WE KNOW WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHERE KENSINGTON IS

Two days ago, we asked "Doesn't Anyone Know Where Kensington Is?" We now know who doesn't know--New York City Councilmember David G. Greenfield.

The New York Times sent us an e-mail stating that its reporter, Gregory Beyer, got the description of Borough Park's boundaries from Councilmember Greenfield. But that description incorrectly places part of Kensington within Borough Park: Borough Park, it says, is "Bounded by Fort Hamilton Parkway to the west, 60th Street to the south, McDonald Avenue and Bay Parkway to the east, and McDonald Avenue to the north."

Councilmember Greenfield is the City Council's representative for Borough Park, Midwood, and Bensonhurst.

FREE MULCH FOR OUR STREET TREES

Free Mulch for Our Street Trees
Saturday, October 16th, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Kensington's street trees aren't getting enough water. Fresh mulch can help them stay alive. Mulch is put on top of the soil in order to retain whatever moisture the trees get from rain or from people watering them. It also reduces erosion and provides nutrients.

MillionTreesNYC says
We're writing to MillionTreesNYC Stewards and residents who have expressed interest in tree stewardship to let you know about a great opportunity to pick up FREE mulch for your new street trees this fall!
This Saturday, October 16th, MillionTreesNYC will be hosting a table at the Red Hook Added Value Community Farm's Harvest Festival near the Brooklyn waterfront from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The event will feature live music, a cider press, kids activities, and lots of games and giveaways. There will also be a farmer's market with fresh produce!
Please BRING A STURDY BAG with you to receive free mulch (created from chipped trees which fell during last month's storm) for the trees in your community.
The Added Value Community Farm is located between Columbia, Sigourney, Otsego, and Halleck Streets in Red Hook, Brooklyn (right across the street from the Ikea store). For more information regarding this year's Harvest Festival, please visit Added Value's website:  http://www.added-value.org/.
And keep an eye on the MillionTreesNYC Community Calendar for more fall planting and stewardship opportunities: http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.5ceeec019daf48a37a9977e346a09da0 .
A few tips for good mulching:
· Mulching a tree helps to conserve soil moisture so that the need for watering is reduced. It also insulates the soil’s surface, helping to retain warmth during the winter months. Because mulch will not compete for water and nutrients as living vegetation does, the organic materials that compose it will prevent the growth of invasive weeds and grass in the tree pit.
· Refresh the mulch ring around the base of your trees.  Apply mulch in a ring at least 6 inches from the base of the tree trunk (do not let the mulch touch the tree itself).  Cover the soil outside of the ring out to the edge of the bed with 2-4 inches of mulch. Never pile mulch more than 4 inches high; go by what we like to call “the rule of the donut” when mulching trees. Remember: better a donut than a volcano!
Happy mulching!
Sincerely,
The MillionTreesNYC Team
Mulch is also available to the public for free year-round at Green-wood Cemetery. Use the main entrance at 5th Avenue and 25th Street. For more information, call (718) 768-7300 or send an e-mail to info@greenwoodcemetery.org.

BENCHES AND TREES, ROTATING MEETING PLACES, WEBSITE

BENCHES AND TREES
As mentioned in an earlier blog post, at Community Board 12's public hearing on its budget, KARMA requested that the Board ask for benches and trees in front of Walgreens in their Expense Budget Requests & Priorities for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

At last night's meeting of Dahill Neighborhood Association/West Kensington Action Group (DNA/WKAG), KARMA told Councilmember Brad Lander about that request. He said he would follow up on it with the Community Board. He also suggested that residents continue to bring up the issue at meetings of the Board and other community/neighborhood organizations.

ROTATING MEETING PLACES
Kensington residents have been telling Brad that we want Community Board 12 and the 66th Precinct Community Council to occasionally hold their meetings in Kensington, rather than having every meeting in Borough Park. He talked about it at the DNA/WKAG meeting and advised people to contact CB 12 and the Community Council to make that request.

WEBSITE
Community Board 12's website doesn't have much information on it. The Announcements page and the Calendar are blank, and the Resources Directory page doesn't have any resources on it.

At the last CB 12 meeting, KARMA requested that they add information to their website that would be useful to the community, such as an announcement about the upcoming meeting and its agenda, the minutes of the previous meeting, and information about the issues that the various committees are working on.

