Screening of The Homestretch

A free screening of The Homestretch, a documentary film that follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future, will take place at The Church of the Holy Apostles on Sunday, June 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. 

Through haunting images, intimate scenes, and first-person narratives, these teens take the audience on their journeys of struggle and triumph. As their stories unfold, the film connects viewers deeply with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights. The film provides a powerful, original perspective on what it means to be young, homeless, and building a future in America today.
 

A discussion with the filmmaker (and parishioner) Kirsten Kelly will follow the screening.

The Homestretch has not been rated. It runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

On Monday, May 27th (Memorial Day), alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations and parking meter regulations will be suspended.

Stopping, standing, and parking are permitted except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect seven days a week (e.g., "No Standing Anytime").

These rules apply on major legal holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. On all other holidays, only street cleaning rules are suspended, and other regulations remain in effect.

Sunday's free events inside the garden:

• 10:00 a.m.: Practice gentle qigong. Its simple sequence of flowing movements, breathing techniques, self-massage, and guided meditation will help promote feelings of balance, relaxation, and renewal. The practice will be led by Marisa Carroll, Certified Healer-Within Qigong Practice Leader, The Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi.

• Noon: Bring a mat for a Pilates workshop conducted by Emily Wexler to foster your holistic sense of wellness and power. Her clients have ranged in age from ten to ninety-seven and have come from diverse experiences and backgrounds.

In addition to her artistic work and practicing and teaching Pilates, Emily teaches Dance History/Theory/Criticism & the Poetics of Movement and Metaphor at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia, Long Island University in Brooklyn, and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

All of the flea market proceeds will be used to fund expenses and programs at the garden, which is tended and operated by volunteers.

Events at the garden this season will include

• an exclusive showing of the award-winning documentary Cranberry Lake, hosted by its creator (and garden member), Zoya Baker,
• a return engagement by Joanne Riel, whose musical play will encourage children and their families to explore expression, creativity, and learning through music and movement, and
• a puppet show by WonderSpark Puppets, followed by a finger-puppet-making workshop.

The East Fourth Street Community Garden, located between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue, has served the neighborhoods of Windsor Terrace and Kensington for forty years.

NEW COMMANDING OFFICER OF 66TH PRECINCT (KENSINGTON, BOROUGH PARK, MIDWOOD)

Deputy Inspector James King, Commanding Officer, 66th Precinct

Brooklyn's 66th Precinct has a new Commanding Officer (CO), Deputy Inspector James King. DI King has been the Commanding Officer of the 61st Precinct (Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay) for the past two years.

Meet Inspector King tomorrow night at his first meeting with the public. The 66th Precinct Community Council meeting will take place on Thursday, May 16th, at 7:00 p.m., at the Community Board 12 office, 5910 13th Avenue. Read more about it here.

Deputy Inspector David Wall, who has been the CO of the 66th Precinct since January 2017, has been transferred to the 70th Precinct.

66TH PRECINCT MEETS WITH THE PUBLIC THIS WEEK

66th Precinct Community Council Monthly Public Meeting
Thursday, May 16th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

The public can report crimes and other policing matters in Kensington, Borough Park, and Midwood at the upcoming 66th Precinct Community Council meeting.

The 66th Precinct's commanding officer, Captain David Wall, will update residents on recent crimes in those neighborhoods, but the input of people who live within the boundaries of the precinct is also essential.

At the meeting, the public can learn about the various programs available to the community through the precinct.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 16th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It's free, and it's open to the public.

Boundaries of the 66th Precinct:

The purpose of the 66th Precinct Community Council is to provide the critical interface between citizens and police through regular monthly meetings. Meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of the month, from September through June. The Community Council does not meet in July or August.

FREE DANCERCISE CLASS FOR OLDER ADULTS HAS RESUMED IN WINDSOR TERRACE

The free dancercise workshop for older adults (people ages fifty and over) is back. "While listening to soothing tunes, you will be exposed to light movement, stretching, strengthening, breathwork, and self-massage techniques."

The new venue for the workshop is the P.S. 130 Lower School, across the street from its former meeting place, the Windsor Terrace Library.

The time that the class begins has also changed. At the library, it met on Mondays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It still meets on Mondays, but it now meets from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The P.S. 130 Lower School is located between Ocean Parkway, Fort Hamilton Parkway, E. 5th Street, and Caton Avenue. To get to the class, enter the school through the E. 5th Street entrance.

The class hadn't been held since the library closed for renovations at the beginning of February.

F TRAIN SKIPPING LOCAL STATIONS THIS WEEKEND

Weekend Service Notice for the F Train

Electrical improvements will be made on the F line from 9:45 p.m. on Friday, May 10th, to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th.

Jamaica-bound F trains will run express from Avenue X to Smith-9 Streets, skipping Avenue U, Avenue P, Avenue N, Bay Parkway, Avenue I, Ditmas Avenue, Fort Hamilton Parkway, 15th Street-Prospect Park, and 4th Avenue-9th Street.

Travel alternatives:

• For service to Avenue U, Avenue P, Avenue N, Bay Parkway, Avenue I, or Ditmas Avenue, take the F to Kings Highway, 18th Avenue, or Church Avenue and transfer to a Coney Island-bound F.

