If you live near Caton Avenue and E. 7th Street, you'll want to go to a meeting later today (Tuesday, August 14th, 6:30 p.m.) with the School Construction Authority. The topic is what the School Construction Authority plans to do to minimize the effect that construction will have on you and your neighbors while a public school is being built on the vacant lot. Construction will continue through sometime in 2015.

Hosted by neighborhood artist Bernette Rudolph for Windsor Terrace and Park Slope artists. Meet and mingle with your fellow GO artists. Ask questions about GO. Share ideas about preparing your studio and about helping to publicize the event.

Fourteen Windsor Terrace artists will open their studios for tours on the weekend of September 8th and 9th, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Community residents are invited to register as voters and visit as many studios as they want to.

After visiting a minimum of five studios, each registered voter can nominate the three artists that she or he thinks should be included in a group exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum that will be opening on December 1st. You, the community, are the curator of this open studio project.

COW WANTS TO JOIN CIRCUS!

The Swedish Marionette Theater, a traveling puppet show, will perform "Bessie's Big Shot" at Greenwood Playground this Wednesday. A cow named Bessie would love to join the circus, but what can she offer as her act?

The show is best for children ages two through eight. But children and adults of all ages will enjoy watching Bessie try out various occupations until she finds the one she's good at.

This and all other Friends of Greenwood Playground events are free.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENSIONS FOR THIS WEEK AND NEXT WEEK

Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Wednesday, August 15th, for Feast of the Assumption. All other regulations, including those for parking meters, will  remain in effect.

Alternate side parking regulations will also be suspended on Sunday, August 19th, Monday, August 20th, and Tuesday, August 21st, for Idul-Fitr, with all other regulations, including those for parking meters, still in effect.

A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR KENSINGTON ARTISTS' STUDIOS

The Brooklyn Museum is holding a community-curated open studio project named GO. Neighborhood artists will open their studios to their communities on the weekend of September 8th and 9th; on those two days, community members who register as voters will visit the studios and will then nominate the three artists who they think should be included in an exhibit at the museum. The exhibit will open on December 1st.

The project coordinator for Kensington is Renee McGarry (renee @ gobrooklynart.org). She has registered seven Kensington artists. Click here to see a thumbnail for each artist. Click on the thumbnail to see their work and read their artist statement.

Artists, voters, and volunteers will mingle at a meet-up at The Castello Plan at 1213 Cortelyou Road, between Westminster and Argyle roads, on Wednesday, August 15th, at 6:00 p.m. Renee will answer questions about the project and explain how people can participate.

WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND IN ZIP CODE 11215 AND 11232

The Department of Health detected West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes in zip code 11215 and neighboring 11232 on August 3rd. West Nile virus can be fatal.

People, especially those over age fifty, should take personal precautions to prevent mosquito bites:

• Use repellents that contain DEET, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, IR3535, or Picaridin and always follow label instructions.
• If you're going outside from dusk to dawn, wear protective clothing, if possible, such as loose-fitting pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks.
• Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Fix or replace screens that have tears or holes.

Reduce mosquito exposure around your home:

• Eliminate any standing water that collects on your property.
• Remind or help neighbors to eliminate standing water on their properties.
• Call 311 to report standing water.

Report standing water to the Department of Health by calling 311 or by filling out an online form. The department  can't visit as many sites as are reported in order to treat the problems, so they encourage residents and business owners to get rid of standing water on their own right away.

Complaints about standing water in these places are accepted

• basement
• bird baths
• construction sites/building foundations
• containers
• fish ponds
• flower planters
• fountains
• planters, oil drums, and other water-holding containers
• ponds or lakes
• pool covers or unchlorinated pools
• puddles
• roof gutters

• unmaintained lots, yards, and other property

LEIBY KLETZKY'S MURDERER PLEADS GUILTY

Leiby Kletzky's murderer entered a guilty plea yesterday in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn to charges of second-degree murder and kidnapping. The murderer of eight-year-old Leiby had originally pleaded not guilty.

The guilty plea guarantees that the murderer will be imprisoned for forty years to life: twenty-five years to life for murder in the second degree and fifteen years to life for kidnapping in the second degree. The sentences would be served consecutively. He will be formally sentenced on August 29th. 

The plea bargain was made at the request of Leiby's parents, who did not want to have to endure a court trial. A statement by Leiby's parents is published in full in Vos Iz Neias? and The Yeshiva World. It begins

MILLING OF OCEAN PARKWAY SERVICE ROADS NEXT WEEK

The southbound Ocean Parkway Service Road from Avenue C to Ditmas Avenue and the northbound Ocean Parkway Service Road from 18th Avenue to Caton Avenue will get milled on

• Tuesday, August 7th,
• Wednesday, August 8th, and
• Thursday, August 9th.

Milling is the grinding off of the top layer of asphalt or surface of a roadway in preparation for paving. It's noisy work.

About three weeks from those dates, paving will begin.

The night before a block is scheduled to be milled or paved, the Department of Transportation is supposed to post tow-away/no parking signs on both sides of that block. Notice is also posted on the Department of Transportation's Brooklyn Milling and Paving Schedule. 

The milling and paving schedules can change if the weather or an emergency prevent work from being done.

• New farmer: Sergio Nolasco brings New Jersey's Nolasco Farms to Brooklyn. The forty-five acre farm is in Allamuchy-Panther Valley, New Jersey, in Warren County, fifty-five miles from here. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers have been used on this farm since its founding in 2005. Vegetables, Mexican specialty produce, and herbs will be sold at the greenmarket. Mr. Nolasco's family has a tradition of farming in the hilly town of Atzala, in Puebla, Mexico. He is a GrowNYC New Farmer Development Project participant.

tABLE health will give a breakfast cooking demonstration at Bartel-Pritchard Square Greenmarket at Prospect Park West at 15th Street, inside the entrance to Prospect Park.

TRASH THAT TRASH

Oscar the Grouch loves trash, but his neighbors don't mind--because every bit of it stays inside of the trash cans that they put it in. Sesame Street doesn't need the equivalent of a Kensington Trash Mob, since everyone puts their trash where it belongs.

On the other hand, some people in Kensington throw trash (cigarette butts, soda cans, candy bar wrappers, potato chip bags) on sidewalks, in the street, and in tree pits. It isn't easy to understand why they aren't willing to walk a few feet to a trash can. Until they stop littering, the Kensington Trash Mob will continue to spring into action to make the neighborhood cleaner.

On Sunday, August 5th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., everyone is invited to work together to clean up the Church Avenue area. Meet at the Green Triangle in the middle of Church Avenue by 35th Street, just past Dahill Road.
