TOUR OF MAUSOLEUMS OF GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY
Green-Wood Cemetery House Tour
Sunday, October 4th, noon to 6:00 p.m.
Walk into historic Green-wood Cemetery's normally off-limits mausoleums tomorrow (Sunday) on a one-day-only self-guided tour of these "houses."
The tour includes the Egyptian Revival tomb of John Taylor Johnston, an early president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Nichols mausoleum, which served as a kind of hostel for Nichols friends and family; the mausoleum of the Deweys, a family of early American settlers; and several more mausoleums.
At each stop, "house" docents will offer a glimpse into the lives of the personalities who now rest in these structures.
Wear sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes and walk the route, or use the Green-Wood trolley for "hop on, hop off" service between each site. A handy map, provided at the main entrance (500 25th Street at 5th Avenue), will show the location of each open house.
Members of Green-Wood Cemetery and Brooklyn Historical Society pay $15 per ticket. The ticket price is $20 for non-members. Purchase tickets online through Eventbrite.

| Winning projects in the last round of Participatory Budgeting |
Participatory Budgeting in Kensington and Windsor Terrace is kicking off!
RSVP for the upcoming PB Assembly at PS 230 on Tuesday October 6th
The
participatory budgeting (PB) process gives New Yorkers the power to
decide how to spend tax dollars in our neighborhoods. If you’re not
familiar with PBNYC, here’s how it works:
- First, you and your neighbors come up with ideas for cool projects that will help our schools, libraries, parks, streets, and other shared spaces.
- Next, we work together to research the feasibility and need for each project, and finalize a list of projects to put on the ballot.
- Finally, we hold a public vote on the ideas, and together decide which of the great ideas will get funded.
First, We Need Your Ideas!
The
first step every year are “neighborhood assemblies” where residents
come together to brainstorm and share ideas for needed projects, and
learn more about how the process works. Join your neighbors for the
following idea generating event:
PB Assembly at PS 230
Tuesday, October 6th
6:30-8:30 p.m.
1 Albemarle Rd (btw Dahill Rd. and McDonald Ave), Brooklyn, NY
** Please note this location is ADA accessible**
We Need Your Help too!
Volunteer energy is essential to the success of participatory budgeting in our community. Volunteers
run the entire PBNYC operation from generating ideas, to developing
projects, and seeing them through their final place on the ballot.
Volunteers help get the word out about the vote, and help make sure we
have plenty of polling places across the district. Even if you’re new to
PB, volunteering can be a great way to connect with your community and
get to know some of your fantastic neighbors through the process. Sign up here to get involved!
This
whole process wouldn’t happen without a team of dedicated volunteers.
If you would like to join the PBNYC team — to do outreach, become a
Budget Delegate or help at voting sites — fill out this form. We need you!
To
learn more about how participatory budgeting works, and how you and
your neighbors can get involved visit Council Member Brad Lander’s

FIRE AT 13TH AVENUE AND 42ND STREET, WITH UPDATES
UPDATE: Gas has been ruled out as the cause of an explosion that led to a four-alarm fire on October 3rd.
The fire started at about 1:00 p.m. at 4206 13th Avenue, a multiple-dwelling, three-story building. The second and third floors of the destroyed building were residential; the ground floor was commercial space.
As of October 7th, fire investigators are looking into the possibility that the second floor resident, Francesca Figueroa, used fuel or an accelerant (a substance or mixture that makes a fire spread faster), such as chemicals from her hair salon, to commit suicide.
They had already determined that gas could not have caused the explosion: Ms. Figueroa was behind on her gas bill, and the apartment that the explosion occurred in had not been fed natural gas since June.
Ligia Puello, who lived on the third floor, was found dead in the stairwell on the day of the explosion. She died of smoke inhalation and flash burns. Her daughter was visiting her son in the Dominican Republic at the time.
Ms. Figueroa was found dead in the rubble on Monday, October 5th. She had been the owner of Franchezka Unisex Salon on 5th Avenue in Park Slope for the past twenty years. Ms. Figueroa's sister had said previously that Ms. Figueroa was cleaning out the apartment at the time of the explosion.
Thirteen people were injured, including ten firefighters and three people who were walking in front of the building when it exploded. The entire front of the building was blown out by the force of the explosion.
Five buildings were damaged. One of them, 4204 13th Avenue, is being torn down. Fifty neighborhood residents have been displaced. They are mostly staying with family and friends; some are using vouchers from the American Red Cross to stay in hotels.
----------------------------------
Emergency personnel are on the scene of a two-alarm fire at 13th Avenue and 42nd Street in Brooklyn. Expect smoke, traffic delays, and the presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises people to avoid smoke exposure from structural fires by keeping windows closed while indoors and reducing outdoor activity where smoke is present.
People who have heart conditions or breathing conditions, such as asthma, may be more sensitive and should seek immediate medical attention if they experience a worsening of their condition, shortness of breath, or chest pains.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SLOW DOWN SPEEDING DRIVERS IN WINDSOR TERRACE
Speed Humps in Windsor Terrace
Tuesday, October 13th, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Speeding has been an ongoing problem on many streets in Windsor Terrace. To increase pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver safety, drivers need to slow down.
Speed humps (NOT bumps) are one of the traffic-calming methods often used to resolve the problem. A "speed hump" isn't a bump. It's a gradual rise in the road, designed to slow vehicles down to between fifteen and twenty miles per hour. The hump is three to four inches high and up to twenty feet long.
Community Board 7's Transportation Committee met in August to consider a request for fifteen additional speed humps for Windsor Terrace, but the committee didn't reach a decision. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 13th. The meeting is open to the public. Residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions to committee members about the proposed speed humps.
When the committee reaches a decision, it will make a recommendation to the full Community Board. If the board votes in favor of the humps, the New York City Department of Transportation will install them.
If approved, the speed humps will be located at
- Vanderbilt Street between Prospect Park Southwest and McDonald Avenue (3),
- Seeley Street between Prospect Park Southwest and McDonald Avenue (3),
- Terrace Place between Prospect Park Southwest and Prospect Avenue(2),
- Windsor Place between 11th Avenue and Terrace Place (2),
- 19th Street between Vanderbilt Avenue and Seeley Street,
- 18th Street between Terrace Place and Seeley Street,
- Sherman Street between 11th Avenue and Terrace Place,
- Prospect Avenue between Seeley Street and Vanderbilt Street, and
- Kermit Place between Caton Place and Caton Avenue.
Sign a petition to Community Board 7 to encourage its members to vote in favor of the speed humps.

