BIKERS AND WALKERS: ANSWER A SURVEY ABOUT THE CITY'S PLAN TO EXPAND THE GREATER GREENWAY NETWORK

New York City is home to North America’s oldest greenway, Brooklyn's own Ocean Parkway. It's also the home of the nation's oldest bike path, opened in 1894.

Several New York City agencies are currently working together to enhance and expand the 506-mile greenway network, with the goal of providing high-quality, continuous biking and walking facilities in all five boroughs.

The Greater Greenways Long-Term Expansion Plan is a citywide initiative that the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation are leading.

A 90-page PDF of the full plan is available at https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/greater-greenways.pdf. It is presented in two chapters: "Greenways of Today" and "Greenways of Tomorrow." 

What is meant by "greenways": continuous, multi-use corridors designed for human-powered and electric-assist transportation and recreation.

Defined and named through community-driven planning, greenways often follow natural or man-made linear spaces such as railways, highways, rivers, waterfronts, and parkland.

A survey and interactive map support this expansion plan. You can provide feedback by participating in the five-minute survey about the design of future greenways across New York City. The survey closes on Monday, March 2nd, at 5:00 p.m.

The Fido Calendar is a tribute to the large and diverse Fido community. Fido members can, for a minimal fee, have their dog’s picture in a calendar, and enjoy the memories of other dogs and events in the Park.

How to get your dog’s picture in the calendar:

• Become a Fido member [suggested minimum donation: $10 per year]

• Have your dog’s picture taken at a Coffee Bark or picture-taking event

• Cost: $10 small; $20 medium; $40 large

• Get a free calendar for every picture placed in the calendar

Alternately, pay online and send a photo, stating the date for the picture, size of the picture, name of your dog, and your contact information. Send information to fidobrooklyn@gmail.com.

The FIDO 2024 calendar, themed "Dogs and Their Owners," features photos taken in Prospect Park. The calendar will be available at the Saturday, January 6th Coffee Bark, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and on Sunday, January 7th, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

 

The FIDO calendar will sell for $8, 2 for $15, and 3 for $20.

TWO DAYS WITHOUT ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING

 Alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Thursday, April 29th, and Friday, April 30th, for Holy Thursday (Orthodox) and Good Friday (Orthodox).

All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will remain in effect.

Parking meter regulations are only suspended on these major legal holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

 

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENSION FOR PASSOVER

 

Alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Sunday, March 28th, and Monday, March 29th, for the first two days of Passover.

All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will remain in effect.

GREEN-WOOD’S ICONIC ARCH TO BE ILLUMINATED IN AMBER LIGHT TO HONOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES TO COVID-19

 

To honor the lives of the more than 500,000 American souls who lost their lives to COVID-19, The Green-Wood Cemetery has joined with other cultural institutions around the country and illuminated its landmarked Gothic Arch in amber light.

Richard J. Moylan, President of Green-Wood, said, “This has been a year marked by unspeakable sorrow and loss. At Green-Wood, we shared in the grief of too many families who lost loved ones to this insidious disease. But we were also inspired by the bravery, fortitude, and goodness of so many who put their lives at risk in order to keep our City moving forward. It is this indomitable spirit that will get us through this crisis stronger than ever. I have never been prouder to be a New Yorker.”   

Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architects Richard Upjohn and his son, Richard M., and built between 1861 until 1863, Green-Wood’s Arch marks the Cemetery’s Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue.

 

The Arch will be bathed in amber light until April 11, 2021.

Dear customers, friends, and neighbors…

It is with true sadness that I must suddenly sell the cafe at this time. Operating a community cafe had been a childhood dream and I was so lucky to be able to see that dream come into fruition. We lived in Brooklyn for over 20 years before I found this great location just 2 years ago… And even then, Church Avenue was still considered "up and coming", now it's a destination place.

This has been one of the most gratifying jobs I've ever taken on (second only to raising my 3 sons.) Some of our customers have been here for several generations and we have built something really incredible together. We have welcomed the new generations of young families coming into the neighborhood and we’ve become a true community space where all people are welcome and come together to share meals & stories, to work and to relax.

We've been a part of some of your life's most precious celebrations with birthday parties, baby showers, and even a couple of weddings! We’ve been a home away from home for crafters and makers and artists and writers and the meetings we have held to raise awareness for local politics and peaceful & creative activism has been something that I will personally continue even once I've left the cafe.

The business itself has grown organically so we have really loyal and kind customers... I will miss seeing you everyday but I am not moving from the neighborhood so I hope to see you all around!

If you have ever been interested in owning your own restaurant/cafe, this is really a great spot and it is only getting better. My landlord is the absolute best you'll ever find and he and I have an incredible relationship. The rent is still low and has a long lease life.

It's a great opportunity for someone who wants to "give it a go" or expand their existing business.

I took care of the hard part, by transforming a derelict and abandoned restaurant into the gorgeous space that it is now by laying down real hardwood floors, creating a beautiful garden for customers, and a fully equipped kitchen and cafe counter.

The location is sublime, we are so close to the parade grounds and Prospect Park and all the new schools on CIA… We have a lovely online community that we deliver to, as well as loads of walk by traffic which is ever increasing, day by day.

I’ve been approved by the SLA for a B&W and our coffee and tea service is one of the best. Our kitchen created amazing food, I know I'm going to miss our soups and waffles.

You can decide to keep the name and social media accounts or come up with something new. It’s all set up and waiting for you to walk in to start your own dream from day one.
