SIXTH DAY ADDED BACK TO SOME BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY BRANCHES

The Kensington, Windsor Terrace, Cortelyou, and Flatbush branches of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) are among the sixteen that are now open five days a week but will be open an additional day as of Saturday, September 10th. This brings the total number of six-day branches to thirty out of BPL's fifty-eight branches.

The extra day is made possible by ending the practice of having librarians arrive at their jobs hours before their branches open for the day in order to do administrative work. Automation has freed librarians from a lot of this work, so it's no longer necessary for them to report to work before the opening time. Instead, their work hours will coincide with their branches' open hours.

BPL is the nation’s fifth largest library system, with a circulation that rose to an all-time high of over 20 million items last year. More than 841,000 patrons attended free library programs, earning BPL the number one ranking in program attendance in North America by the American Library Association.
