Green-wood Cemetery will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War on Memorial Day weekend with several events.
"Honoring Their Sacrifice": An exhibition in the Historic Chapel, just inside the main Arch at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue. Official opening: Saturday, May 28th, 1:00 p.m. Free. Register in advance. On view through June 12th. Hours: weekdays, noon to 4:00 p.m.; weekends, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
"Light A Light, Honor a Hero": Volunteers have placed almost 4,000 American flags on the graves of Civil War veterans. On Sunday, May 29th, at 9:00 a.m., they'll finish placing flags and they'll light and place a luminary candle on each of the 4,500 graves. Volunteer here. Meet inside the main entrance at 25th Street and 5th Avenue.

The Grand Procession: Sunday, May 29th. 7:00 p.m.: Musical Warm-up. 8:15 p.m.: Procession, led by cavalry, past the candle-lit graves of Civil War veterans. Purchase tickets here.
The March of Honor: Monday, May 30th, 11:00 a.m. Re-enactors and descendants of the cemetery's Civil War veterans will walk to the Civil War Soldiers’ Lot. Free. Register here.
Memorial Day Concert: Monday, May 30th, 3:00 p.m. This year, they’re featuring melodies of the Civil War in addition to the works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Leonard Bernstein, and many others. Bring a blanket. Free. Register here.
