Kensington Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison

For Fatally Stabbing Landlord with Sword

Apprehended in Airport before Boarding Flight to his Native Bangladesh

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez today announced that a 31-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing his landlord with a samurai sword during a dispute inside a basement he was leasing from the victim.

Acting District Attorney Gonzalez said, “This defendant caused a tragic and completely senseless death, taking the life of a beloved businessman and a father of three. He will now serve a very long prison sentence for his brutal and violent conduct.”

The Acting District Attorney identified the defendant as Rasel Siddiquee, 31 of Kensington, Brooklyn. He was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog to 25 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision following his guilty plea earlier this month to first-degree manslaughter.

The Acting District Attorney said that, according to the evidence, on January 6, 2014 the defendant was inside a basement apartment at 546 McDonald Avenue in Kensington, which he was renting from the victim, Mahiuddin Mahmud.

The defendant, who was holding a sword, became angry at the victim over a pedicab license that was received in the mail. He struck the victim with the sword multiple times and continued to strike him in the throat after he fell to the ground, the evidence showed.

The defendant was apprehended on January 8, 2014 in Kennedy Airport after using his credit card to buy a flight ticket to Bangladesh.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Melissa Carvajal, Deputy Bureau Chief of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gough, Chief.

MAN CHARGED IN MURDER OF MAHIUDDIN MAHMUD, HIS LANDLORD

The police arrested and charged Md. Rasel Siddiquee with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in yesterday's murder of Kensington businessperson and landlord Mahiuddin Mahmud. 

They had sought Siddiquee for questioning in the murder of Mahmud, his landlord. At 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, they arrested him at JFK Airport with a "substantial amount of money." Mr. Mahmud's family had said that about $20,000 was missing from the open safe in his office.

News12 Brooklyn reported this morning that Siddiquee has confessed. 

The Bengali community in Kensington is mourning the death of Mr. Mahmud. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

MURDERED MAN'S TENANT ARRESTED

A close friend of the late Mahiuddin Mahmud reports that within 24 hours of Mr. Mahmud's murder in Kensington, the police have located the "person of interest" that they sought: his tenant, Mohammed Siddiquee. They found him in Queens and have arrested him. They call him "a person of interest." Police are speculating that a landlord-tenant dispute preceded the murder.

This is Mohammed Siddiquee. He is the "person of interest" who the police are trying to locate for questioning about today's early morning murder of Mahiuddin Mahmud.

The twenty-seven-year-old was Mr. Mahmud's tenant in the building at 546 McDonald Avenue. He lived in the basement apartment, next to the one Mr. Mahmud used as an office and was murdered in. The police say that a landlord-tenant dispute led to the killing.

FIRST UPDATE TO GRUESOME POST ABOUT A GRUESOME MURDER ON MCDONALD AVENUE

Landlord and store owner Mahiuddin Mahmud was murdered this morning in his basement office in a small apartment building he owned at 546 McDonald Avenue, between Church Avenue and Avenue C.

He rented out an electronics store, People N Tech, in the same building. In his basement office, he dealt in check-cashing and currency. His brothers told police that probably $20,000 was missing from the office safe.

At about 12:25 a.m., the police arrived at the building and found him dead. They were there in response to a 911 call of an assault in progress. One of his brothers had found him first.

Please prepare yourselves to read a gory description or skip over it: Mr. Mahmud's head had been bashed, his face was burned, and lacerations to his throat were so deep that they almost decapitated him.

Nobody has been arrested. NYPD will check a surveillance camera. Police describe the tenant who lived in the apartment next to the office as a "person of interest." He may have argued with Mr. Mahmud before the murder. He is in his 20s and has not been seen since the murder. 

The 57-year-old Mr. Mahmud, nicknamed "Dulal," lived on Westminster Road. He immigrated from Sandwip, an island along the southeastern coast of Bangladesh in the Chittagong District. He was the father of two young boys.

A long-time businessperson and a community leader, Mr. Mahmud was active in the Church-McDonald Bangladesh Business Association (CMBBA).

Mr. Mahmud's father was a famous headmaster in Bangladesh.

His body will be transported to Bangladesh for burial.

UPDATE: First Update to a Gruesome Post about a Gruesome Murder on McDonald Avenue

Police suspect the tenant who lived in the apartment and who has disappeared.

At about 12:25 a.m., police found the victim either "unconscious and unresponsive" or already dead. They were there in response to a 911 call of an assault in progress.

With my apologies for these words: Mahiuddin Mahmud (possibly spelled Mahuddin Mahmood) had deep lacerations to his throat that almost decapitated him, a bashed head, and a burned face.

The 57-year-old Mr. Mahmud lived on Westminster Road. He immigrated "from a small island in Bangladesh" and "was the father of two young boys." He will be buried in Bangladesh.
