RENOWNED KLEZMER MUSICIANS IN CONCERT IN KENSINGTON

                                     Night of the Klezmer Virtuosi:
Andy Statman Klezmer Ensemble
and
Jake Shulman-Ment's Midwood
              Wednesday, October 25th, 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Andy Statman Klezmer Ensemble and Jake Shulman-Ment's Midwood will bring klezmer music to Flatbush Jewish Center's monthly music series, "Church Avenue Sessions."

Klezmer is the traditional Jewish instrumental music that originated in the 17th century in Eastern Europe. It portrays many emotions, many states of mind, and many states of being. Itinerant Jewish musicians played this music on occasions ranging from weddings to holidays.

Master clarinetist Andy Statman studied with legendary klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras. Statman played a major role in the rediscovery of klezmer music in the 1970s.

In 2012, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded him a National Heritage Fellowship, the highest recognition in the United States for excellence in traditional and folk art.

Violinist Jake Shulman-Ment began playing the violin when he was just three years old. His klezmer violin studies began at the age of twelve, under the tutelage of the noted Alicia Svigals. He is one of the leaders of a younger generation of klezmer musicians.

The session will start be on Wednesday, October 25th, at 7:30 p.m.

The price of admission to the session is $15 per adult and $7 per child (under age 16).

VOTE (OFTEN) FOR THIS LOCAL SCHOOL TO WIN $100,000

BROOKLYN COLLEGE ACADEMY LAUNCHES
 PIONEERING MINDFULNESS CENTER

Center is Sole New York State Finalist in 100K Dream Big Teacher Challenge

Brooklyn, NY: Brooklyn College Academy (BCA), an early college high school, has launched an innovative Mindfulness Center that will support more than 600 students' social emotional well-being. The center is one of only two such spaces in a New York City public school to help students beat stress and build the resilience they need to remain mentally healthy and strong.

The Kensington-based school stands to win a $100,000 award for the center as the only New York State finalist in the Farmers Insurance Dream Big Teacher Challenge—a national competition that funds teachers with big dreams—and one of only 15 finalists nationwide. The public is invited to vote for the winning award recipient at https://lnkd.in/gywwhDq from September 29 through October 30, 2017.

The Mindfulness Center is the brainchild of humanities teacher Linda Noble, PhD, who champions students' mental health. “Now, more than ever, we need mindful engagement," says Noble.

“Our students need time to focus on their mental health. There's an epidemic of depression and anxiety among the nation's high school students, and many are witness to or victims of violence. These stressor how a powerful impact on students; emotional core," explains Noble.

Studies have shown that mindfulness in schools can build young people's coping skills, reduce stress, increase happiness in students, and even fight teacher burnout.. Practicing mindfulness has also been linked to increased brain activity in the regions associated with positive emotions. BCA's Mindfulness Center builds on this impact in innovative ways. The Center will add to BCA's carefully coordinated guidance program, and expand the school's nurturing environment.

BCA is a highly successful “early-college” high school, serving primarily low-income students who are typically both underserved by their communities and underrepresented in college. Many experience stress, depression, and myriad socio-economic/emotional challenges that can overwhelm their ability to balance a rigorous curriculum (including college coursework) and competitive college admissions. Even with these stressors, 99% of the students graduate (compared with 69% citywide), and 93% go to college.

With a $10,000 Fund for Public Health—New York City Mental Health by Design in Schools Award, BCA renovated a storage room to make room for the Mindfulness Center, which will support students, staff, parents, and eventually, the broader community, with practices that include meditation, reflection, self-soothing, and deep breathing.

David Perrin, director of MNDFL Ed, and BCA's programming partner for the Mindfulness Center says: "The Mindfulness Center at Brooklyn College Academy demonstrates the school's commitment to its students. Health and well-being are integral to a well-rounded education. Academic success is only possible when a student develops positive self worth, the ability to listen and empathize with others, and the skills to manage stress and overwhelm.

"We believe mindfulness and compassion practices should be the anchor of any good curriculum, not an additive. The Mindfulness Center at BCA fosters academic success through health and wellbeing. It is a model for many schools to follow and learn from, "explains Perrin.

BCA would use a $100,000 Big Dream award to support mindfulness professional development for all of its teachers, who would in turn use these practices in the classroom and for themselves. Students would also be trained to become mindfulness practitioners, leading meditation and other sessions for their peers in the dedicated space.

Finally, award money would fund a research component to demonstrate how a dedicated space for mindfulness, involving student practitioners and promoting a mindfulness culture across a school, can have far-reaching effects in nurturing a healthy school environment.

The Mindfulness Center aligns directly with an initiative spearheaded by the New York City Mayor's Fund mental health initiative and reinforces New York City First Lady Chirlane McCray’s call for better school-based services to help students on this front.

ARRESTS MADE IN CASE OF ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING OF TEENAGE GIRL

Two suspects were arrested tonight for the September 22nd attempted kidnapping of a fifteen-year-old girl. The crime took place in front of a commercial building at 370 19th Street (between 7th and 8th avenues) at 2:40 p.m.