• For service from these stations, take the F to 18th Avenue, Kings Highway, or Avenue X and transfer to a Jamaica-bound F.

• For Fort Hamilton Parkway, 15th Street-Prospect Park, and 4th Avenue-9th Street, take the G instead. Transfer between trains at Church Avenue, 7th Avenue, or Smith-9 Streets.

 

LIVE KARAOKE BAND AT BENEFIT FOR M.S. 839

M.S. 839 Spring Silent Auction

The M.S. 839 PTA will hold a spring silent auction fund raiser --open to the public--featuring a live karaoke band, food, and an open bar on Friday, May 10th, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. 

The karaoke band is The Occasionalists, a Brooklyn-based group that often plays at benefits for causes that they believe in. The Occasionalists are John Marshall, Barry Stelboum, John Allgood, and Mark Vincent.

The school is located at 713 Caton Avenue, between E. 7th and E. 8th streets, but the event will be held at Camp Friendship, 339 8th Street (at 6th Avenue) in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Tickets cost $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

CLEAN UP CUITE PARK FOR TWO HOURS

Volunteer Clean-up of Thomas J. Cuite Park

Saturday, May 4th, 10:00 a.m. to noon

Friends of Thomas J. Cuite Park invites neighborhood adults and children to clean up Thomas J. Cuite Park (Froggy Park) and playground tomorrow between 10:00 a.m. and noon.

The park is at 19th Street, between 11th Avenue and Seeley Street.

The flower beds and playground flooring tiles will be weeded and the leaves around the fencing will be raked. The city will provide tools and gloves for your use.

The clean-up will take place if the weather is misting or sprinkling but not in a heavy rain.

 

This is an annual event of "It's My Park," presented by Partnership for Parks, a joint program of NYC Parks and the City Parks Foundation.

OCEAN PARKWAY SHUTTING DOWN FOR HALF MARATHON

Popular® Brooklyn Half Marathon

Saturday, May 18th

For a few hours on Saturday, May 18th, the Popular® Brooklyn Half Marathon will shut down Ocean Parkway and limit parking spaces.

The race will kick off on Eastern Parkway at 7:00 a.m. near the Brooklyn Museum. Participants will run past the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and around Grand Army Plaza, enter Prospect Park, run a loop around the park, exit at the southwest corner onto Ocean Parkway, run down Ocean Parkway, turn right onto Surf Avenue, turn left onto the Coney Island boardwalk, and run about a mile to MCU Park.

A three-hour time limit has been imposed so that roads can reopen to traffic as scheduled. Runners who cannot maintain a pace of 13:45-per-mile can board a sweep bus (starting at mile 7, the exit from the park) or they can run on sidewalks.

On Saturday, from 3:00 a.m. to noon, roads will be closed at the discretion of the NYPD from Park Circle between South Lake Drive and the Ocean Parkway entrance ramp and on Ocean Parkway between the Ocean Parkway entrance ramp and Surf Avenue. 

Parking is not allowed from Friday at 4:00 p.m. to Saturday at noon.

Organized by New York Road Runners, the annual half marathon is the largest in the country, with about 30,000 participants.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION AT PROSPECT FARM (FREE)

 Earth Day Celebration at Prospect Farm

Saturday, April 27th, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Prospect Farm invites the community to join its annual Earth Day party.

Activities for all ages will include spring planting projects, a scavenger hunt, a lesson in composting, music and sing-alongs, a tour of the farm, and crafts, plants, and books for sale.

Although the event is free, donations will be welcomed.

Prospect Farm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions are tax-deductible. 

Since March 2010, Prospect Farm has been a community project development toward producing healthy local food as an alternative to industrial food. Its objective is diversity in food production and membership. It is slowly creating healthy soil through its community composting project and farm without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. 

Prospect Farm is a community association with membership open to all. Members improve and farm the land and sustain ties with local residents, businesses, and organizations. It supports the Brooklyn Food Coalition and other initiatives for food sovereignty and food justice.

GREENMARKET AT BARTEL-PRITCHARD SQUARE WILL BE OPEN ON SUNDAYS, STARTING IN MAY

Among the items sold will be fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, chicken, wild-caught fish and shellfish, eggs, herbs, breads, pastries, jams, flowers, and plant starts.

Farmers attending will include

• F & G Family Farm Vegetables from Orange County, N.Y.,
• Grape Hollow Farm Fruits, vegetables, chicken, jams, and flowers from Dutchess County, N.Y.,
• Haywoods Fresh Beef, pork, chicken, and eggs from Columbia County, N.Y.,
• Nolasco’s Farm Vegetables, Mexican specialty produce, and herbs from Warren County, N.J., and
• Williams Fruit Farm Orchard fruit from Ulster County, NY.

Free cooking demonstrations, raffles, and family-friendly activities will be featured throughout the season.

Pay for your purchases with cash, SNAP/EBT, debit cards, credit cards, WIC, Senior FMNP coupons, and Health Bucks. For every $5 that SNAP/EBT users spend, they get a $2 bonus--a Health Buck coupon--to purchase additional fresh fruits and vegetables.

Food scrap and clothing are no longer collected at this greenmarket.
