ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED FOR THREE DAYS

 

Alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended from Saturday through Monday, October 10th through 12th, for Shemini Atzereth, Simchas Torah, and Columbus Day.
 
All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will remain in effect.

 

COMPOST ACCEPTED AT COMMUNITY GARDEN

 

The East 4th Street Community Garden has partnered with Big Reuse, which will be picking up the garden's food scraps and processing them into compost at Big Reuse's Salt Lot site in Gowanus.

 

The public is welcome to drop off food scraps in the green toters in the garden's compost area on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon until November 21st.

Composting

East 4th Street Community Garden 2020 Compost Rules 

Thank you for composting at the East 4th Street Community Garden and following our rules and best practices.

Drop off during open hours (through November 21)

• Wednesday 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
• Saturday 10:00 am – noon

No more than 18 people are allowed in the garden at one time, so you may have to wait to enter.

BRING

• Fruit and vegetable scraps
• Coffee grounds and tea bags
• Egg shells
• Food-soiled paper towels or napkins
• Bread and grains (nothing with oil!)
• Shredded newspaper or brown paper

 DO NOT BRING

• Meat or fish scraps
• Anything with fats, grease or oil
• Cheese or dairy products
• Pesticide-treated plants, grass clippings, pest-infested plants
• Twisty ties, rubber bands, fruit stickers
• Bioplastics (compostable bags, compostable cutlery, compostable cups)
• Paper take out containers or produce trays
• Non-compostable materials such as plastic, metals or glass 

BEST PRACTICES

• Remove any fruit and vegetable plastic labels, twisty ties or rubber bands.
• Make sure your food scraps are chopped into 2-3” chunks. 
• Please deposit your food scraps in the green toters.
• Throw away any plastic bags, including compostable biobags, at the front gate trash area. Or better yet, bring your food scraps in a reusable container.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS

Wear masks and gloves when handling compost bins>.

• Allow 6 feet of space between you and another person in the compost area.
• If we get overwhelmed, we can suspend collection with no advance notice to ensure sanitary conditions in our garden. 

PLEASE NOTE

• This is a volunteer run site with limited space. We do not have the capacity to fill the void of the suspended City run organics programs. 
• Our compost committee is actively working to create sustainable compost capacity to serve our neighborhood.

Ocean Parkway Community Cleanup

Monday, October 12th, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The next community cleanup of beautiful, historic Ocean Parkway will take place on Monday, October 12th (a federal holiday), from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The rain date is Sunday, October 25th, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

 

The Kensington Stewards (TKS), the Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA), and the Ocean Parkway Community Development Corporation (OPCDC) will co-sponsor it, along with the New York City Parks Department.

 

The Parks Department, TKS, and ANA will provide grabbers, rakes, and gloves for picking up the litter and garbage bags to stash it in.

After meeting on the east side of the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Beverley Road (the side of Ocean Parkway that's closer to E. 7th Street) at 9:00 a.m., volunteers will clean up the east side of Ocean Parkway, between Beverley Road and Avenue C. Join them at any time between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

 

Wear a mask, and be mindful of social distancing.

BEING MINDFUL: INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS WITH RAMIT KREITNER (ONLINE)

Introduction to Mindfulness with Ramit Kreitner (Online)

Saturdays, October 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th, 7:00 a.m. to 8:05 a.m.

Ramit Kreitner of Jaya Yoga Center--based in Windsor Terrace and Park Slope--will lead an online Introduction to Mindfulness series.

 

The series is presented on a sliding scale basis. The suggested donation is as follows:

Option A: $40 ($10 for each class)
Option B: $60 ($15 for each class)
Option C: $80 ($20 for each class).

Teaching fees will be donated to Kensington-Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid, a network of "Neighbors Supporting Neighbors in Brooklyn, New York."

Each of the four 65-minute classes will include a short talk, meditation instruction, and practice as well as time for questions and discussion.

COMPOST DROP-OFF SITE REOPENS IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Prospect Farm in Windsor Terrace has announced that compost can once again be dropped off there on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon. May 9th was the last day that drop-offs were accepted because the garden had received an overwhelming amount of compost. Sanitation Department curbside pick-ups are suspended through June 30, 2021.

After a pandemic-related hiatus, Prospect Farm is now back to collecting our neighborhood's food scraps, diverting them from landfills, and making healthy and fertile compost to feed our local soils.

Mask wearing and physical distancing guidelines will be enforced so please be respectful.

Please only bring accepted materials, as listed below, to be donated to Prospect Farm and be sure to remove any produce stickers, rubber bands, and twist ties from your scraps before dumping them.

GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY'S FALL HOURS

 

 Good news about closing time from the President of Green-wood Cemetery:

We know how important Green-Wood has been for members of our community over the last six months—as a safe space to wander, explore history, and commune with nature.

As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, Green-Wood closes the gates a bit earlier in the day. Typically, on October 1st, our closing time shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

This year, because we have welcomed an unprecedented number of visitors, we have decided to keep all four of our entrances open till 6:00 p.m. daily through the month of October. That means you will have an hour more than usual at this time of year to enjoy our landscape each evening. 

 

We will resume our regular fall hours (5:00 p.m. closing time) in November.

We hope that Green-Wood will continue to serve as a welcome respite from the challenges of 2020.

Reusable, machine-washable face masks for children will be given away at Thomas J. Cuite Park (aka Froggy Park) on Saturday, September 26th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or until supplies run out.

 

The masks are sized for children ages three through twelve, with a limit of two masks per family.

From Green-Wood Cemetery:

"Green-Wood Cemetery is finishing an interior restoration of both the Gatehouse and the Residence at the Fort Hamilton Park entrance. In doing so, there are two exterior modifications that require approvals from the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Community Board.

1. In making the public bathrooms in the Gatehouse ADA-compliant, Green-Wood must raise the landing at the entrance door in order to install a ramp. Architect, Josh Brandfonbrener, will present designs for the ramp to the Community Board.

2. Green-Wood would like to add a section to the fence in the backyard of the residence. The fence, which will match the existing fence, would partition the yard and create an opening in the existing fence that currently separates the yard from adjacent burial space. Plans for the fence will be presented to the Community Board." 

The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Fort Hamilton Parkway Entrance as a landmark in 2016.

 

The Caretaker's Residence and the Visitor's Cottage (the gatehouse) at the entrance are shown in the  photograph above, taken soon after they were completed in 1877. Architect Richard Michell Upjohn (1828-1903) designed the brownstone buildings in the High Victorian Gothic style. In the visitors' cottage, visitors to the cemetery were able to rest after their travels.