LEGO MASTERBUILDER CLASS FOR KIDS
Lego Masterbuilder Class
Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to noon
September 27th through December 20th
This fall, Eleanor Rogers' "Kensintonlegoclass" will run two regular Lego classes: the Sunday "Masterbuilder" class and a Monday after-school class for kindergartners and 1st graders at P.S. 130 as part of the Wingspan Arts program. Classes at Lark Cafe will likely restart in late October.
The Sunday class will meet in Eleanor's apartment on Albemarle Road at E. 5th Street from 10:30 a.m. to noon. She's targeting it for 2nd and 3rd graders--and possibly younger or older students, if the class is a good fit for them. The class will start on September 27th and continue every Sunday through December 20th, with the exception of November 29th (Thanksgiving weekend).
The cost for the full 12 classes is $220. It's also possible to sign up for a smaller number of classes, based on their availability.
The themes will be Pirates, Wizard's Tower, and Outer Space. The class will build large detailed sailing ships, islands, towers, foreboding gateways, bone cages, moonlanders, Mars rovers, alien spaceships, planets, and more.
General description of the classes
One of the joys of Lego is that everyone plays with it differently. In these classes, Eleanor will incorporate what she sees as the three main areas of Lego play: structured building (following preset instructions), free building, and imaginative play.
The classes have a free-flowing structure that allows the kids to lead the direction of the project as it continues. Builds will be kept and developed from week to week. At the end of each theme, the students will take some smaller builds home with them.
Photos from Eleanor's previous classes are on the kensingtonlegoclass blog.
If you have any questions you'd like to ask Eleanor, please e-mail her at eleanorlego @ hotmail.com or call her at (347) 403-3798.

SONNY FOX (YES, FROM WONDERAMA!) WILL SPEAK IN LOCAL SCHOOL
Sonny Fox Hosts "Broadway to Brooklyn"
Saturday, October 24th, 7:30 p.m.
"Wonderama" host Sonny Fox will be visiting P.S. 217 next month to host "Broadway to Brooklyn." Fox, born in Brooklyn in 1925, attended the school in the 1930s. (Coincidentally, P.S. 217 opened the year that Fox was born.)
Fox served as the host of several iconic children's shows on Channel 5 (WNEW-TV) in the 1950s and 1960s:
"Wonderama," an award-winning, four-hour show on Sunday mornings that he hosted from 1959 to 1967, and "Just for Fun," which broadcast for two-and-a-half hours on Saturday mornings from 1959 to 1965.
Fox
will regale listeners with interesting stories and personal
recollections about some of the
great composers and lyricists of the 20th century and the Broadway songs
or film scores they created that are so familiar to many.
Last year, Fox published his book But You Made the Front
Page: Wonderama, War, and a Whole Bunch of Life. The title comes from a comment his mother made in 1977 when she read in the New York Post that her son had been laid off from his job as vice-president of children’s programming at NBC.
"I was staring balefully at the headline when my assistant said, 'Your mother’s on the phone.' I said, 'Ma, I got fired.' She said, 'Yeah, but you made the front page!'"
The fund raiser is for Friends of
P.S. 217, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit that raises money for the school's arts programs. Impressed by the arts programs that the school offers to its
students, Fox volunteered to do a fund raiser to support these
programs.
Tickets to the performance cost $25 each. A limited number of VIP
tickets will be available for $100 each; they include a private reception
with Fox before the show and a signed copy of But You Made
the Front Page. Purchase tickets by using the form at http://fo217.org/events.
