Lego play: structured building (following preset instructions), free building, and imaginative play.

The classes have a free-flowing structure that allows the kids to lead the direction of the project as it continues. Builds will be kept and developed from week to week. At the end of each theme, the students will take some smaller builds home with them.

Winter Saturday Lego at Lark

Saturdays, January 10th through February 7th, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Lego instructor extraordinaire and Kensington neighbor Eleanor Rodgers informs us that she'll begin her winter Lego classes in just a few days. Eleanor has designed each Lego at Lark class to stand alone, but she will introduce themes that can also connect the classes.

     Police/Batman theme (three weeks)

January 10th: Police and Thieves. Build a police station, jail cells, police cars, and a safe for the robbers to break into.

January 17th: Batman Begins. Build the batlair, with computer array, a hi-tech cell, and the Batmobile.

January 24th: The Iceman Cometh. Every hero needs a nemesis; in this class, Batman (equipped with batflyer) battles Mr freeze and his ice ray.

     Pirate/Underwater Adventure theme (two weeks)

January 31st: Pirates. Build pirate ships and desert islands. Can the pirates find the treasure before their ship is attacked by creatures from the deep?

February 7th: Underwater Adventure. The pirates are replaced by deep sea divers and their submarine fending off stingrays, sharks, and octopi in a bid to find sunken treasure.

If any spaces remain available in a class, registration for drop-ins will open the week of the class.

Classes are tailored to children who are ages 4 through 8.

The cost per class is $20.00. A 10% discount is offered to those who sign up for either theme. A 15% discount is given to those who sign up for both themes (all five weeks). A sibling discount is also available.
