APPLYING FOR DISASTER RELIEF BECAUSE OF HURRICANE IRENE

Brooklyn has been added to the list of locations eligible for disaster relief because of Hurricane Irene by the federal government. Get information from the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) website or call (800) 621-3362.

New York City's other four boroughs had already been declared major disaster areas, but Brooklyn, despite suffering millions and millions of dollars of damage, had been excluded.

FEMA reimburses local governments for seventy-five percent of the cost of responding to emergencies. It also provides funds to individuals whose property was damaged, but none of the five boroughs has been approved yet.
