Pesticide Spraying

Thursday, September 3rd, 8:30 p.m. to Friday, September 4th, 6:00 a.m.

To reduce mosquito activity and the danger of West Nile virus, pesticide will be ground-sprayed from trucks between 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 3rd, and 6:00 a.m. on Friday, weather permitting.

In case of rain, high winds, or equipment malfunction, spraying may be delayed.

The neighborhoods to be sprayed include parts of Borough Park, Gowanus, Greenwood Heights, Kensington, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and Windsor Terrace.

 

These Zip Codes will be affected: parts of 11204, 11215, 11217, 11218, 11219, 11225, 11232, and 11238.

 

Bordered by 4th Avenue to the west; Atlantic Avenue to the north; Classon Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue to the east; and Parkside Avenue, Ocean Parkway, Fort Hamilton Parkway, Dahill Road, 45th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and 39th Street to the south. 

 

"West Nile virus can infect humans, birds, horses and other mammals. People who are older than 60 have the highest risk of becoming severely ill. There is increasing evidence that people with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk."

 

Stay indoors during spraying, and keep your pets indoors too. The spray will use a very low rate of Anvil® or DeltaGard®, containing the active ingredients sumithrin (Anvil) or deltamethrin (DeltaGard) for adult mosquito control.

72ND PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL WILL RETURN TO WINDSOR TERRACE

 

72nd Precinct Community Council Meeting

Tuesday, September 8th, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

 

The 72nd Precinct Community Council will meet on Tuesday, September 8th, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Brooklyn Prospect Elementary School. People who live in or work in Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, South Slope, and Sunset Park are invited to attend.

 

The Commanding Officer, Captain Ernesto Castro, who was appointed to the 72nd Precinct earlier this year, will be at the meeting, along with the Neighborhood Coordination Officers. Join the discussion about the types of crime that have been taking place, their frequency, why they happen, and what the police and the public can do to help prevent them.

Newly-assigned Community Affairs Officer Susan Alexander will also attend the meeting. She replaces Officer Sean Spencer, who was on the job for six years. The phone number for Community Affairs is (718) 965-6326.

Meetings of the 72nd Precinct Community Council typically take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Community Council hasn't met in person in Windsor Terrace since November 2019. At the regularly-scheduled monthly meeting, residents--particularly those living in the southwestern portion of Windsor Terrace (north of Caton Avenue and west of Ocean Parkway)--reported their concerns about a variety of issues, including group assaults, groups of people armed with guns and/or knives, home and car break-ins, and package theft.

 

As a result of the complaints, a special follow-up meeting was held two weeks later, and some of the issues were addressed.

THE CRAFT SALON'S AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES THIS FALL WILL BE OUTDOORS

 

The multi-faceted, multi-talented artist Dari Litchman will offer after-school crafts classes for kids outdoors in Kensington this fall.

Crafting will include two weeks of sewing, two weeks of fibers, two weeks of clay, and two weeks of paper.

The Craft Salon will operate from Monday, September 7th, through Friday, October 30th, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The fee is $480 for eight weeks for one class. All of the supplies for one class are included in the fee.

Classes are for kids ages eight and up of all genders, with four kids in each class.

Each child will be able to make up one missed class.

The setting is on Ocean Parkway, between Church Avenue and Beverley Road. A canopy will be used for sun and/or drizzle.

Wearing a mask is mandatory.

An indoor bathroom that can be used safely will be available.

Parents or other caregivers will bring the kids to the class and pick them up at the end of the class.

Save the Post Office: A Day of Action

Join Occupy Kensington and the national movement to Save the Post Office on Tuesday, August 25th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Kensington Post Office.

This is a Day of Action to make three immediate demands to save our public postal service:

• Provide at least $25 billion in emergency COVID funding for the postal service.
• Stop the mail slowdown policies introduced by Postmaster General DeJoy and permanently reverse the delays.
• Ensure public confidence in voting-by-mail by providing all necessary resources for the timely delivery of election mail.

• We need $25B for the post office in emergency relief.
• Stop post office cutbacks.

Wear a mask and bring hand sanitizer. Keep your mask on, maintain social distance, and sanitize your hands, as needed, to protect each other.

 

US Mail Not for Sale is a worker-led campaign that brings together labor unions, elected officials, member organizations of A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service, community supporters, and the public to fight plans to sell the public Postal Service to the highest bidder.

RALLY TO SAVE THE USPS

Rally to Save the Postal Service

The United States Postal Service is constitutionally mandated to serve all Americans, whoever we are and wherever we live. The postal system serves us in useful and critical ways that no other public or private organization has duplicated: it picks up and delivers local, national, and international correspondence, bills, checks, prescription medications, food, clothing, greeting cards, magazines, books--and absentee and other mail-in ballots.

 

The post office was created as a nonpartisan agency. Funding it adequately, allowing postal employees to work overtime rather than leaving mail and packages sitting in the station at the end of the day, and not removing sorting machines are all essential to the functioning of our nation and its institutions, especially during a pandemic that is keeping millions of Americans socially distanced and away from enclosed spaces, including polling sites.

