A MUSICAL FUND RAISER FOR P.S. 139

P.S. 139 Fund Raiser Party

Monday, June 6th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

An evening of live music, friends, drinks, and snacks at Bar Chord will be fun and a fund raiser for P.S. 139. The live music will be provided by Ibex and special guests.

During the event, EzraGuitar will provide free babysitting in its studio on Coney Island Avenue, between Cortelyou and Dorchester roads. Space is limited; to reserve a space, sign up here.

A $25 suggested tax-deductible donation covers the music, appetizers, and a free cocktail or beer, compliments of Bar Chord. The event is sponsored by the P.S. 139 Parents Association, and all of the proceeds will benefit programs and materials for P.S. 139's students.

One door prize will be awarded: a gift certificate to Werkstatt, an Austrian restaurant that opened last year on Coney Island Avenue, between Albemarle and Beverley roads.

TREE PIT GUARDS FOR MCDONALD AVENUE TO PROTECT TREES, PLANTS, AND FLOWERS

 

      Help Us Beautify the Windsor Terrace-Kensington Area

The tree pits in front of the Hamilton Co-Op at 221-243 McDonald Avenue (between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Greenwood Avenue) have long been neglected. They have been areas of compacted dirt and a collection place for litter, broken car parts, and dog feces.

In an effort to beautify this stretch of the neighborhood, the residents of the Hamilton Co-Op have begun to plant flowers and plants in an attempt to reclaim these spaces.

Unfortunately, these flowers and plants are being trampled. To protect these newly-planted areas, the co-op is trying to raise funds to have tree pit guards installed.

The starting cost of a tree pit guard, depending on its size, is $550. The residents have set up a GoFundMe page to raise the funds. Donations go to the New York Tree Trust and are tax-deductible.

The June meeting of the 72nd Precinct Community Council will take place in Windsor Terrace, rather than in its usual meeting place in Sunset Park.

Brooklyn Prospect Charter School's Windsor Terrace Middle and High School at 3002 Fort Hamilton Parkway will be the location. The school (formerly Immaculate Heart of Mary School) is between E. 2nd and E. 3rd streets.

Elections for the Community Council will be held at this meeting. To be eligible to nominate someone and to vote, you must have attended four meetings within twelve months (not including April and May).

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am writing to let you know I will not be seeking re-election to the New York State Assembly after thirty-two years in office.

I am deeply grateful for the support you have shown me during this time and it has been an honor and an inspiration to be in public service. I am proud of all the good things my office and staff have done in collaboration with the thousands of wonderful people I have had the chance to represent. They include:

• Saving ten community organizations, institutions, or major programs from collapse or closure over the years, sometimes more than once;
• Helping thousands of individuals through our offices;
• Leading the successful fight to downzone nearly every neighborhood in the district, to protect the community from predatory developers and preserve the quality of life through low and medium density zoning;
• Designating millions to subway facilities, schools, parks, hospitals, and community service and housing programs;
• Sponsoring forums, workshops, neighborhood resource and service fairs to help people and keep them informed.

In the State legislature, I am proud of what I accomplished:

• I chaired four Committees;
• There are 95 Brennan laws on the books of the State of New York;
• I won three national awards for my legislative work, and,
• I worked full-time with no outside compensation.

My office will remain open through December 31 to provide service, and once again, my deepest thanks for the chance to serve. I remain,

A Silver Alert has been issued for Joseph Pauyo, an 81-year-old black male from East 19th Street and Albemarle Road in Brooklyn. Mr. Pauyo has dementia and diabetes and may be in need of medical attention.

Description: 5'7" tall, 170 pounds, gray hair. He was last seen wearing a light blue shirt, brown pants, and a brown baseball cap. Mr. Pauyo wears a medic alert bracelet and uses a walker.

Last seen leaving the Crown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Haring Street and Avenue U in Brooklyn at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25th.

GAY GREEN-WOOD TROLLEY TOUR 2016

                           Gay Green-Wood Trolley Tour
                      Sunday, June 12th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Celebrate the 20th Brooklyn Pride Week (June 5th through 11th) with an LGBT-themed trolley tour of Green-Wood Cemetery.

Tour guide Phil Desiere--who leads tours of Greenwich Village, Central Park, and other New York City sights--will illuminate stories of Green-Wood's "permanent residents" who were openly gay, including "It’s Raining Men" co-author Paul Jabara, and others who were probably gay or bisexual, like Violet Oakley, a member of a "Boston marriage."

You'll also visit the final resting places of those who contributed to LGBT culture in fun, surprising ways, including Louis Comfort Tiffany, the artist and businessman whose fancy New York City atelier is the namesake of gay novelist Truman Capote’s smash hit, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. 

Thanks to the New York City LGBT Historic Sites Project, LGBT graves in Green-Wood will be marked with a rainbow flag for the entire month of June.

F EXPRESS: MTA WANTS FEEDBACK ABOUT EXPRESS SERVICE BETWEEN CHURCH AVENUE AND JAY STREET

Morning and evening rush hours might see half of the current F trains running express in both directions between Church Avenue and Jay Street-Metrotech, starting in fall 2017. 

The F express would stop at the 7th Avenue station, but it would skip the Fort Hamilton Parkway, 15th Street-Prospect Park, 4th Avenue-9th Street, Smith Street-9th Street, Carroll Street, and Bergen Street stations. Those stations would still be serviced by the F local.

The MTA has completed a feasibility study and analysis of establishing an F express service in Brooklyn. Its 37-page report, "Feasibility and Analysis of F Express Service in Brooklyn," includes the results of its study as well as its recommendations.

The report preliminarily recommends that an F express service should be implemented after the end of the Culver station project in early fall 2017, based on what the MTA has determined is a net savings in passenger travel time. 

The agency is now looking for feedback about it from the public.

The MTA study was conducted at the request of F train riders and elected officials in Brooklyn who use the line to commute into Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan. But Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, New York City councilmembers Brad Lander and Stephen Levin, and several New York State Senators have already spoken out against the proposal. The study analyzes a two-way peak period express service between Church Avenue and Jay Street-MetroTech, with half of the F trains operating express during rush hours and half of the F trains--along with the G trains--operating local.

Due to ridership demand falling within New York City Transit's loading guidelines and rolling stock and track capacity constraints, no additional overall F service would be added, meaning that should an express be implemented, local stations between Church Avenue and Jay Street-MetroTech would have 50% less peak F service. 

Among the key findings of the study are the following:

• Express riders during the morning peak hour would save on average 3.4 minutes. Local riders would lose on average 1.3 minutes. The net travel time benefit would be 27,000 minutes. The maximum northbound travel time savings would be 7.3 minutes. However, more riders would experience longer travel times as ridership is heavier between Church Avenue and Jay Street-MetroTech.
• An express service could lead to some operational improvements, as southbound F express trains would no longer be delayed by terminating G trains discharging at Church Avenue and by G trains originating at Church Avenue.
• F express trains would be slightly more crowded than current F trains, although still within NYC Transit's loading guidelines, while the F locals would be less crowded. There would also be increased stair crowding at a couple of local stations due to larger evening exit surges per train.

So, F local riders would experience longer wait times for less crowded trains, and riders with access to F express service would see reduced travel times for more crowded trains.
