West Nile Virus Spraying
Tuesday, June 19th, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Health and Mental Health Committee of Community Board 7 will meet to discuss this year's spraying against West Nile virus. Committee meetings are open to the public.
As of now, spraying hasn't been scheduled for Brooklyn or Manhattan. In The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island, only non-residential areas and marshes were scheduled for treatment (larvicide was to be dropped from helicopters on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week).
"Comprehensive Mosquito Surveillance and Control Plan 2012" from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene explains what West Nile virus is, how it spreads, who's most at risk, its symptoms, how to reduce risk, how to reduce exposure around your home, and more.
Mosquitoes can breed in standing water. Allowing standing water is a violation of Article 151 of the city’s health code. If you see standing water on private or public property during West Nile virus season (June through October), fill out the Standing Water Complaint on the NYC 311 website so the Department of Health can respond.
