SPRAYING FOR WEST NILE VIRUS PLANNED FOR NEXT WEEK

The synthetic pesticide Anvil 10+10 (Sumithrin), used to kill mosquitoes, will be sprayed next week in parts of Kensington, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Lefferts Garden, Prospect Park South, Greenwood Heights, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Sunset Park, and Crown Heights (zip codes 11215, 11217, 11218, 11219, 11220, 11225, 11226, 11232, and 11238).

These neighborhoods are being treated because they're experiencing rising West Nile virus activity and have high mosquito populations.

Spraying will begin at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9th, and finish at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th. If the weather isn't conducive to spraying during those hours, it'll begin at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 10th, and conclude at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11th.

The specific area that will be sprayed is bounded by

  • Atlantic Ave., Carlton Ave., Flatbush Ave., Prospect Park West, 15th St., and 5th Ave. to the north,
  • 5th Ave. and 52nd St. to the west,
  • Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Ave. to the south, and
  • Flatbush Ave. and Franklin Ave. to the east.

A liquid insecticide will be sprayed from trucks to kill adult mosquitoes. Watch a truck spraying pesticide in 2012 at http://nospray.org/2015/09/07/watch-how-nyc-sprays-neighborhoods-by-truck-pesticides-you-wont-believe-it.

Before spraying begins and while it's being done, take precautions to minimize your direct exposure. Also, reduce your exposure to mosquitoes, the carriers of West Nile Virus.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) explains that
West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause viral encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or viral meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

West Nile virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected by biting a bird that carries the virus. You or your child cannot get West Nile virus from a person who has the disease.

West Nile virus is not spread by person-to-person contact such as touching, kissing, or caring for someone who is infected.

New Yorkers can take steps to protect themselves during West Nile virus season by reducing the presence of mosquitoes in their surroundings, and safely using insect repellent.
DOH has published the 41-page "Comprehensive Mosquito Surveillance and Control Plan 2015" and posted it here.

For more information about West Nile virus, contact the New York City Citizen Service Center, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 311. Or check the DOH website at www.nyc.gov/health/wnv.

NEW BLOG FOR KIDS' ACTIVITIES IN KENSINGTON AND WINDSOR TERRACE

 Kira and son
We have a special new blog in our neighborhood, "KWT Neighborhood Activities for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers." Kira Onodera-Harrow has created an activities guide/calendar that focuses on the many free or low-cost (under $20) activities for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers in Kensington and Windsor Terrace. It covers ages 0 to 5.

If you're looking at the blog on your phone, click "view web version" to see the calendar. (Thanks for the tip, Aaron Harrow.)

As Kira explains,

"The idea is pretty simple. I started getting tired of checking 7 different websites to see what was happening at Lark or the library or in the park. So I thought that other moms were probably doing the same thing with 13 different tabs open on the computer, wondering 'What should we do today??'

"I'm hoping I have time to update it weekly--checking the other sites' calendars, writing a little something, posting a cute pic (I have a 10-month-old son), and making people feel like the day is full of possibilities.

"Being a stay-at-home mom can be isolating; I'm trying to add to the feeling of community by sharing in this way. The blog is brand-new, so who knows what it will become? For now, I just hope it can be a useful tool."

If you know of an upcoming event to list on the calendar, tell Kira about it at brooklynmamahelper @ gmail.com. The blog is a labor of love, one neighbor's contribution to the community, so everything on it is posted free of charge.

Thanks for undertaking this, Kira. Good luck!

KWT Neighborhood Activities for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers is at http://kwtbabiesandtots.blogspot.com.

TOXINS IN PROSPECT PARK LAKE AND ON DOG BEACH

The widespread presence of high toxins in Prospect Park Lake from blue-green algae (BGA) blooms has been confirmed. These toxins can be harmful to people and to animals. Stay out of the lake, and keep children and pets out of it and away from it. Keep dogs away from Dog Beach too.

If people or animals are exposed to a bloom, wash the skin with soap and water or rinse thoroughly with clean water.

When the blooms are widespread, as they are in Prospect Park Lake, they can affect either the entire lake, a large portion of the lake, or most to all of the shoreline.

Blue-green algae is cyanobacteria. A BGA bloom can make water look like pea soup or like green, blue, or red paint. Or, mats of blue or green pond scum can be floating on the water surface or might have accumulated along the shoreline.

Photos of toxic blue-green algae blooms are posted on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) here.

The possible effects of the toxins on living creatures are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin or throat irritation, allergic reactions, or breathing difficulties. The toxins can also affect the liver and nervous systems if a lot of water is swallowed.

Read more about this on the DEC's website.

If you believe you have been exposed to a bloom and are experiencing symptoms, get medical help immediately and contact the New York City Department of Health.

Many of the homeless animals in shelters and rescue groups in New York have had a tough journey and the Alliance is committed to giving them a chance to find a safe and happy home. We are thrilled to bring Adoptapalooza to Brooklyn for the first time.  We know that Brooklynites will open their hearts and homes to these wonderful pets.

“The Alliance is also grateful to our generous premiere sponsor, the Petfinder Foundation, and to PetFirst Pet Insurance, Purina One and Just Right by Purina, whose support was critical in bringing Adoptapalooza to Brooklyn,” Hoffman added.

“Just Right by Purina is thrilled to be a part of Adoptapalooza and we are excited to help hundreds of people find the pet that is right for them,” said Julia Pitlyk, Just Right marketing associate. “Equally as important as finding the right pet for you is finding the food that is right for your pet.
