DISCUSS LOCAL ISSUES AND HOW THEY CONNECT TO WIDER POLITICS

Occupy Kensington General Assembly
Monday, June 18th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

351 E. 4th Street, between Church Avenue and Beverley Road

From Occupy Kensington:
The 99% are everywhere! Come join us for a discussion of local issues and how they connect to wider politics.
We're considering which local issues Occupy Kensington can play a role in. We'll be discussing:
  • Golden Farm/Minimum wage: While continuing to support the workers on Church Avenue's Golden Farm who have organized to improve their pay, is there more we can do to address poverty wages in Kensington and in our city?
  • Public space: There is virtually no public space in Kensington. The plaza in front of Walgreens is a big improvement, but we need a park or a community center for people to get together in our neighborhood.
  • Transport: On top of the cuts in bus service that hit Kensington in the last two years, we are now facing the removal of G train service next year.
  • Schools: Citywide, the ongoing education budget cuts and Bloomberg's high stakes testing agenda are having a negative impact on our schools, and Kensington is no exception.
  • Other Kensington issues, including library funding, the post office, rents, and foreclosures.

WEST NILE VIRUS SPRAYING

West Nile Virus Spraying
Tuesday, June 19th, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The Health and Mental Health Committee of Community Board 7 will meet to discuss this year's spraying against West Nile virus. Committee meetings are open to the public.

As of now, spraying hasn't been scheduled for Brooklyn or Manhattan. In The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island, only non-residential areas and marshes were scheduled for treatment (larvicide was to be dropped from helicopters on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week).

"Comprehensive Mosquito Surveillance and Control Plan 2012" from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene explains what West Nile virus is, how it spreads, who's most at risk, its symptoms, how to reduce risk, how to reduce exposure around your home, and more.

Mosquitoes can breed in standing water. Allowing standing water is a violation of Article 151 of the city’s health code. If you see standing water on private or public property during West Nile virus season (June through October), fill out the Standing Water Complaint on the NYC 311 website so the Department of Health can respond.

"TARAS BULBA" IS COMING TO KENSINGTON

Movie: "Taras Bulba"
Wednesday, June 27th, 3:00 p.m. to 5:07 p.m.

Sixteenth-century Ukrainian Cossacks fight against Polish invaders. One of Taras Bulba's sons fights by his side. Bulba sends the other son to Poland to study the enemy. The son encounters the Polish noblewoman he fell in love with in Kiev.

The film is based on the 1842 edition of the 1835 novella by Ukrainian novelist Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, 1809-1852. Gogol revised the work in 1842 at the request of the Russian government, making it favorable toward Russia rather than toward Ukraine. Gogol's original, "uncensored" version was not available to the public again until it was reprinted in 2005.

This Russian-language movie for adults, directed by Vladimir Bortko, was released in 2009. 127 minutes.

The full English-language text of the 1842 edition of Taras Bulba can be read for free on the University of Adelaide, Pennsylvania State University, and Gutenberg websites.

Teams representing nine charities participated in Saturday's  "Cyclone Roller Coaster 1st Annual Charity Coasterthon" at Luna Park at Coney Island. The winning team would be the one that rode the most laps during the allotted ten hours.

The winning charities are Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, Give Kids The World Village, New York Cares, New York Aquarium, Sean Casey Animal Rescue, You Gotta Believe, and Youth Service Opportunities Project. WALKING TOUR OF GRAVESITES OF THE INFAMOUS

Scandals, Scalawags, and Murder Most Foul
Walking Tour
Sunday, June 10th, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

From the Green-wood Cemetery website:
You are invited to visit, with veteran tour guide Ruth Edebohls, some of Green-Wood Cemetery’s most nefarious residents. Green-Wood is the final resting place of many famous and heroic people, but some of its deceased denizens have a more blemished reputation. Murderers and the murdered, a sullied adulteress, a famous courtesan, gangsters, con men and schemers lie next to those of a more virtuous disposition.
You'll also enjoy the visual delights of Green-Wood, its trees and ponds and its sculpture and buildings by the leading artists and architects of their time.

The walk may be hilly and strenuous--wear good walking shoes.

$10 for members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund / $15 for non-members. Reservations strongly recommended; click here to purchase advance tickets online or call 718-210-3080.
Meet inside Green-wood Cemetery's main entrance at 25th Street and 5th Avenue.

WINDOW SMASHING ON BEVERLEY ROAD

Around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, a man took a wrench to several store windows by Kensington Plaza, starting at 2 B Thai (Beverley Road at E. 2nd Street) and breaking a window, then working his way around toward McDonald Avenue to the ground floor dentist’s office (near Denny’s Steak Pub) and breaking its window. He also beat on the window of a parked van with his bare fists.

