Around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, a man took a wrench to several store windows by Kensington Plaza, starting at 2 B Thai (Beverley Road at E. 2nd Street) and breaking a window, then working his way around toward McDonald Avenue to the ground floor dentist’s office (near Denny’s Steak Pub) and breaking its window. He also beat on the window of a parked van with his bare fists.
Bystanders overheard the suspect, who is about 65 years old, saying "Now I can die in peace."
In practically no time, witnesses said, a squad car arrived from the 66th Precinct, followed by another and another. The man was arrested. One of the NYPD officers said the attack had been called in to 911, which sent out the police almost instantly.
Beat cop Officer Peter Talavera was busy making an arrest elsewhere in Kensington when the incident occurred.
The plaza was packed with bystanders, this being its busiest time of day. Among the witnesses were Kensington Plaza Stewardship Committee members Bridget Elder and Mike Rosenbluth, who were picking up trash and cigarette butts from the sidewalk.
