Congestion on residential streets, speeding, and road safety near a local school are the focus of the next meeting of Community Board 7's Transportation Committee.

 

The public is invited to the meeting, which will be held both in person and on Zoom on Wednesday, March 11th, at 6:30 p.m.

2. Sammy’s Law Implementation presented by Families for Safe Streets
3. Community Feedback on current street/traffic status and safety gaps adjacent to 280, MS442, and BUGS schools (area surrounding 19th/20th street and 10th ave)
4. Committee discussion on Greenway Event Plans for Spring 2026 (Hamilton Ave to 29th street) and Third Ave Street Improvement Plan Engagement

The Low Traffic Neighborhoods proposal would put vehicles that take short cuts onto residential streets back onto bigger, wider streets that were built to accommodate more cars (https://www.openplans.org/low-traffic-neighborhoods).

 

Under Sammy's Law: "Speed limit reductions will target select schools, Open Streets, Shared Streets, and other areas, as well as new 'Regional Slow Zones' in each borough. Sammy’s Law gives the City of New York the authority to reduce speed limits to 20 MPH on individual streets, and to 10 MPH on select streets undergoing safety-related redesigns" (https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pr2024/sammys-law-enactment.shtml).

PROPOSED OPENING OF A DISTRICT 75 SCHOOL IN WINDSOR TERRACE

 

Joint Public Hearing on Co-locating

a District 75 School

with Other Schools in Windsor Terrace

Monday, November 3rd, 6:00 p.m.

 

Public Meeting of the

Panel for Educational Policy 

Wednesday, November 19th, 6:00 p.m.   

 

A proposal has been put forward by the New York City Department of Education to open and co-locate in Windsor Terrace an additional site for an existing District 75 school. 

 

The new location would be the eighth co-located site for District 75 School P.S. K053. It would be in the Bishop Ford Educational Complex at 500 19th Street with M.S. 442 Carroll Gardens School for Innovation (15K442, grades 6, 7, 8, SE) in K280 in the 2026-2027 school year.

 

The building also houses Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (15K758, grades, 6, 7, 8) and the District 15 Pre-Kindergarten Center (15K863, pre-K and 3-K).

 

P053K would serve approximately 48 to 96 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who have a classification of autism, intellectual disability, or multiple disabilities on their Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

 

A joint public hearing will be held via teleconference on Monday, November 3rd, at 6:00 p.m., so that community members can share their comments or concerns. To join the teleconference, log in at https://learndoe.org/districtplanning.

 

The proposal will then be voted on at the in-person public meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) at the Prospect Heights Educational Complex at 883 Classon Avenue on Wednesday, November 19th, at 6:00 p.m.

Family Movie Night: The Jungle Book

Saturday, February 6th, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Watch the Walt Disney movie The Jungle Book this Saturday at the P.S. K280 Pre-K Center, located in the former Bishop Ford High School.

The K280 PTA will host Family Movie Night, and local residents and their children are invited to join K280 students and their parents at the viewing.

The Jungle Book is an animated film produced in 1967. It runs for 78 minutes.

The synopsis begins

"The story of 'The Jungle Book' concerns a young man-cub named Mowgli. A panther named Bagheera one day comes across an abandoned boat, in which a small baby is seen. Taking pity on the baby, Bagheera takes it to a small family of wolves, who adopt the boy."

The suggested donation is $2 per ticket. Concessions will be available for purchase.

SESAME STREET'S BOB WILL PERFORM IN CONCERT HERE

Bob of Sesame Street in Concert

Sunday, April 19th, 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Singer and actor Bob McGrath of Sesame Street, singer/songwriter Pete Sinjin of Hootenanny Arts House, and children from Park Slope Performing Arts will perform in Windsor Terrace at a fund raiser for the P.S. K280 PTA.

The money raised will help support the school's music, art, and enrichment programs. P.S. K280 is a District 15 pre-K in its first year.

The concert starts at 2:00, but get there when the doors open at 1:00 for a raffle ($1 tickets) and a bake sale.

The ticket price is $10 for an adult (age 13 or older) and $5 for a child (age 12 or under). All tickets are general admission and can be purchased here. Get 10% off the ticket price if you share the event on social media during checkout.

The concert will take place at P.S. K280 at 500 19th Street. Use the entrance near 10th Avenue. The building also houses Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School and is the former home of Bishop Ford High School.