They told us that they have one full-time and two part-time employees and that those employees don't have time to work on the website. Someone in the audience suggested getting a volunteer to do it. Someone else then volunteered. Hopefully, the website will soon be a treasure trove of information.

DOESN'T ANYONE KNOW WHERE KENSINGTON IS?

It's a case of mistaken boundaries again--this time in The New York Times. So, we wrote this letter:
To the Editor:

In the article "Living In - Borough Park, Brooklyn," Gregory Beyer describes the boundaries of Borough Park as "Bounded by Fort Hamilton Parkway to the west, 60th Street to the south, McDonald Avenue and Bay Parkway to the east, and McDonald Avenue to the north."

However, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development defines Kensington's boundaries as "Green-Wood cemetery and Caton Avenue to the north; Prospect Park, the Parade grounds and Kensington stables to the northeast; Coney Island Avenue to the east; Foster Avenue and 47th Street to the south; and Dahill Road and 36th Street to the west."

The description and the map accompanying Mr. Beyer's article, therefore, incorrectly place a portion of Kensington in Borough Park.

DO GOOD FOR THE 'HOOD: VOTE FOR KENSINGTON!

Vote for Sean Casey! Vote for Amelia Costigan! Vote for Ellen Honigstock! Vote for Maggie Tobin! Help Kensington win money!

Each of these civic-minded neighbors of ours will get $5,000 donated to a recognized 501(c)3 charitable entity of his or her choice in Brooklyn--if they get enough votes. So, please vote for them!

Voting has been extended an extra two days, through Sunday, October 17th, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Read more about the competition here and here.

WHEN WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH CAME TO TOWN

Assemblymember Dov Hikind was restrained by police when he tried to knock signs out of the hands of the Phelps family.

150 counter-demonstrators were at Chabad of Kensington, including photographers and reporters.

BONANZA?

Socks, clothing, sheets.
Jewelry, perfume, magnets.
Sausages, roasted corn, lemonade.
Things for kids to bounce in.
Kitchen Magic.
Lotto.

Church Avenue was almost eerie yesterday during the hours that I was at the Church Avenue Bonanza. The large crowd that used to fill the street wasn't there. Maybe the age of generic street fairs is over....

WORLDTRAVELERMAN TOURS KENSINGTON

The Worldtravelerman presents:
An Extensive Tour Of Brooklyn New York City By Bicycle

Last year, a bicyclist who goes by the name "WorldTravelerMan" toured Brooklyn's neighborhoods, filming his journey with a bike cam. Let's join him as he leaves Boro Park and wends his way along Church Avenue from Bergament to Ocean Parkway, briefly detouring down McDonald Avenue almost to Avenue C and then pedaling back up to Church Avenue.

At 4 minutes, 22 seconds into the video, WorldTravelerMan rides past one of Church Avenue's less-appealing sights: the garbage-laden truck parking lot by 35th Street, across from the Green Triangle. As he passes it, you'll hear him comment "Mmmmm. Barbeque."

A viewer, "EvilBob Portland rider," offers WorldTravelerMan some sage advice:
Bike riding hints
Hey this is a great idea, and keep it up, however as a long time cyclist, I almost can't enjoy the vids, because of your horrific riding.
Please ride on the same side of the road as traffic, obey all the signs and lights that the cars do, don't weave in and out going the wrong way, don't go up onto the sidewalk (or even in the street) and cut off pedestrians. Ride with/learn from an expert (I'm sure there are many in NYC!) and then film.
Unfortunately you are setting a terrible example for other riders, (esp kids), and you are not only endangering yourself, but people walking, and even cars that you are causing to swerve to avoid you. Even other cyclists are endangered because the people in cars are being reinforced that bicycles don't follow the rules, so why should they treat you (us) with respect as another vehicle?
Don't get too mad or disappointed at this criticism, Your idea is still fabulous, just remember you can also do a great thing by also teaching safety and proper cycling etiquette along with the tours!
WorldTravelerMan's forty videos of Brooklyn neighborhoods can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/WorldTravelerMan#g/c/183BF1007D99A13D.

BANGLADESH SOCIETY OF NEW YORK VOTES ON MCDONALD AVENUE

Bangladeshis from Brooklyn and Staten Island voted today on McDonald Avenue in front of the post office and the P.S. 230 Annex for candidates running for office in the Bangladesh Society of New York (BSNY). BSNY is the largest Bangladeshi welfare organization in the United States.
After I explained that I was taking photos on behalf of KARMA, I was welcome to continue.
