MOST SPEED HUMPS OKAYED

Five of the seven speed humps that Windsor Terrace and Park Slope residents requested were unanimously approved by Community Board 7's Transportation Committee last week. The committee will present its findings to the full board and recommend that the five humps be created.

The approved speed humps in Windsor Terrace are
  • 11th Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and Sherman Street
  • Ocean Parkway, between Caton and Kermit places

The three approved in Park Slope are
  • 21st Street, between 5th and 6th avenues
  • 6th Avenue, between 21st and 22nd streets
  • 6th Avenue, between 22nd and 23rd streets

The request for 18th Street, between 7th and 8th avenues, was denied because its opponents made a strong case against it. Discussion about 21st Street, between 4th and 5th avenues, was postponed because no residents of the block were at the meeting.

TOMMY IS SEAN CASEY'S ADOPTABLE DOG OF THE MONTH

Tommy

This sweet guy has been cooped-up for too long--he's been at Sean Casey Animal Rescue for a year. The only thing about Tommy that isn't perfect is that his head occasionally twitches. That's the result of a past bout of distemper, which is completely cured.

Aside from that, Tommy is in good health and gets along great with other dogs. He really would like to live in a loving home with people he can call his own.

Tommy is a pit bull terrier mix about four years old, neutered, free vet exam, etc.

LITTLE TREES ON MCDONALD AVE.

Inspired by Kensington Plaza, Brooklyn Medical Group's contribution to the beautification of Kensington is the planting of four miniature trees in colorful wooden planters in front of its office. Two planters flank each side of the entrance. The office is at 446 McDonald Avenue, across the street from Astoria Bank.

The last time Brooklyn Medical Group was mentioned on this blog was when Hurricane Sandy knocked its awning to the ground; a post like today's is so much pleasanter to write.

PICS OF SUSPECTS IN ASSAULT AND ROBBERY ON B103 BUS

The girls pictured above are allegedly two of the three suspects in the assault and robbery of a fifteen-year-old girl on a B103 bus.

An online news source states that the crime took place at midnight on Friday night, March 15th/Saturday morning, March 16th, but it seems more likely that it occurred on Monday, March 11th, at 4:00 p.m.

Three girls who are approximately fifteen to seventeen years old walked up to a fourth girl on the B103 and punched her in the face. They then stole her iPhone, got off the bus near Church Avenue and E. 3rd Street in Kensington, and ran away.

The victim suffered minor injuries. Anyone who can provide any type of information is asked to call Crime Stoppers. The phone number is (800) 577-TIPS.

ASSAULT AND ROBBERY ON B103 BUS

Four female teenagers were riding on the B103 bus at midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning when three of them walked up to the fourth one, punched her face, stole her iPhone, got off the bus at the stop closest to Church Avenue and E. 3rd Street in Kensington, and ran away.

The fifteen-year-old victim, who suffered minor injuries, described her attackers as between fifteen and seventeen years of age, with one carrying a large tote bag.

PIZZERIA/CAFE TO OPEN OFF CHURCH AVENUE

By the end of March, Beverley Pizza & Cafe will open at 358 E. 2nd Street in Kensington. It'll be around the corner from To B Thai, just south of Beverley Road, in the space that was occupied by a hair salon.

Eve Shakiri, the mother of owner Bennie Shakiri, says that they'll be serving other Italian dishes besides pizza, and they'll have a beer and wine license.

THE POLICE WILL BE IN KENSINGTON NEXT WEEK. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK TO THEM ABOUT?

Community council meetings provide a forum for communication between the community and the police, who share the common goal of making sure that both the community and the police are aware of problems in the neighborhood and finding solutions to them.

Big thanks go to Inspector Deddo for moving the 66th Precinct Community Council meeting out of Borough Park and into Kensington for this month's meeting.

WINDSOR TERRACE BEAT COP RETIRES

Windsor Terrace's long-time beat cop, Mike Cleary, retired from the NYPD on Friday after twenty-seven years of service to New York City.

When he joined the New York Police Department in 1985, his first assignment was in Harlem. He served there for five years.

His second assignment was much closer to home--the 72nd Precinct. On this assignment, which lasted for the next twenty-two years (1991 through 2013), he worked in the Community Policing Unit, on foot patrol in the streets of Windsor Terrace. Author and columnist Denis Hamill said that residents call Detective Cleary "the Sheriff of Windsor Terrace."

Detective 2nd Grade Michael Cleary already knew those streets quite well, having been born and raised in Windsor Terrace. He served as an altar boy at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary School (Class of 1976), and graduated from Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School (Class of 1980).

We wish the fifty-year-old Mike Cleary another fifty years to enjoy a healthy and active retirement.

RESTORATION OF HOLY NAME CHURCH

Father James Cunningham, administrator of Holy Name of Jesus Church,
talks about the plans for restoring the church's interior.

At Mass on February 24th, Fr. James Cunningham, administrator of Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, officially announced the beginning of the parish's fund raising drive for the Liturgical Restoration of the sanctuary area.

With the goal of raising $1,500,000, more than $600,000 had already been pledged by thirty donors in the week before that official announcement was made. By March 2nd, $675,000 had been raised.

The project, known as "The Restoration of Holy Name of Jesus Church, 135 years – Fulfilling Our Vision," will see the installation of the traditional ornate marble side altar that James Renwick Jr. (1818-1895) designed for St. Patrick's Cathedral (constructed 1858-1879).

In addition to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Renwick also designed the first of the Smithsonian Institution's buildings, Grace Church, St. Bartholomew's Church, St. Ann's and the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights, the former Memorial Chapel of St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, and the main building of Vassar College.

The altar Renwick designed was too large for St. Patrick's, so it was installed in St. Vincent de Paul Church in Williamsburg, where it remained until St. Vincent was sold toward the end of 2011. It and St. Vincent de Paul's two side altars and baptismal font will also become part of Holy Name.
