Operation Gig! provides live music performances outdoors on weekends.

The series, held on the porches of private houses in Ditmas Park, started in July 2020 to offer a venue where musicians could perform during the pandemic. This gives them a source of income and provides a safe space for people to gather to enjoy live music.

Although the performances are free, a suggested $10 donation to the musicians is more than welcome. You can donate either at the performance itself or to the tax-deductible Operation Gig Musician Guarantee Fund on GoFundMe.

PROSPECT PARK YOGA: BROOKLYN'S FIRST OUTDOOR YOGA + MOVEMENT STUDIO IN PROSPECT PARK

From Paige Cara, founder of Prospect Park Yoga:

I am a resident of Windsor Terrace, and recently launched a business that serves folks in Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and surrounding neighborhoods.

Prospect Park Yoga (PPY), a new open-air yoga studio bringing high-quality, professional classes to all corners of Prospect Park. The class schedule is growing as the weather warms. Use the promo code INTRO and your first class is $10.

A little more about Prospect Park Yoga:

After teaching yoga in NYC for over 12-years, three observations led me to launch PPY:
  • We all need more time outside, and New Yorkers need more reasons to inhabit public space.
  • The outdoor yoga classes in Prospect Park don't serve all of the neighborhoods surrounding the park - just the more affluent neighborhoods to the north
  • It is challenging for yoga teachers in NYC to earn a living wage.
PPY classes run multiple times a day, every day of the week, and in locations adjacent to each of the park's main entrances, making classes accessible to folks living on all sides of the park. Taking advantage of public space lowers the PPY's overhead, and a higher percentage of revenue (50-95%) goes directly to teachers.

This week's schedule:

  • Mon 6/3 | 6 PM (Ocean Parkway Entrance)
  • Tue 6/4  | 6 PM (Grand Army Plaza Entrance)
  • Wed 6/5 | 6 PM (15th Street Entrance)
  • Thu 6/6 | 7:30 AM (Ocean Parkway Entrance) and 6:30 PM (Lincoln Road Entrance)
  • Fri 6/7 | 10 AM Pilates (Grand Army Plaza Entrance) and 6:30 PM Qigong (Ocean Parkway Entrance)
  • Sat 6/8 9 AM (Ocean Parkway Entrance), 10:30 AM (15th Street Entrance) and 12:30 PM (Grand Army Plaza Entrance)
  • Sun 6/9 10:30 AM (15th Street Entrance) and 11:30 AM (Lincoln Road Entrance)

Visit our website to book classes and download the PPY app. Hope to see you in the park!

FREE RAIN BARRELS

Rain Barrel Giveaway
Sunday, June 23rd
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

From New York City Councilmember Shahana Hanif:
Rain Barrel Giveaway

When it rains, it pours! Every year, our office hosts a Rain Barrel Giveaway with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to distribute free rain barrels to members of our community.

This year we are hosting the giveaway on June 23rd from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM at 118 Beverley Road, Brooklyn, New York 11218.

Instructions:

  1. Sign up for a rain barrel on the form linked here. After signing up, you will be emailed a confirmation or a waitlist slot for your rain barrel. Rain barrels are first come first serve.

  2. You must come to the giveaway on June 23rd between 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM to collect your rain barrel. We cannot hold rain barrels, and any rain barrels not collected before 12:30 PM will be given out to the waitlist.

  3. You must present your name or confirmation email to receive your rain barrel.

Why should I consider getting a rain barrel?

Rain barrels can connect directly to your property’s gutter or downspout to capture and store the rainwater that falls on your rooftop. DEP rain barrels come with an installation kit and easy instructions to set in place. Rain barrels help conserve water for gardening and cleaning, reduce harmful runoff, and help you save on your water bill.

When you're given the rain barrel, you'll also be given an installation kit and instructions, but if you'd like to read the instructions now for assembling, installing, maintaining, and winterizing it, go to https://rainbarrel.ca/assembly/.

WINDSOR TERRACE POLICE WILL MEET WITH THE PUBLIC IN JUNE

Detective Daniel McGrath
Detective Francis Ghanney

Update: The meeting location has been changed from Holy Name Church to Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th Street (at 5th Avenue).

--------------------------------

72nd Precinct Sector A
 Build the Block Meeting
Thursday, June 27th
6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Share your safety and quality-of-life concerns at the next Build the Block neighborhood safety meeting.

Residents and business owners in Windsor Terrace, South Slope, and Greenwood Heights will meet with the Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) of the 72nd Precinct's Sector A.

Meet on Thursday, June 27th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Green-Wood Cemetery. The Build the Block meeting times, dates, and locations sometimes change, so it's best to verify the meeting information by calling the 72nd Precinct at (718) 965-6311 and speaking to a Neighborhood Coordination Officer.
"These "Build the Block" neighborhood safety meetings are strategy sessions between local police officers and the people they serve. The meetings have two simple goals: identify the public safety challenges of a specific neighborhood and discuss potential solutions."

Detective Daniel McGrath (e-mail: Daniel.McGrath@nypd.org) and Detective Francis Ghanney (e-mail: Francis.Ghanney@nypd.org) are the NCOs for Sector A, the faces of neighborhood policing.
"Neighborhood Policing is "a comprehensive crime-fighting strategy built on improved communication and collaboration between local police officers and community residents. Neighborhood Policing greatly increases connectivity and engagement with the community without diminishing, and, in fact, improving the NYPD's crime-fighting capabilities.

The same officers work in the same neighborhoods on the same shifts, increasing their familiarity with local residents and local problems."
At this Build The Block neighborhood policing and safety meetingthe officers will update residents about neighborhood public safety issues.

They'll answer your questions and listen to your concerns about assaults and robberies on the street, home burglaries, packages stolen from porches and lobbies, street safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and any other issues that are on your mind.

NYPD precincts are divided into sectors as part of the policing model known as "community policing." The same officers work in the same neighborhoods on the same shifts. The radio dispatchers, supervisors, and sector officers work together. Sector officers and sector cars stay within the boundaries of their assigned sectors, except in precinct-wide emergencies.

Find out the dates and locations of upcoming Build the Block meetings by going to https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/find-your-meeting.page and entering your street address. Meetings occasionally get relocated, so check the page shortly before the meeting.