 

President Trump and Postmaster General DeJoy should be supporting the health and well-being of our postal system. Public protest, an American tradition and a mainstay of our treasured democracy, persuaded the Postmaster General to walk back some of his harmful edicts, but he said they're only temporarily suspended, not reversed. Demand DeJoy's removal from his position. We deserve a better Postmaster General, one who believes in the agency that's in his or her care and will help it thrive.

Join a grassroots, neighbor-led, peaceful, non-violent, socially distanced, masked rally in support of our postal system on Saturday, August 22nd, at 11:00 a.m. local time. OCEAN PARKWAY COMMUNITY LITTER CLEANUP SCHEDULED

 

Update: On Saturday morning, if it's raining at 8:00 or 8:30, the community cleanup will be rescheduled for Sunday, August 30th, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Ocean Parkway Cleanup

Saturday, August 29th, 9:00 a.m. to noon

Neighborhood residents who don't like the unsightly, unhealthy litter on their streets will continue working together to remove it from the Ocean Parkway service road and pedestrian mall on the east side of Ocean Parkway later this month.

Meet up with the Ocean Parkway Cleanup Crew and The Kensington Stewards on the east side of Ocean Parkway (the side near E. 7th Street) at the intersection of Church Avenue. From there, everyone will work their way south to Avenue C.

The Sanitation Department and the Parks Department will loan some cleanup supplies (grabbers, brooms, etc.), but bring your own cleanup tools, if you have any. The Sanitation Department will pick up the filled trash bags shortly afterward.

This cleanup event will take place on Saturday, August 29th. Drop in to help for however long you can between 9:00 a.m. and noon.

In addition to this and the two previous organized group efforts, people have been picking up litter on their own or with a friend or two. All efforts are appreciated!

Wear a face mask to protect each other from COVID-19, and wear gloves to protect your hands from any litter you might handle.

Invite adults and children from the neighborhood to join in on this ongoing community project.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED THIS SATURDAY

Alternate side parking regulations for street cleaning will be suspended for Feast of the Assumption on Saturday, August 15th.

Through Labor Day, when alternate side parking is in effect, residential side streets that have multiple alternate side parking days will only be cleaned--with vehicles required to be moved--on the latest day in the week on each side.

LIBRARY PARTIALLY REOPENS MORE BRANCHES TODAY

Ten more Brooklyn Public Library branches reopened for grab-and-go lobby service today, joining the seven that reopened on July 13th. The seventeen libraries now offering lobby service are

Hours of operation are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays and from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Patrons can pick up items in the lobby that they've placed on hold. Return bins are available in the lobby.

Browsing, in-person reference, and computer use aren't available, but online services for programming, e-books, research databases, and classes are. 

Any material you check out won't gather fines. Neither will items checked out before the closures began.
 

COMMUNITY GARDEN ON E. 4TH STREET IS OPEN AND IS ACCEPTING SOME FOOD SCRAPS

The East Fourth Street Community Garden has reopened to the public on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. 

COVID-19 precautions: Masks and gloves must be worn when handling the compost cans. No more than ten people will be allowed in the garden at a time. Stay six feet away from other people.

Only certain types of food scraps can be dropped off during the garden's open hours. The scraps are used in its composting program.

Before going to the garden, chop your food scraps into chunks that are smaller than your hand. 

Carrying your food scraps to the garden in a reusable and rinsable container means that you won't have a plastic bag that you'll need to get rid of.

At the garden, deposit your food scraps in the metal cans in the back compost area. Cover the food scraps with browns from the "browns bins" next to the metal cans.

GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY TEMPORARILY CLOSED BECAUSE OF STORM DAMAGE

NO WEEKEND F TRAINS FROM CHURCH AVE. TO CONEY ISLAND

On the F subway line, work on the signal modernization project continues to take place every weekend, weather permitting, through December 21, 2020, with the exception of the weekends of October 9th-12th, 16th-19th, and 23rd-26th and the weekend of November 27th-30th (Thanksgiving).

Work will resume on January 8, 2021, and continue every weekend through August 2021, with the exception of Passover, Easter, and the July 4th weekends.

F trains run between 179th Street and Church Avenue. They do not run between Church Avenue and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

Customers traveling between Church Avenue and Coney Island can use D, N, and Q trains and local buses to complete their trip. Free shuttle buses are not available. 

Work begins on Fridays at 9:45 p.m. and ends at 1:00 a.m. Then, from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., the subway system is closed to clean and disinfect the trains and the stations. Stations reopen on Mondays at 5:00 a.m.

PROTECTED BIKE LANE PROPOSED FOR FORT HAMILTON PARKWAY

Fort Hamilton Parkway Bike Lane

Monday, August 3rd, 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

The Department of Transportation will make a presentation online about the proposed protected bike lane for the Windsor Terrace portion of Fort Hamilton Parkway.

The DOT will meet online with Community Board 7's Transportation Committee meeting on Monday, August 3rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. 

Originally scheduled for March, the meeting was postponed because of the pandemic. The DOT proposes to make improvements on Fort Hamilton Parkway, between Dahill Road and Park Circle, for safer, more direct bicycle routes connecting Prospect Park to Windsor Terrace and Kensington.

Misinterpretation of last May's DOT presentation to the committee led to the spread of misinformation that alleged that twenty-five parking spaces would be lost. The net loss will be one space.
