KENSINGTON DOG RUN FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (FREE)

Celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Kensington Dog Run on Saturday, August 9th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Food and drinks will be served. Or bring your favorite refreshments, if you like.

Located on Coney Island Avenue in the Parade Ground near Prospect Park, the Kensington Dog Run opened in 2020. It came to fruition after years of grassroots planning and organizing by neighborhood dog owners who wanted to create a dog run where dogs could enjoy the benefits of exercising, socializing, and breathing fresh air off-leash.

The project was made possible with allocated funds via Participatory Budgeting from New York City Councilmember Mathieu Eugene of District 40 and via Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' capital allocations. The balance of the funds needed were covered by Councilmember Brad Lander of District 39.

DOGS RUN FREE AT THE NEWLY-OPENED KENSINGTON DOG RUN

The Kensington Dog Run had its grand opening in Prospect Park Parade Ground on Monday, July 6th. The dog run is open seven days a week from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Within the 7,000 square feet of fenced-in space are separated areas for large dogs and small dogs, canine-friendly turf, benches made from reclaimed wood, water fountains, new trees, dog-waste-resistant shrubs, and
waste receptacles.

Grassroots planning and organizing by neighborhood residents brought the idea of a dog run to fruition. In 2014, dog owners started talking with each other about creating a nearby dog run where dogs could enjoy the benefits  of exercising, socializing, and breathing fresh air off-leash. First they talked as individuals, then they met as a group, and then they formed the Kensington Dog Run Association and became a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization.

They raised awareness in the neighborhood about their goal, they petitioned Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, and they rallied the support of local leaders. They collaborated with the Parks Department and the Prospect Park Alliance, they continued building community support, and they searched for and secured funding. Finally, construction began in June 2019, and the groundbreaking ceremony took place the following month.

The cost is covered by Participatory Budgeting funds from City Councilmember Mathieu Eugene of District 40 and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' capital allocations, with the balance coming from City Councilmember Brad Lander of District 39.

"The Kensington Dog Run is the result of several years of advocacy by our neighbors,” said Salvatore Garro, President, Kensington Dog Run Association. “The Kensington Dog Run Association banded together over our shared love of dogs and community. We engaged with our leaders and proudly campaigned for our four-legged friends who needed a place to play, exercise, and have fun. We are truly impressed by the beautifully executed design by Prospect Park Alliance, and we are forever grateful for the funding provided by our Council Members through the Participatory Budgeting process, as well as the Brooklyn Borough President. This park encapsulates community and will forever be an example of what civic engagement can achieve."

DOG RUN GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR JULY 29TH

                  Kensington Dog Run Groundbreaking Ceremony
                    Monday, July 29th, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The anticipated date of completion for the Kensington Dog Run at the Prospect Park Parade Ground is summer 2020. Construction began in June.

Join the members of the Kensington Dog Run Association for the groundbreaking ceremony at the Prospect Park Parade Ground on Coney Island Avenue at Kermit Place (map), on Monday, July 29th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The enclosed dog run is an example of a successful grassroots effort. A few years ago, dog owners in the neighborhood started talking with each other about wanting a nearby dog run, so neighborhood dogs could reap the rewards of exercising, socializing, and breathing fresh air.

They talked as individuals, they met as a group, they formed the Kensington Dog Run Association, they became a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, they collaborated with the Parks Department and the Prospect Park Alliance, they built community support, and they searched for and secured funding.

The cost of the dog run is being covered by Participatory Budgeting funds from Councilmember Mathieu Eugene of District 40 and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' capital allocations, with the balance coming from Councilmember Brad Lander of District 39.

PARADE GROUND RENOVATIONS WILL INCLUDE ADULT FITNESS AREA

Prospect Park Alliance--the non-profit organization that sustains the Park--reports that through the support of New York City Councilmember Mathieu Eugene, it is undertaking a $750,000 renovation of the Prospect Park Parade Ground to
  • construct an adult fitness area,
  • add a cooling misting line along the heavily-used soccer fields,
  • fix drainage problems at Field 7,
  • reconstruct the volleyball court, and
  • add shade trees and new seating.

The adult fitness area will contain twelve types of fitness equipment, including accessible equipment, an open area for group classes, and custom concrete "step-up" blocks.

The misting line will be installed along Fields 10 and 11. Set on timers, it will provide a cooling screen of mist when the artificial turf fields are at their busiest and hottest. No water will collect on the ground--the mist will evaporate to cool the air.

The projected completion date is March 2019.

On Friday, April 13th, at 10:30 a.m., join the celebration of the start of construction as ground is broken at Prospect Park Parade Ground. Enter at Parade Place.

WHERE DOGS CAN RUN FREELY

These drawings, newly created by the Landscape Architecture and Design team of the Prospect Park Alliance, illustrate what the Kensington Dog Run will look like when it opens at the Parade Ground.

In this fenced-in area on Coney Island Avenue at Kermit Place, dogs will be allowed off-leash during the day, supplementing the areas of Prospect Park where dogs are allowed off-leash only early in the morning and late at night.

Bids for construction will begin fairly soon, a contractor will be selected, and work will begin. The project will take about two years, if everything goes according to plan.

Before any of that can happen, the design has to be presented at upcoming community board meetings for the boards' approval. When the Kensington Dog Run Association members find out the dates and locations of the meetings, they'll announce them.

The project is a grassroots effort. It's been able to reach this point because a few years ago, dog owners in the neighborhood started talking with each other about their desire for a nearby dog run.

They chatted individually, they met as a group, they formed the Kensington Dog Run Association, they became a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, they collaborated with the Parks Department and the Prospect Park Alliance, they built community support, and they searched for and secured funding.

The cost of the dog run is fully covered, thanks to Participatory Budgeting funds from Councilmember Mathieu Eugene of District 40 and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' capital allocations, with the balance coming from Councilmember Brad Lander of District 39.
