I'm originally from New York. I just moved into this neighborhood a few months ago after living in Paris for a few years. Since 2007, I've been working on a hybrid painting/photographic process. I'm also the co-founder of the art initiative Halfslant, which produces collaborative art installations in alternative spaces.
I recently got a studio in Sunset Park and dove back into my photo/painting work. Within a month, I began and completed the Paris Positives Project.
When Steeplechase Coffee Shop invited me to do their first show, I was really excited to show my new work, but I was also worried about the cost of printing and framing. I'm used to doing shows on the cheap, but I wanted to show my prints in the best way possible. I decided to start a Kickstarter Project to raise funds for the framing and printing and to let people pre-order prints.
I was shocked when I reached (and exceeded) my goal in less than a day. I'm using the additional funding to further push this project in new directions--printing on new materials and playing with different ways of displaying the images (outdoors, on objects, or even on clothes?!).
People can see all of the works on my Kickstarter page, learn about my process, and pre-order their prints there (at half-price!) before August 22nd. Afterward, the prints will be available for sale on my new Etsy shop--which will launch next week--and from me directly at the opening at Steeplechase
I love Steeplechase and am a regular there, so I'm really honored to be their first artist. I look forward to seeing the community's response to the work. I'm so grateful to everyone who supported me and made the show possible. I look forward to seeing everyone on the 26th!

If you need to drop off before Thursday, you can bring your food scraps on Tuesday and Wednesday between 4:30 and 8:00 pm to the Ditmas Park CSA on East 19th Street between Dorchester and Ditmas. Our bike trailer will be parked there with buckets for your compost.
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who lives and works in Windsor Terrace. Prior to becoming an SLP, I earned a B.A. in theatre and then attended a 2 year graduate program in Shakespearean theatre. During that time and while I was earning my master's in Speech, I worked as an English as a Second Language teacher to adults. I developed an interest in accent reduction and have worked for 10 years with private clients in this field.
Lately, I have learned of a few people who are interested in accent reduction therapy but who can not afford to attend private sessions. I am considering putting together a group accent reduction course but am not sure if there would be enough people to form the class, so I thought I would post here to get an idea of the number of people who might be interested.
The course would run for 10 weeks. The sessions would be one hour long, one evening per week. I would like the group size to be around 8 people. The cost would be $230 for the 10 weeks. More than 841,000 patrons attended free library programs, earning BPL the number one ranking in program attendance in North America by the American Library Association.
Created in March 2011, the Prospect Park Litter Mob is a small group of volunteers that meets every two weeks to clean up the woods on the eastern edge of Prospect Park, known as the Midwood. This area is the last forest in Brooklyn, where some of the trees predate the creation of the park.
This is a special place. It should be treated with the respect it deserves, both by the authorities who have allowed it to fall into ruin, and by the people who use the woods for sex, without giving a thought to the environment their litter and behaviour degrades.
While we are making progress, I do not see volunteering as a solution to this complex problem:
The city is at fault. It has given up on our parks.
Our tax dollars should be funding the basic clean up of our public spaces. The city should allocate more funds to the stewards of our parks, instead of cutting back. And that money should be better and more effectively spent.
