MEET THE BEAT COPS IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Meeting with 72nd Precinct Sector A Neighborhood Coordination Officers
Friday, March 24th, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Share your concerns, complaints, questions, and fears with Police Officers Daniel McGrath and Francis Ghanney, the officers whose beat is Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope. They'll be holding their monthly community meeting with residents and business owners in those three neighborhoods next week.

They'll also update the community about crime and the other aspects of their job.

Almost a year ago, the NYPD divided the 72nd Precinct into four sectors as part of a new policing model known as "community policing." Before that, the precinct was comprised of eight sectors. As a result of the reapportionment, additional officers have been assigned to the precinct.

The two officers, known as Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCO), patrol Sector A of the 72nd Precinct, comprised of Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope.

An article in Brooklyn Reporter explains the significance of this new way of policing.

The meeting will be held on Friday, March 24th, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Bishop Ford Educational Complex, 500 19th Street, Windsor Terrace (between Prospect Park West and 10th Avenue).

Contact information for the officers is
  • Police Officer Danny McGrath
    • (917) 853-2601, daniel.mcgrath @ nypd.org

MIDDLE SCHOOL LIKELY TO MOVE TO FORMER BISHOP FORD HIGH SCHOOL

M.S. 442, the Carroll Gardens School for Innovation (CGSI), will probably move into the Bishop Ford Educational Complex in time for the 2017-2018 school year. The schools that currently occupy the former Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School will stay on. The building is at 500 19th Street, between Prospect Park West and 10th Avenue.

The principal of M.S. 442 wrote this letter to the parents of her students.
Dear MS 442 families:

It is with great pleasure to announce that after many months of negotiation, we have received word from the DOE’s Office of Space Planning that MS 442 will be relocated to the Bishop Ford building for the 2017 – 2018 school year.

Bishop Ford is located at 500 19th Street and houses BUGS Charter Middle School as well as the PS 10 PreK program known as K280.

From the initial information received, we are being offered space that is equitable to what we currently have – similar amount of classrooms, use of the gym, cafeteria and auditorium – all in a safe environment.

While the relocation may present logistical challenges for some of our families, MS 442 is going to work together with those families to make sure all of our students are able to get to the new location next year.

Next Steps:

The SLT [School Leadership Team] will meet with the Office of Space Planning (hopefully) next week to have formal presentation of the relocation plan. The SLT will then walk the space being offered at Bishop Ford. The DOE will post the proposed re-location plan for public review sometime this fall and then the Panel for Educational Policy will vote on this at their December meeting. Once the vote passes (which all DOE officials have told us they anticipate will be an easy yes) the relocation will be official.

At this point, this is all the information we have. We will update you after the SLT Meeting with Space Planning to let you know more details.

We are looking at this as good news for the MS 442 community!

Thanks for your support through this process.

EXTENDED REGISTRATION FOR ADDITIONAL PRE-K SEATS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT 15

More from City Councilmember Brad Lander on the additional pre-k classes for school district 15, in addition to yesterday's post:
The lottery for more than 100 new, full-day, pre-k seats at the former Bishop Ford High School (in Windsor Terrace) has been extended through Tuesday, September 2nd, in an effort to accommodate more families.

The opportunity is open to all families with eligible 4-year-olds who live in District 15 (you can see what district you are zoned for here).

You still have to apply in person, at P.S. 10 at 511 7th Avenue (at 17th Street), 9 am - 3 pm weekdays (not including Labor Day).  The seats will be allocated by lottery (rather than "first-come, first-served").
To apply, you need to come with your child, their birth certificate, evidence of vaccination, and two proofs of address.

As we wrote yesterday, we're sorry for the last-minute nature of the opportunity, but excited to see New York City moving steadily toward truly universal pre-k, where all 4-year-olds will have the chance to get started on their educational path.

ADDITIONAL PRE-K SEATS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT 15

From City CouncIlmember Brad Lander:
My office has just learned that the New York City Department of Education will be offering a new pre-k opportunity for families residing within District 15.

Beginning this September, seven additional classes will be offered within leased space at the former Bishop Ford High School located at 500 Nineteenth Street, BK, NY 11215. The program will be supervised by senior Principal Laura Scott from PS 10 whose school was recently named a “Reward” school by the New York State Department of Education.

Space is limited and will be reserved for District 15 families on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.  on Tuesday, August 26th at PS 10 located at 511 7th Avenue, BK, NY 11215. Admission to this district 15 program does not provide admission priority to PS 10. Families must bring their child with them and two proofs of District 15 residence, 2010 birth certificate, and vaccination card.

I know this news comes at a time when many families may be on vacation and others have already made plans for the fall in any case.  DOE has been working as fast as possible to make these additional seats available, and this will be good for the future for our district.  We are sending out this notification as quickly as possible after being made aware of the opportunity!
