BEYOND A HEAT ADVISORY: EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING ISSUED

The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning today at 4:11 p.m. for the New York City area, in effect until 4:00 a.m. Saturday. Another warning has been issued for tomorrow from noon until 6:00 p.m.

The combination of heat and humidity will make the outdoors feel like it's 105 degrees or higher.

In case that isn't bad enough news, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

These conditions are dangerous to the health of humans and animals. People who are at the most risk are those without have air conditioning, older adults, and people who have chronic health conditions. Everyone should avoid strenuous activity.

Don't keep animals inside a car, even with the windows rolled down. Cars heat up amazingly quickly and can cause an animal's death.

See the New York City Office of Emergency Management's website for information about the symptoms of heat illness, which people are at risk, how to beat the heat, spray caps and fire hydrants, and how to conserve electrical energy.

Cooling Centers will be open tomorrow. Search by address or intersection to find their locations. Their hours may change, so call them before you go and ask what their hours are. Call 311 anytime you need information.

Dress lightly and drink a lot of water!
