UKRAINE: HUMANITARIAN AID DRIVE BEING HELD IN KENSINGTON NOW

A cargo and freight company that has been transporting goods exclusively to Eastern European countries since 1995 will be flying urgently-needed humanitarian aid to Ukraine this Saturday, March 5th. The company, MEEST-America, is located in New Jersey, and its parent company, Meest Group, is based in Ukraine.

 

Ukrainian relief organizations are requesting emergency donations of the items listed below for the Ukrainian people. They can be either new or used-but-in-good-condition.

• Non-perishable food (big demand)
• Clothes for women, men, and children
• Footwear for women, men, and children
• Thermal underwear
• Hygiene products for women, babies, etc.
• Blankets
• Bedding
• Disposable tableware
• First aid and first aid kits
• Tents, mattresses, and sleeping bags
• Standalone lamps
• Candles
• Containers to hold liquids (canisters for water, fuel, and lubricants that have a capacity of 10 to 20 liters)
• Protective military gear (helmets, bulletproof vests, tactical backpacks, and dry rations).

 

Bring your donated items to Flatbush Jewish Center, 327 East 5th Street, on the corner of Church Avenue, in Kensington, Brooklyn, by this Thursday, March 3rd, at 5:00 p.m.

DETAILS ANNOUNCED FOR THE BROOKLYN ST. PATRICK'S PARADE

 

Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade

Sunday, March 20th, 12:30 p.m.

 

The theme for the 45th Annual Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade is "The Gathering of Irish Immigrants, Prospect Park."

 

As in previous years, the parade will begin in Windsor Terrace at Bartel-Pritchard Square at Prospect Park West and 15th Street. From there, paraders will march down 15th Street, turn right onto 7th Avenue, turn right onto Garfield Place, turn right onto Prospect Park West, and march back to 15th Street. 

 

The Parade Grand Marshal is Martin Maher, Brooklyn Borough Commissioner for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, who had been tapped for that role for the 2020 parade.

 

The day's festivities will include live music, face painting, Irish dancers, marching bands, antique cars, and more.

 

At noon, marching units will assemble on Prospect Park West, from 15th Street to 9th Street.

 

At 12:30, a "Rededication Ceremony" in remembrance of the Heroes & Victims of 9/11-WTC will be held at Bartel-Pritchard Square at Prospect Park West and 15th Street. The parade will step off from there at 1:00.

 

A pre-parade Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 245 Prospect Park West, between Prospect Avenue and Windsor Place.

 

The Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade is the oldest one in the borough, having been held annually since 1976. If not for the parade being canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this would have been the 47th annual parade.

Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade

The Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade, the oldest St. Patrick's Parade in the borough, has been held annually since 1976--except for 2020 and 2021, the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. And now, it's back.

 

The 45th Annual Brooklyn St. Patrick's Parade will kick off at Bartel-Pritchard Square, located between 15th Street and Prospect Park Southwest in Windsor Terrace, at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 20th.

 

The day's festivities will include live music, face painting, Irish dancers, marching bands, antique cars, and more.

 

Other details haven't been announced yet, such as the parade route, this year's theme, and who will serve as Grand Marshall.

SHAPE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BY JOINING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY BOARD

 

 

Apply now to become a member of Community Board 7 (Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park) or Community Board 12 (Kensington, Borough Park, part of Midwood). The all-volunteer community boards are the link between the city's agencies and a neighborhood's residents, business owners, and other stakeholders.

 

Community boards serve in an advisory capacity. They manage a budget, and they have oversight over health, transportation, housing, the environment, land use and zoning, and other issues. 

 

To become a member of a community board, you have to be a resident of New York City and you have to live, work in, own a business in/have a professional interest in, attend school in, or have some other significant interest in the district that the board serves. 

 

The deadline for applying for membership is Friday, March 4th, at 4:59 p.m. Apply online by filling out the form posted at https://nyccb.wufoo.com/forms/brooklyn-community-board-application-22/. 

 

Board members will be appointed for a two-year term by the recently-elected Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso.
