MUSICAL STORYTIME FOR BABIES AT OAK & IRIS

Musical Storytime for Babies with Joanne Riel
Fridays, September 17th through October 8th,
11:15 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Join Joanne Riel for a musical storytime with a creative spirit. Stories come to life with music mostly improvised by the children. Autoharp, marimba, shakers, and more! Joanne’s CD, "The Flying Teapot," is also used as well as multicultural music. Joanne's vision is to create nurturing and joyful musical environments for children from the very start of life.

The cost for the four-week series is $40 per child, with a sibling discount of $5. The series must be paid for in advance. A new series begins every four weeks.

If space is available for drop-ins, the cost is $12 per class.

Recommended for ages birth through 14 months. Class size limited to 6.

Please RSVP to Joanne at joafree1@msn.com to reserve your space or to ask questions about the class.

Class location: The Oak and the Iris Caf
é
2826 Fort Hamilton Parkway (corner of E. 4th Street)

A personal note from Joanne:

I’m excited about teaching a music class for babies at The Oak and the Iris. The café is dedicating the couch and tables in the back for our class. In return, we need some rules in place for the class to work. Purchase something while you are there and be responsible for the behavior of your children. We also need to cooperate with clean-up after the class by putting chairs and tables back in place and leaving our space in good shape. The café is a family-friendly place, so let‘s be respectful of their needs as well.

WHY THE SING-A-LONGS WERE DISCONTINUED

Sasha, co-owner of The Oak and the Iris Cafe with her husband Rodrigo, has responded to people's e-mails asking her why Yoshie's and Miss Katie's sing-a-longs will no longer be held at O&I.

She writes that
Yoshie canceled his sing-a-longs because he was too busy to continue holding them.

She says that the decision to cancel Miss Katie's sing-a-longs was an
unhappy one for her, and she regrets that parents feel disappointed. Miss Katie's sing-a-longs were Miss Katie's events, for which the cafe provided space. Sasha has contacted a friend of hers--the owner of Kaleidoscope (1519 10th Avenue, at the corner of 16th Street)--and her friend is willing to provide space for Miss Katie's sing-a-longs.

The sing-a-longs, Sasha explains, were attracting twenty-five children, each accompanied by a parent or caregiver and a stroller, making the cafe crowded to the point of being unsafe. At most of the sing-a-longs, the cafe's property suffered damage: in the past month, two chairs were broken,
dishes were broken, books were torn, a child opened the drink refrigerator and threw bottled drinks on the floor, and cereal boxes were sent rolling around on the floor.

In addition, the cafe's regular customers weren't going to the cafe on the afternoons of the sing-a-longs. Sales during those afternoons totaled only $15. Out of the $5 per person that Miss Katie charged, the cafe received between $3 and $8.
Cleaning up afterward was time-consuming for the cafe's staff. Sasha says that for two years, she tried to think of the sing-a-longs as being similar to charity events for the community, but the sing-a-longs had turned into a financial loss for the business.

For now, the cafe continues to offer a musical story time on Wednesday afternoons that is geared toward babies and one-year-olds. It's possible that a children's art class will be held at O&I, with a limit of ten children, first come first served.

The Oak and the Iris Cafe continues to welcome children. The cafe is built around families, as evidenced by the children's play area and the children's menu.

PARTY SPACE AT THE OAK AND THE IRIS CAFE

Posted on a neighborhood listserv and reprinted here with permission:

"Hi neighbors,
We heard from this list that The Oak and the Iris was available as a party space, so this past weekend we had our two-year-old' s birthday party there. It was absolutely lovely! The space is comfortable (and was truly ideal for toddlers), the food was delicious, the staff was accommodating and helpful, and the price is right. We heartily recommend this neighborhood gem for your next affair!"

And don't forget O&I's special: buy one dinner and get the second one for half price!

THE OAK AND THE IRIS: TASTY FOOD AND FREE WI-FI

Attention, laptop computer users! An article in The Wall Street Journal ("No More Perks: Coffee Shops Pull the Plug on Laptop Users") reports that "Amid the economic downturn, there are fewer places in New York to plug in computers. A decade-old love affair between coffee shops and laptop-wielding customers is fading. In New York, the trend is accelerating among independents."

The Oak and The Iris Cafe, however, continues to provide its customers with a wi-fi connection. Free. For however long you sit there. (But charge your battery before you go.)
O and I's motto is "healthy, original, organic, polite, and cozy." The owners have created a warm, welcoming atmosphere. In addition to providing free wi-fi, they provide a play area for children, high chairs, a comfortable sofa, and a free meeting place for community events. They even have a suggestion box!

The cafe serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Among the many delicious menu choices are fresh-squeezed juices (apple and carrot, strawberry and orange), fresh fruit smoothies (strawberry and/or banana, pineapple and/or cantaloupe), and omelets made with your choice of a cheese or a vegetable and a meat (and served with toast and home fries or fruit salad).

Your taste buds will also be pleased by their panini (prosciutto and mozzarella, albacore tuna with Italian grilled artichokes, feta with black olive paste and hummus), salads (including grilled vegetable salad), homemade soups, entrees (such as grilled salmon fillet and peppered steak), latte, cappuccino, Italian iced coffee, tiramisu, and flan.

Enjoy your meal at one of the outdoor tables (if you can tolerate hot weather!).

Plans are underway for upgrading breakfast, baking pastry items on the premises daily, creating new sauces, and offering more dinner entrees.

Free delivery is available with a minimum order of $10.

O and I also offers a catering menu.