Bystanders overheard the suspect, who is about 65 years old, saying "Now I can die in peace."

In practically no time, witnesses said, a squad car arrived from the 66th Precinct, followed by another and another. The man was arrested. One of the NYPD officers said the attack had been called in to 911, which sent out the police almost instantly.

Beat cop Officer Peter Talavera was busy making an arrest elsewhere in Kensington when the incident occurred.

The plaza was packed with bystanders, this being its busiest time of day. Among the witnesses were Kensington Plaza Stewardship Committee members Bridget Elder and Mike Rosenbluth, who were picking up trash and cigarette butts from the sidewalk.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Correction to the original post: According to an official spokesperson at the 66th Precinct , Officer Talavera is still working as a beat cop. Moreover, he has not been promoted to detective.

WHAT YOUR BRANCH LIBRARY COULD LOSE FROM A BUDGET CUT

Brooklyn Public Library--the branches and the central library--could get its budget slashed by $27 million in the city's next budget, which goes into effect on July 1st. That's a cut of almost one-third of BPL's current budget.

Some possible effects of the budget cut:
  • decrease in library service hours by 50%, cutting hours from an average of 43 hours per week per branch to approximately 21.5 hours per week,
  • close of 16 neighborhood library branches,
  • layoff of approximately 35% full-time employees, or
  • buy 27% fewer books for patrons to use.
The public might be deprived of the free use of computers, WiFi service, job search assistance, story time activities, technical skill programs, and cultural events.

What would you like your branch library to lose?

An online petition will be sent to the mayor and to your representative on the New York City Council to try to avoid this drastic funding cut. Please click here.

This is how the petition is worded, but you can change it and personalize it, if you want to:
Dear Mayor Bloomberg & Council Member ___________
Restore Library Funding

I am writing to express my strong support for Brooklyn Public Library and to urge you to restore funding to Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) in the Fiscal Year 2013 budget.  As you know, BPL faces a 32% reduction in city funding that may result in the closure of libraries and a drastic reduction in hours of service across the borough.

BPL is a vital community resource that is needed now more than ever for after-school activities, job search assistance and so much more. It provides free access to books, computers and thousands of programs for people of all ages.

I understand the severity of the City's fiscal crisis and the tough decisions you have to make to balance the budget and main core services, but I ask you to please consider the importance of Brooklyn Public Library during this time and how it helps us immensely during the recession. Please help restore funding to keep Brooklyn's libraries open.

KEY FOOD CLOSING; COMMUNITY MEETING WILL BE SCHEDULED

From Lauren Elvers Collins, Chair, Windsor Terrace Alliance:
We wanted to bring everyone up to speed on the Key Food situation (and thanks to Barbara McCarthy and others for spreading the word).

Since word of the June 30th store closing became public, our representatives have been aggressively trying to make sure that the situation is one that is most beneficial for our community. Jeremy Laufer of Community Board 7, Assemblymember Jim Brennan, Borough President Marty Markowitz, and Councilmember Brad Lander have been making efforts, including reaching out to Walgreens' corporate offices and Key Food's owner.

Please note that some Walgreens do sell produce (which was determined by a WT resident) and PS 154 right down the street will soon be opening a Sunday green market.

Assemblymember Brennan is taking steps now to schedule a meeting about the several issues this closing presents to the community and we will pass on the details as soon as the meeting date and time are confirmed.
Best,
Lauren Elvers Collins
Chair, Windsor Terrace Alliance

KEY FOOD CLOSING: STATEMENT BY COUNCILMEMBER BRAD LANDER

Statement by Councilmember Brad Lander on Loss of Windsor Terrace’s only Grocery Store
“This is a sad day for Windsor Terrace. With the sale of Key Food, much of the neighborhood will now be more than a mile away from the nearest grocery store. This will have an especially devastating impact on seniors, but the whole Windsor Terrace neighborhood will be harmed by this sale.

“While they are not a replacement for a full service grocery store, I am glad that Windsor Terrace is getting its third farmers market this year, in the PS 154 yard on Sundays.  This market will be operating in addition to the new youth-run farmers market I brought to the Windsor Terrace Library last summer that operates on Saturdays, and the long-time market that takes place in Bartel Pritchard Square.

“Walgreens has recently expressed interest in expanding grocery options in its stores. I will be communicating with the company to press for this grocery store option for Windsor Terrace.”
Brad Lander serves District 39 on the New York City Council.
