PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE

Hurricane Irene is currently a category 3 hurricane (winds 111 to 130 miles per hour).

The brochure "Ready New York: Hurricanes and New York City" is available online in several languages. It explains to those who live in a hurricane evacuation zone what they need to do in advance.

To find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone and where the evacuation centers are located, type your address into the Office of Emergency Management's Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder and/or check their map. If you don't live in a hurricane evacuation zone, you don't face a risk of storm surge flooding from a hurricane.

If you live in a high-rise building, take shelter below the 10th floor to avoid dangerous winds.

Watch out for falling trees and branches and flying objects that don't normally fly.
