January 12th.

Tom Bauer, Director of Operations at the Ocean Parkway Community
Development Corporation began our meeting with a discussion of the
various services his organization provides for our community.
Formed as a
neighborhood preservation entity, the organization assists in such
activities as forming merchant associations, access programs for
building and home repair and counseling people in obtaining mortgage and
rent assistance.
Tom alerted us to the upcoming end of eviction
moratorium that could place many of our residents in jeopardy.
A question was asked about an abandoned building on Ocean Parkway and
Ave. C. (335 Ocean Parkway). Tom looked into the ACRIS database and
advised us that a mortgage was paid off and that the real estate tax
payments were current. There is a disclosure of the current owner and we
(ANA) will try to contact him and inquire as to efforts to repair the
property.
(Community Officer Smiarowski, at the last minute was not able to attend and will attend the next meeting to be held in March).
The meeting was opened up to questions and comments about issues in the community.
Theft from mailboxes is still a problem. It is a citywide problem. A
specific building was mentioned where a tenant was caught on camera and a
police report was filed with the 66th precinct.
Concerns about the Self Help office at 419 Church Ave. were again
raised. The grocery store next door continues to store boxes in front of
the storefront. The owner has been approached by Larry and if the
problem continues the Sanitation department will be notified and the
grocery store owner could be issued a fine.
We also will contact Self
Help to ask if they will return to open their office and provide
services. (Follow up – SelfHelp was contacted and they confirmed that
they are not coming back. Their new location is 626 Sheepshead Bay Road
(718 646 7500).)
A question on reviving the composting program was raised. It was
mentioned that one problem is the attraction of rodents to the compost
bins. It was mentioned that the East 4th st. garden is currently closed
for the winter and is not accepting compost donations.
Another
participant mentioned that there is a compost dropoff on Albemarle and
McDonald that takes place on Saturday during the day.
A suggestion was
made that as the weather gets nicer, a petition campaign be started to
request that the Sanitation department revive the compost program in the
neighborhood.
The ongoing issue of graffiti was again discussed. Councilwoman Shahana
Hanif was instrumental in arranging for ACE to paint over the graffiti
on the Rite Aid building. Graffiti has become a city wide problem and we
need a greater effort in catching the perpetrators to try to stop it.
The issue of the use of motor bikes on sidewalks and bike paths was
again raised. We all agree that we need better enforcement to encourage
motorbikes to use the streets and not the sidewalks.

Update, January 17th: Today, the H+H van is on E. 3rd Street, between Church Avenue and Beverley Road, alongside Korner Pizza. A food truck is parked in the space by 118 Beverley Road that the van has been using.
A new mobile New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (NYC H + H)
COVID-19 testing site will be set up in a van in Kensington in front of the Greater Noakhali Society at 118 Beverley Road,
between McDonald Avenue and E. 2nd Street, near Kensington Plaza (map), thanks to Councilmember Shahana Hanif, the newly-elected New York
City Councilmember for District 39.
The site will be
open from Monday, January 10th, through Sunday, January 16th, from 8:00
a.m. to 7:00 p.m. PCR and rapid antigen tests will both be available for people four years old and above.
Testing at NYC H+H) sites is walk-in only; no appointment is needed.
Councilmember Hanif reports that this NYC H+H site has
the potential to become permanent. Whether or not it will return and be made permanent depends on how many people get tested there this week.
In her announcement, Councilmember Hanif says
"Big
thank you to Laura Atlas for working with me to secure a site! And deep
gratitude to brother Zahid Mintu from the Noakhali Society (where the
van will be stationed) for his cooperation in our efforts to increase
PUBLIC testing in the neighborhood!"
This NYC H+H Beverley Road site is in addition to the NYC
H+H Fort Hamilton Test Center at 4002 Fort Hamilton
Parkway, between 40th and 41st streets (map). That one is open seven days a
week from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Rapid Molecular Testing is available
there.
All patients at NYC H+H sites are tested on a first-come,
first-served basis. But, for your convenience, they do offer you the
ability to pre-register for your visit to some sites, including the Fort Hamilton Test Center.
COVID-19 has caused staff shortages at some branches, affecting their
hours of operation. Some branches have delayed openings, and some are not
open at all. Before visiting a branch, look at the Brooklyn Public
Library locations map at https://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations to find out the branch's current hours and status.
All Brooklyn Public Library locations will close for New Year's weekend at 5:00 p.m.
on Thursday, December 30th. They'll be closed on Friday, December 31st, Saturday, January 1st, and Sunday, January 2nd (as usual). They'll reopen on Monday, January 3rd, at their usual Monday opening times.
In addition, COVID-19 has caused staff shortages at some branches. This has affected their hours of operation so that some have delayed openings and some are not open at all. Before you visit a branch, look at the Brooklyn Public Library locations map at https://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations to check its current hours and its status.
All indoor Brooklyn Public Library events are on hold until further notice.
Consistent with the New York State Department of Health’s
recommendations, and in order to maintain a safe environment for
patients, families, and staff, Maimonides Medical Center has updated the
visitation policy.
For INPATIENT locations throughout the Medical Center (except for
support persons in Labor and Delivery, Mother-Baby, and the Children’s
Hospital), prior to entry, ALL visitors are required to show proof of
COVID-19 vaccination status or proof of a negative COVID-19 test
administered within 72 hours prior to their visit. Self-administered
COVID-19 tests or positive antibody tests are not acceptable.
Visitation will also be limited to ONE visitor at bedside.
The vaccine status or proof of a negative test does NOT apply to
those visitors or support persons accompanying patients in the areas
listed above as well as the Emergency Department for Same Day
Procedures, Physician Offices, or other Outpatient locations.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, all visitors are required to wear a
mask over their mouth and nose at all times, and visitors must remain
in the patient’s room the entire time of the visit.
The following general visitation process is in effect:
Up to two visitors, per patient, will be permitted at bedside during visiting hours.
Visiting will be limited to the following hours:
Sunday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.*
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.*
*These hours may be subject to change.
One visitor will be permitted at bedside, with additional visitors
allowed at the discretion and with approval of the patient’s medical
team.
Emergency Department visitation is available 24 hours a day.
Visitors will be provided with, and must wear, appropriate PPE, when directed.
All visitors must consent to symptom and temperature checks, when appropriate.
All visitors will be issued a visitor pass. The pass must be displayed at all times and must be presented if asked for by staff.
