DOG BEACH IS BACK, AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Dog Beach, at Long Meadow in Prospect Park, has reopened much earlier than expected. Dogs can again use the swimming area during the hours that they are allowed to be off their leashes in the park.

Restoration and reconstruction began in early July; the beach wasn't scheduled to reopen until early 2017. During the project, pavement was replaced with natural stone slabs, chain link fencing was replaced with underwater fencing that separates dogs from wildlife, and invasive plants were replaced with native ones.

Off-leash hours in Prospect Park are every day from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. During those off-leash hours, dogs are also allowed off-leash at the Long Meadow, Nethermead, and the Peninsula.

The Brooklyn Borough President’s office, councilmembers Brad Lander and Stephen Levin, and the Brooklyn Delegation provided funding for the project.

ALTERNATE SIDE RULES FOR NEXT WEEK

Alternate side of the street parking regulations--normally in effect on weekdays and Saturdays so that streets can be cleaned--will be suspended from Monday, September 12th, through Wednesday, September 14th, for Eid al-Adha (Idul-Adha).

Parking meter regulations will not be suspended.

Street cleaning will be suspended.

JAPANESE DRUMMING PERFORMANCE IN THE GARDEN (FREE)

Bang the Drum! Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Ensemble
Sunday, September 11th, 1:00 p.m.

A taiko drum ensemble will give a free performance in the East Fourth Street Community Garden. The ensemble will be comprised of students from the Brooklyn-based Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center, a Japanese drumming studio.

The musicians will be Eriq Robinson, Rachel Daddino, Rassi, and Richie Arbas.

From the KWTC website:

The Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center preserves, teaches, and promotes various styles of taiko (Japanese drumming) and fue (bamboo flutes), shares elements of Japanese music and culture with students and creates a community among taiko players, musicians, and others.

Taiko has roots both as a living folk art and in classical traditions; and the music and associated choreography has evolved to be used in many forms ranging from grassroots community celebrations to sophisticated jazz compositions.

In Japan, there are many local festivals which for generation after generation have featured taiko. These can serve as a profound means for building energy, unifying groups of people, and inspiring individuals to push their own limits in creating something greater for a community.

NEW MOVIE THEATER COMING TO PAVILION SITE

The Pavilion will close at the end of October, to be replaced by a theater called Nitehawk Prospect Park. Nitehawk Cinema will completely renovate the existing building and make it into a seven-screen, 650-seat movie theater with an accompanying restaurant and bar, scheduled to open in the early fall of next year.

The theater is located at 188 Prospect Park West, between 14th and 15th streets.

Nitehawk's other Brooklyn theater is in Williamsburg. It opened in 2011.

The Pavilion's predecessor, The Sanders Theater, opened in 1928 under the ownership of The 15th Street Amusement Company. The Sanders was named for its owners, Harry and Rudolph Sanders. Prior to that, the Marathon Theater, a nickelodeon also owned and operated by Harry and Rudolph Sanders (1908 to 1927), stood on that spot. When the Marathon was torn down, the Sanders was built.

The once-vibrant Sanders laid empty from 1978 to 1996, to the despair of its neighbors. Would it become a co-op? Would it become stores? Neither. It continued to be a theater. In 1996, it became the Pavilion Theater, owned by Norman Adie and John and Phil Castaldi.

Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. acquired the Pavilion from Pritchard Square Cinema in February 2005. They used the nine-screen digital theater as a digital cinema test site and a showcase for its integrated digital cinema technology.

Hidrock Realty bought the theater's property and the property next to it (192 Prospect Park West, formerly Circles restaurant) in 2006, with a plan to build luxury condos. Instead, the site will remain a movie theater, one with "a double kitchen, two bar areas, a restored atrium overlooking the park, and in-theater dining."

Read more about these new plans in an article in The New York Times.

Ditmas Park Helpers' first End-of-Summer Electronics Recycling Campaign was a big success. POLICE OFFICERS PATROLLING WINDSOR TERRACE WILL MEET WITH RESIDENTS

Meeting with Neighborhood Coordination Officers
Saturday, September 17th, 10:30 a.m.

The two Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCO) who patrol Windsor Terrace (Sector A within the 72nd Precinct) will meet for a second time with Windsor Terrace residents.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, September 17th, at 10:30 a.m., in M.S. 88 (Peter Rouget), at 544 7th Avenue, between 18th and 19th streets.

The NCOs serving Windsor Terrace, Police Officers Daniel McGrath and Wilfredo Montes, are interested in hearing about the concerns of Windsor Terrace residents. Concerns might include
  • violent street crime,
  • home burglaries,
  • packages stolen from front porches,
  • street safety (such as advocating for a crossing guard at Caton Avenue and the east side of Ocean Parkway), and
  • whatever else is important to you.

The 72nd Precinct was divided into four sectors several months ago, as part of a new policing model ("community policing"). Before that, the precinct had eight sectors. As a result of the reapportionment, additional officers were assigned to the precinct.

An article in Brooklyn Reporter explains the significance of this new way of policing.

The meeting is open to the public; everyone is welcome and is encouraged to attend.

Phone numbers and e-mail addresses for the two officers:
  • Danny McGrath: (917) 853-2601, daniel.mcgrath @ nypd.org
  • Wilfredo Montes: (917) 912-0960, wilfredo.montes @ nypd.org

DECIDE HOW $1 MILLION OR MORE SHOULD BE SPENT IN YOUR CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT

From our New York City Councilmember, Brad Lander:

It’s that time of the year again: our 6th cycle of Participatory Budgeting NYC (PBNYC) is about to kick off, and we need your help – and your ideas – to make this another fantastic year of grassroots democracy.

Last year over 67,000 people voted citywide, funding $38 million worth of projects in 28 districts around the city.

Here in our district you voted on $1.5 million worth of projects – including translation equipment in 5 public schools, bus countdown-clocks for the B67/B69, new laptop carts for a high school, new “mobile art studios,” and so much more.

If you’ve had a good experience with PBNYC in the past, we hope you’ll continue – and even increase – your involvement this year.

Submit an idea to improve your neighborhood, help out at a neighborhood assembly, or join a delegate committee to see how these projects make it to the ballot, from start to finish. PBNYC only works because people like you step up and make it your own.

You can give your idea to improve your neighborhood, and learn about the many ways that you can get more involved at our upcoming PBNYC assemblies this fall.

Some of our assemblies will feature conversations focused on specific issue areas (per the descriptions below) but there will be room for general discussion at all of them.

Join us for one (or more, if you’re interested) of the following events:

PBNYC Assembly at Carroll Gardens Library
Focus on Arts and Education
Monday, September 19th
6:30 p.m.
396 Clinton St. (near Union St.), Brooklyn, NY

PBNYC Assembly at Park Slope Library
Focus on Streets & Transit, Parks, and the Environment
Thursday, September 22
6:30 p.m.
431 6th Ave. (near 9th St.), Brooklyn, NY

For Kensington and Windsor Terrace:
PBNYC Assembly at PS 230
Wednesday, September 28
6:30 pm
1 Albemarle Rd (btw Dahill Rd. and McDonald Ave), Brooklyn, NY

We’re also collecting ideas online. If you can’t make it to one of our neighborhood assemblies, submit your PBNYC idea here.

Brad
