PETITION STATE SENATOR SIMCHA FELDER TO HOLD TOWN HALL MEETINGS

If your State Senator is Simcha Felder, this petition is for you (http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/state-sen-felder-hold?source=c.em&r_by=8597357).

If you're not sure who your State Senator is, you can find out at https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator.

Senator Felder's district, District 17, includes Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Kensington, Sunset Park, Madison, and Bensonhurst.

The petition asks Senator Felder to openly and transparently communicate with the people he represents--in person, in the senate district that they live in, on a regular basis. At these town hall meetings, residents would be able to talk directly with the senator about issues that affect their daily lives.

Senator Felder's voting record has made a number of his constituents unhappy with him. Although he is registered as a member of the Democratic Party, he has caucused with the Republicans and mostly voted with them, starting with his first election to the State Senate in 2012.

His vote can be the deciding vote in whether or not a Democrat-backed bill gets passed.

In the 2016 general election, Senator Felder ran on three party lines: Democratic, Republican, and Conservative. Two months ago, the Brooklyn Conservative Party awarded him with the Conservative Party's best rating; he's more conservative than every single Republican in the State Senate.

The petition asks him to hold regular meetings within his district, report on the work he's been doing, and allow constituents to talk and ask questions.

It asks that recording be permitted so non-attendees could view the town hall at another time.

And it asks that town halls take place every two months when the Senate is out of session and every month when the Senate is in session, for a total of nine meetings per year, starting in June 2017.

LIST OF DEMANDS REGARDING IMMIGRANT RIGHTS, PROPOSED BY OCCUPY KENSINGTON

Occupy Kensington General Meeting
Sunday, May 21st, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Occupy Kensington will meet tomorrow to discuss and vote on the organization's list of demands regarding immigrant rights and to discuss Kensington's Hate Free Zone.

At meetings of Occupy Kensington, you'll meet other local activists and share strategies and opportunities for getting involved in the issues of the day.

The May 21st meeting will be in a private house at 309 E. 5th Street, just north of Church Avenue, in Kensington.

Occupy Kensington's demands regarding immigrant rights:
We call upon Mayor de Blasio, the City Council, the NYPD and other relevant agencies to make NYC a true sanctuary city. In order to protect our most vulnerable neighbors, and keep families and communities intact:

1. Enact policies that delink the NYPD (and other city agencies) from ICE enforcement. Our fellow residents should not be stopped and questioned based on perceived immigration status, nor held on immigration detainers without a judge’s warrant. Nor should the NYPD alert ICE about immigrant court appearances. All immigrants should be entitled to legal support and services provided by the City.

2. End “Broken Windows” policing (which focuses on offenses as trivial as spitting on the sidewalk, playing “loud” music or selling loose cigarettes) and implement alternatives. This policy disproportionately targets people of color. It saddles countless New Yorkers with police records, many of them immigrants.

3. Prevent NYC ID card records from being used by ICE to profile and target immigrant families; remove the database now. The City promised removal, at the Mayor’s discretion, from the program’s inception. Immigrants and other New Yorkers were widely encouraged to sign up for the cards, which should not now be used to victimize whole communities.

About Occupy Kensington
Occupy Kensington is a community-based movement that stands in solidarity with other Occupy, 99%, and liberation movements in New York City, across the country, and around the world.

HAND OUT HEALTHCARE FLYERS AT MAYOR'S TOWN HALL

Flyering for Healthcare
Tuesday, May 16th, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The proposed New York Health Act (A4738; S4840) would provide universal, comprehensive healthcare to every New Yorker. It would replace private insurance coverage. The act would establish a New York Health Trust Fund to pay medical bills.

When the bill was introduced in a previous legislative session, the Assembly passed it. The Senate, however, killed it.

In the current legislative session, the Democrat-controlled Assembly has already advanced the bill to Third Reading. When bills reach the Order of Third Reading, they become ready for a final vote.

The Republican-controlled Senate, however, is again an obstacle to passage of the bill. The Senate has stalled the bill in its Health Committee since it was introduced two months ago.

Informational flyers explaining the benefits of the proposed universal, single-payer New York Healthcare Act will be distributed to the audience at a free town hall meeting with Mayor Bill deBlasio in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

Flyering will be done from 6:30 to 7:30. Ting Barrow will bring the flyers; meet him inside the school at 6:30.

If you have any questions, send an e-mail to Ting at ting.barrow @ gmail.com or call him at (347) 961-0231.
