LIFE-THREATENING WIND CHILLS THIS WEEKEND. BE CAREFUL!

Temperatures continue to drop to dangerously cold levels with life-threatening wind chills through the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory that will be in effect from 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13th, until noon on Sunday, February 14th. The Advisory is for winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour beginning on Saturday and continuing through Sunday evening, with expected wind chills as low as 20 to 25 degrees below zero.

New Yorkers are urged to limit their time outdoors. Prolonged exposure will cause frostbite. The combination of very low wind chills and frigid air temperatures has the potential to result in hypothermia.

Report heat and hot water conditions to property managers and to 311. The wind chills and the temperature can lead to frozen pipes.

Never heat your home with a gas stove or oven, charcoal barbecue grill, or kerosene, propane, generator or oil-burning heaters.

Electric space heaters are the only kind of space heaters legal in New York City. They should turn off automatically if they are tipped over. Keep them far from water and from combustible and flammable objects.

Keep pets safe and protected from the cold weather.

Check in on vulnerable people: friends, relatives and neighbors, including the elderly and people who have disabilities and access and functional needs.

STORY BOOKS COME TO LIFE IN "TWICE UPON A TIME"

"Twice upon a Time"
Saturday, February 6th, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Madeline Solomon of Music Garden Productions will perform her original puppet show/play "Twice Upon a Time" this Saturday at Willow Nest Studio in Windsor Terrace.

"Twice Upon a Time" is the tale of a little girl named Anushka, who struggles to fall asleep one moonlit night. While Anushka's mother becomes increasingly worn out, children will be delighted when they see Anushka's story books come to life and spring to her rescue.

Characters from the children's books "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "Madeline," "Where the Wild Things Are," "Goodnight Moon," and "Goodnight Gorilla" unite to bring this musical play (accordion and cello) to life.

"Twice upon a Time" premiered in London in 2010.

Children will experience an interactive performance in an intimate setting. Following the performance, children and parents will be sharing in a creative arts workshop relating to one of the characters.

The play is suitable for children ages 0 to 7.

Tickets cost $14.71 each. Buy them through Eventbrite.

This is the first of many creative Theatrical Performances hosted by Willow Nest, an early childhood alternative space that is currently enrolling 2- to 5-year-old children in a range of programs.

LIBRARY NEEDS FACEBOOK LIKES FOR A CHILDREN'S LITERARY GARDEN

If enough people click "Like," the Windsor Terrace Library could get funding from BKLYN Incubator to create a Children's Literary Garden.

BKLYN Incubator is going to provide money to a Brooklyn Public Library branch for a new community program. Help the Windsor Terrace Library's program win the money by clicking "Like" and commenting by Wednesday, February 3rd.

A description of the Windsor Terrace Library's program:

"The inspiration for this program comes from literature. We hope to plant a love of reading. From Greek myths to Shakespeare to Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, plants have always played an important role in works of literature.
The goal of the program is to create a children’s literary garden that is filled with flowers and plants mentioned in works of literature. The Children’s Literary Garden is a program that incorporates plant care and reading."

The Windsor Terrace Library will partner with GreenWorks Team for this project.

HEALTH WARNING ABOUT DOLE PACKAGED SALADS

Dole Salad Company has informed Foodtown that it is voluntarily withdrawing from the market all Dole-branded packaged salads, which are sold in the produce department of Foodtown and other supermarkets.

This withdrawal is being performed voluntarily by Dole in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control.

A multistate outbreak of listeriosis has been linked to packaged salads produced at the Springfield, Ohio, Dole processing facility. Listeria can cause a serious, life-threatening illness.

These packaged salads were sold under various brand names: Dole, Fresh Selections, Simple Truth, Marketside, The Little Salad Bar, and President's Choice. The packaged salads can be identified by the letter "A" at the beginning of the manufacturing code found on the package.

Twelve people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from six states since July 5, 2015, including New York. Twelve were hospitalized, and one died as a result of listeriosis.

See more about this withdrawal at http://www.cdc.gov/listeria/outbreaks.

SHELTER CAN NOW ACCEPT MORE DONATED ITEMS

The family shelter across the street from Foodtown can now accept donations of the items that its families need the most. The items should be new or in like-new condition.

To find out which types of items are needed and the times that you can drop them off at the shelter, send an e-mail to Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Catherine and Tracy are neighborhood residents who have been doing a beautiful job of coordinating this and other efforts to lend a helping hand to the people who are currently living in the shelter.

At Christmas, neighborhood residents prepared and served dinner to the families in the shelter. This activity will take place again on Valentine's Day. Write to Tracy and Catherine at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com, and they'll tell you how you can help with this.

People are needed to pop popcorn for the families to enjoy during the weekly movie screenings that will start soon. Write to Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com for more information.

If you or someone you know has a particular skill or talent or ability to share with children and/or adults, contact Tracy and Catherine at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Financial donations are also being accepted. They're tax-deductible. Details about donating are available from Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Help is much appreciated.