Brooklyn residents Raymond Ortiz, 60, of Wyckoff Street, and Delgria Lynch, 33, of Avenue T, were charged with two counts of second degree attempted kidnapping, acting in a manner injurious to a child, and two counts of second degree harassment. Two publications give his name as Richard Ortiz.

Allegedly, Lynch lured the girl over to the SUV that Lynch was a passenger in. Ortiz then grabbed the girl by her arms and tried to pull her into the SUV, but she was able to break away from him and escape.

PEOPLE AND THINGS ARE NEEDED FOR A HALLOWEEN/HARVEST PARTY FOR THE KIDS AT THE KENSINGTON FAMILY SHELTER

A Halloween/Harvest party is being planned for the families in the Kensington Family Shelter.

Catherine and Tracy, our neighbors who volunteer as liaisons between the shelter and the Kensington and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods, sent this e-mail to the community. To receive their e-mails about the shelter (about once a month), send an e-mail to givemeshelterbk @ gmail.com.

----------------------------------

Neighbors,

We hope everyone is having a fantastic start of fall. This is a busy time at the Kensington family shelter and we wanted to share with you some of the upcoming activities.

First of all, thanks to everyone who donated clothing and other items for the back-to-school, back-to-work drive this month. The shelter got everything it needed and was very grateful for the community support.

Our next big project is a Halloween/Harvest party for the shelter kids. It will be held Saturday, October 28th, from noon to 2 p.m.

Here's how to help:

Costumes: Please drop off costumes in excellent condition to the shelter, 385 McDonald Ave. (across the street from Foodtown), attention Uniquia Parker, by October 15th. That Spider-Man or panda bear costume your kid wore last year for three hours of trick-or-treating that is not tattered or stained is just the type of thing to donate. Toddler/pre-school costumes are particularly needed.

An event captain: This is someone who can work with us to make sure we have everything we need for the party and be on site the day of from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ensure things go smoothly. We keep these events relatively simple, so it's not a ton of work, but will require some emails and phone calls.

Face-painters: As anyone who has been to one of the shelter parties in the past can attest, the face-painters are the stars of these events. We will supply the paints (unless you have some of your own that you prefer to use) and you supply the creativity. You don't have to be Michelangelo for this gig, but you should be comfortable with kids and a paintbrush. If you would like to volunteer for a couple of hours, raise your hand by sending an email to givemeshelterbk @ gmail.com with the subject line FACEPAINT.

Entertainment: We would love to provide some kind of kid-friendly entertainment. Maybe it's a sing-along. Maybe it's a DJ who can get the kids doing the Monster Mash. Maybe you're a magician who can spare an hour of your time? Please raise your hand by replying with the subject line ENTERTAINMENT.

Volunteers: We need a few volunteers to be on hand to help with drinks and snacks, run a craft project and assist with setup and cleanup. You can sign up here: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0848AFAF2AA5FA7-halloween1

Note: The shelter has an 18-plus policy for onsite volunteers so you cannot bring your own children if you volunteer. Sorry!

Stuff: We've created an Amazon wishlist for a few things we need: crafts, some snacks, a few decorations (we have a lot left from last year). Here's the link: http://a.co/6NsW0ra

Going forward, we are planning more holiday activities, including a big holiday toy and gift drive, so please keep your eyes peeled for details on those in the coming weeks.

As always, we thank you for being amazing neighbors and want you to know how much the shelter staff and the families appreciate this community's ongoing generosity and kindness.

Love,
Catherine and Tracy

TENANT IS SENTENCED FOR KILLING HIS LANDLORD WITH A SWORD

Press Release from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office

Kensington Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison
For Fatally Stabbing Landlord with Sword

Apprehended in Airport before Boarding Flight to his Native Bangladesh

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez today announced that a 31-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing his landlord with a samurai sword during a dispute inside a basement he was leasing from the victim.

Acting District Attorney Gonzalez said, “This defendant caused a tragic and completely senseless death, taking the life of a beloved businessman and a father of three. He will now serve a very long prison sentence for his brutal and violent conduct.”

The Acting District Attorney identified the defendant as Rasel Siddiquee, 31 of Kensington, Brooklyn. He was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog to 25 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision following his guilty plea earlier this month to first-degree manslaughter.

The Acting District Attorney said that, according to the evidence, on January 6, 2014 the defendant was inside a basement apartment at 546 McDonald Avenue in Kensington, which he was renting from the victim, Mahiuddin Mahmud.

The defendant, who was holding a sword, became angry at the victim over a pedicab license that was received in the mail. He struck the victim with the sword multiple times and continued to strike him in the throat after he fell to the ground, the evidence showed.

The defendant was apprehended on January 8, 2014 in Kennedy Airport after using his credit card to buy a flight ticket to Bangladesh.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Melissa Carvajal, Deputy Bureau Chief of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gough, Chief.
