Free Mammograms and Breast Exams

Thursday, November 17th

9:00 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Get a mammogram if you do have a lump or any other sign of breast cancer. Get a mammogram if you don't have a lump or any other sign of breast cancer.

On Thursday, November 17th, Assemblymember Jim Brennan is co-sponsoring free breast cancer screenings in cooperation with the American Italian Cancer Foundation in its Mobile Care Clinic. The foundation has been offering free mammograms since 1987.

A free digital mammogram--an x-ray of the breast--and a clinical breast exam will be provided to women aged forty or older who live in New York City and who haven't had a mammogram in the past twelve months.

No co-pays are required; deductibles are waived.

Medical services will be provided by Multi-Diagnostic Services. 

The screenings will be done at Assemblymember Brennan's district offices:

• 416 7th Avenue, between 14th and 13th streets, from 9:00 a.m. to noon,
• 1414 Cortelyou Road, between Rugby and Marlborough roads (map), just a few blocks east of Coney Island Avenue, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

COMMUNITY MEETING OF ALBEMARLE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

The Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) will hold its first community meeting of the season on Thursday, September 22nd, at the Flatbush and Shaare Torah Jewish Center, 327 E. 5th Street (corner of Church Ave.). The meeting will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m.

The guest speaker for the meeting will be James F. Brennan, our New York State Assemblymember. He will discuss issues of interest and importance to our neighborhood. Assemblymember Brennan, after thirty-two years of service in the Assembly, did not run for re-election this year. We thank him for serving us, and we wish him well.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams has also been invited to attend this meeting.

ANA's next fall meetings are scheduled for Thursday, October 20th, and Thursday, November 17th, both from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

As always, Foodtown and the ANA will provide refreshments for the meeting.

All residents are cordially invited. The meeting is free and open to all, members and non-members.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am writing to let you know I will not be seeking re-election to the New York State Assembly after thirty-two years in office.

I am deeply grateful for the support you have shown me during this time and it has been an honor and an inspiration to be in public service. I am proud of all the good things my office and staff have done in collaboration with the thousands of wonderful people I have had the chance to represent. They include:

• Saving ten community organizations, institutions, or major programs from collapse or closure over the years, sometimes more than once;
• Helping thousands of individuals through our offices;
• Leading the successful fight to downzone nearly every neighborhood in the district, to protect the community from predatory developers and preserve the quality of life through low and medium density zoning;
• Designating millions to subway facilities, schools, parks, hospitals, and community service and housing programs;
• Sponsoring forums, workshops, neighborhood resource and service fairs to help people and keep them informed.

In the State legislature, I am proud of what I accomplished:

• I chaired four Committees;
• There are 95 Brennan laws on the books of the State of New York;
• I won three national awards for my legislative work, and,
• I worked full-time with no outside compensation.

My office will remain open through December 31 to provide service, and once again, my deepest thanks for the chance to serve. I remain,

COUNSELING ON THE RIGHTS OF TENANTS AND HOMEOWNERS (FREE)

Two free housing clinics are scheduled for this month, one to assist tenants and the other to assist homeowners (owners of private homes as well as cooperatives).

Assemblymember Jim Brennan is partnering with Housing and Family Services of Greater New York, formerly Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, to co-sponsor the clinics. Housing and Family Services has more than forty years of experience in our community.

MAMMOGRAMS AT NO COST: DETECT BREAST CANCER EARLY

No-cost Mammograms

Wednesday, September 30th

9:00 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. If you have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer, get a mammogram. If you have a lump or any other sign of breast cancer, get a mammogram.

Mammograms will be provided at no cost to you on Wednesday, September 30th, at Assemblymember Jim Brennan's district offices. He is co-sponsoring the screenings with the American Italian Cancer Foundation in its Mobile Care Clinic. The foundation has been offering screenings for breast cancer for the past thirty-five years.

The screenings will be done at 416 7th Avenue, between 14th and 13th streets, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and at 1414 Cortelyou Road, between Rugby and Marlborough roads, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

LONGER PEDESTRIAN HEAD START AT CHURCH AND OP

The day after Ngozi Agbim was run over and killed, Assemblymember Jim Brennan sent a letter on the urgent subject of pedestrian safety to the New York City Department of Transportation. An eighteen-wheel truck had struck Ms. Agbim as she was walking in the northeast crosswalk at Church Avenue where it crosses Ocean Parkway.

In the DOT's response, according to a press release from Assemblymember Brennan, DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan agreed to increase the existing leading pedestrian interval from eight seconds to ten seconds. That gives pedestrians a ten-second head start in working their way across Ocean Parkway before cars and trucks in front of them and behind them get a green light.

The DOT letter says the agency's Traffic and Planning Division is working on this "critical safety concern" with the New York State DOT

"to identify safety improvements that are feasible at this intersection. In the meantime, we will modify the signal timing by extending the existing leading pedestrian interval...across Ocean Parkway."

Assemblymember Brennan then suggested to the DOT the possibility of closing the north (highway) side of the intersection "while other options are being evaluated."
